Hillary Clinton Meets With Sexual Violence Victims in Congo, Says 'My Husband Is Not the Secretary of State' (Video)

Clinton explodes when audience member asks what her husband thinks of a government policy; fights for women rape victims used as ‘weapons of war.’

Hillary Clinton is making headlines today for lashing out at a student in the Democratic Republic of Congo who asked about her husband’s opinion on a policy issue instead of her own. But she’s also getting some attention for a good cause: meeting with rape and sexual violence victims in that war-torn country.

As for the secretary of state’s public outburst, while on a whirlwind seven-nation African tour an audience member apparently hit a nerve when asking what "Mr. Clinton" thought of a World Bank concern about a Chinese loan proffer to the Congolese government.

"Wait — you want me to tell you what my husband thinks?" Clinton asked. "My husband is not the secretary of state, I am … You ask my opinion I will tell you my opinion, I’m not going to be channeling my husband." Watch the video of Clinton’s response below.

ABC News says the translator made a mistake and asked about Bill Clinton, when the student was actually asking what President Obama thought.

But even if it was a matter of something lost in translation, we should give her a break. She’s toiling in Africa for good causes with little attention while her husband Bill gets accolades and then some for securing the release of American journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling from North Korea. She reportedly had to answer a lot of questions on that topic when she arrived in Africa. And we can’t even imagine the toll all that travel takes on a person. It can’t be easy being married to Bill and having a famous last name. But was it a little too defensive?

On another note, Mrs. Clinton is addressing a serious problem in the Congo: sexual violence. She is in the eastern region of Kivu today to meet with rape victims. Aid workers say as many as 400 women are raped every month in Eastern Congo, which has been plagued by ethnic wars and violent militias that have displaced hundreds of thousands of people seeking refuge. Women who attempt simple acts like leaving their home to find food are at risk of violent and humiliating attacks. Rapes also occur when women are sleeping in their refugee camps.

Clinton, a longtime women’s rights advocate, said continuing sexual and gender-based violence in Kivu is "truly one of mankind’s greatest atrocities."

"The entire society needs to be speaking out against this," Clinton said. "It should be a mark of shame that this happens anywhere in any country … We have to speak out against the impunity of those in positions of authority who either commit these crimes or condone them."

She said she will be pushing for help for "those who are being abused and mistreated and particularly the women who are turned into weapons of war through the rape that they experience."

In Goma, Clinton might meet with President Joseph Kabila and UN peacekeepers, and will participate in a roundtable discussion with victims of sexual and gender-based violence in the country. Let’s hope she can make some inroads in a country that desperately needs to take better care of its women.

yep, Dona, you got that right. Lots of screaming but not a lot of sense behind the nonsense.

Deber,

Obama doesn’t care for Nancy one bit. Watch their body language when they sit next to each other at meetings. She doesn’t care for him much either. I don’t think he has faith in her, he just knows that he’s stuck with her as Speaker.

Leigh, interesting observation on your part.   I never considered the body language.   However, now that I think about it, they are both control freaks….Nancy Pelosi probably doesn’t care much for Obama because he doesn’t give her ‘enough’ attention….

Not to worry, Leigh, Obama will never be re-elected and Pelosi will be out soon as well.   Time for a radical changing of the guards to take America back.

Back to what………. the Good Old Boys……….Racist………remove women’s rights…start unjustified wars and kill innocent people..

That America you’re talking about has gotten us into the mess we’re in right now……….Thanks to all the wonderful

Republicans.  Thank you very much I would like to see our Country move forward not backward.

Personally I’d rather sit up on a High Mountain and breath the fresh air instead of down in the s—t hole George Bush and his cronies left us in.

I find it hard to understand people who profess to be intelligent being taken in by these lying Republican blowhards.

The only thing I’ve ever seen Republicans be interested in is protecting the RICH………they dupe the uneducated and religious into thinking they want to help them………nothing could be further from the truth………they just want those votes and know that those people can be easily conned.

Amen, MK––you bet she stood her ground. Jeesus, people, she’s dealing with a horrible situation, the statistics alone would be enough to feel fury. A female spokesperson that was interviewed about this claimed that Congo is finally being taken seriously and having Hillary come there was so important, so momentous. Another wise foreign policy move.

It wouldn’t matter how much good Hillary did for women — the sad truth is that there are those on this board who are more than willing to trounce on her — I notice those are the same people who seem to love Sarah Palin, and we know how much good she has done for women (none).  =)

Mk P, you are so right. My sentiments exactly. Hillary, acted appropriately by standing up for her rights, to be recognized and respected.

Right on, Hillary!

I agree with you deber as well. There was no excuse. She is, as I cited, diplomat in chief. Everyone has their breaking point, but to lose her cool over something so petty, doesn’t reflect well on herself or the United States.

Lucinda, no excuse whatsoever.   It’s human nature to always work hard on being something other than what you truly are…putting that best foot forward, playing the role, but the real personality has a way of jumping out at you when you least expect it.   Hillary Clinton fits that category.   There’s a very hard side to her.   We’ve seen it before.   I mean, how many times did President Obama have to apologize to people early after January 21, 2009?   Had to make that call to Nancy Reagan and the Special Olympics.   People can only hide their true personalities for so long.

deber B, You betcha—-her real personality was jumping out in that video.  I too think that she has a hard side to her.  She can be a very strict, hard nose at times.  She looked so tired and pooped.  I’m afraid she may not have the right personality or diplomacy to do her given job.  Her pant suits are still so boring.  She should mix it up a little and wear skirts or dresses.

Margie goforth…Oh please…I guess she could have tapped dance and done the splits too.  The last sentence in your post has to be a joke.  Hillary Clinton has never suffered fools gladly and the mistake by the translator sounded like either an insult or misguided question and in either case, she felt the need to end that discussion in an appropriate manner. The meek should stay at home in their aprons, barefoot and valued!

Victoria: "Hillary Clinton has never suffered fools gladly and the mistake by the translator sounded like either an insult or misguided question and in either case, she felt the need to end that discussion in an appropriate manner."  An appropriate manner?  Don’t know where you learned your manners, but her response was not appropriate.  I could think of many other responses that would have been better and gotten your point across about not suffering fools gladly.  She represents our country and that means she represents me.  I, as many others, didn’t like her response for various reasons.  Get over it.
