Hillary Clinton Meets With Sexual Violence Victims in Congo, Says 'My Husband Is Not the Secretary of State' (Video)

Clinton explodes when audience member asks what her husband thinks of a government policy; fights for women rape victims used as ‘weapons of war.’

Hillary Clinton is making headlines today for lashing out at a student in the Democratic Republic of Congo who asked about her husband’s opinion on a policy issue instead of her own. But she’s also getting some attention for a good cause: meeting with rape and sexual violence victims in that war-torn country.

As for the secretary of state’s public outburst, while on a whirlwind seven-nation African tour an audience member apparently hit a nerve when asking what "Mr. Clinton" thought of a World Bank concern about a Chinese loan proffer to the Congolese government.

"Wait — you want me to tell you what my husband thinks?" Clinton asked. "My husband is not the secretary of state, I am … You ask my opinion I will tell you my opinion, I’m not going to be channeling my husband." Watch the video of Clinton’s response below.

ABC News says the translator made a mistake and asked about Bill Clinton, when the student was actually asking what President Obama thought.

But even if it was a matter of something lost in translation, we should give her a break. She’s toiling in Africa for good causes with little attention while her husband Bill gets accolades and then some for securing the release of American journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling from North Korea. She reportedly had to answer a lot of questions on that topic when she arrived in Africa. And we can’t even imagine the toll all that travel takes on a person. It can’t be easy being married to Bill and having a famous last name. But was it a little too defensive?

On another note, Mrs. Clinton is addressing a serious problem in the Congo: sexual violence. She is in the eastern region of Kivu today to meet with rape victims. Aid workers say as many as 400 women are raped every month in Eastern Congo, which has been plagued by ethnic wars and violent militias that have displaced hundreds of thousands of people seeking refuge. Women who attempt simple acts like leaving their home to find food are at risk of violent and humiliating attacks. Rapes also occur when women are sleeping in their refugee camps.

Clinton, a longtime women’s rights advocate, said continuing sexual and gender-based violence in Kivu is "truly one of mankind’s greatest atrocities."

"The entire society needs to be speaking out against this," Clinton said. "It should be a mark of shame that this happens anywhere in any country … We have to speak out against the impunity of those in positions of authority who either commit these crimes or condone them."

She said she will be pushing for help for "those who are being abused and mistreated and particularly the women who are turned into weapons of war through the rape that they experience."

In Goma, Clinton might meet with President Joseph Kabila and UN peacekeepers, and will participate in a roundtable discussion with victims of sexual and gender-based violence in the country. Let’s hope she can make some inroads in a country that desperately needs to take better care of its women.

Not interested in playing stupid games, Victoria.   Go ask a democrat on this site and see if they can give you the answer you already know.   Geez….

Deber,

I can’t believe what I just read. "It’s a lovely plan and I’m sure all of us hope it works for these women but it is way too soon to applaud something that hasn’t happened."

The reason I find it hard to believe (even coming from you ) is you were one of the Right Wingers who for the past year

defended everything George Bush did……even commending him for the War in Iraq……….You were APPLAUDING loud and clear every opportunity you got. Why don’t you try taking a mouth full of your own words and swallow them.

He was at The War in Iraq for over 8 years and we’re still there.  Were those his Lovely plans for the hundreds of thousands of people who died. STAND UP AND APPLAUD, you who are so proud of that man. Something did happen there and is continuing……….but nothing good. But of course he’s a Republican so that excuses everything………RIGHT?

GIVE ME A BREAK.

One thing every single American should remember and shouldn’t have to be reminded is……..President Obama is the President of our Entire Country………Republicans, Democrats and Independent. If he fails………..SO DO WE ALL!

Well, Dona, this isn’t about the War in Iraq, which, as you know, I feel very strongly about.   This is about Hillary Clinton receiving accolades for something that hasn’t happened yet.   She has earmarked the money for these wonderful projects, but until that money actually gets there and the people take advantage of it, I see no reason to stand up and applaud her.   Call me a realist.   I hope it makes a difference for these women.   Truly I do when, and if, the money gets there.   Cash for Clunkers hasn’t reimbursed the dealerships yet.    Hopefully they will soon.   Meanwhile, the dealerships have lost confidence in the White House and some are asking the buyers to sign a document that if Obama doesn’t reimburse them they will pay the $4500.00.   Geez…where’s the love for Obama?  No confidence?   Breathtaking…

Hillary Clinton also said this this week:

"Our democracy is still evolving. You know we’ve had all kinds of problems in some of our past elections, as you might remember. In 2000, our presidential election came down to one state where the brother of the man running for president was the governor of the state, so we have our problems too," she said."

There’s just no accounting for who has class and who doesn’t anymore.   For a Secretary of State to go to Nigeria and make a comment like this is well, is classless.   There were many comments she could’ve made but once again she shot herself in the foot.

Obama is the president now and he continues to be a disappointment to millions of Americans.   Even the democrats on Huffington Post are making negative remarks about the president.   It is turning into a dominoe effect, Dona.   This is what happens when an inexperienced left leaning man is elected to the highest office in our country.    Obama did’t surround himself with the right people and he has Nancy Pelosi, the biggest thorn in his side, making him look bad at every turn.   My personal opinion, as always.

Unlike the Republicans, Democrats will always criticize their own when they disagree. Don’t take it to mean more than it does. President Obama is doing just fine with "millions of Americans" and if you think anyone who voted for Barack Obama in -08 would EVER consider voting for the Republican party in 10 or 12, you are dreaming. There is always room for criticism within a party and even within a country, especially when the country is in a time of crisis and emotions are high, that does not mean the president is in trouble by any means. This is the real world, not FOX alter reality where everything exists in sound bytes.

And btw… Bush would have sold his mother for President Obama’s poll numbers.

Sorry, DeBurca, I’m not a dreamer….never have been.   By the way, plenty of Americans were upset with George Bush and Dick Cheney.  So, we are quite capable of criticizing our own.   I love the way you lump all republicans together and then say "it is so."   It’s absolutely not "so."

I don’t think Bush is worrying about Obama’s poll numbers, especially lately….his popularity is plummeting every day.   A report came out today and is scattered across the news that 78% of ALL Americans want the failed stimulus money BACK.   Your own democrats are pushing back from Obama policy.   Quite frankly, things are not working for this inexperienced president.   He arrived a good salesman and he will leave unable to sell a stone.    When Americans today are  asked if they fear the government more or the insurance companies, the polls clearly show that Americans fear government more.   Yes, indeed, emotions  are certainly  running high.

Look, DeBurca, you’ll go down with the sinking ship.  We all know that.  In fact, I believe you’ll be the last person on this site to admit that Obama is in way over his head.   He surrounded himself with clowns, educated clowns who were long on flow charts and short on common sense.

You don’t have CABLE (you mentioned that some time ago)  so you can’t really be familiar with FOX news.   You are repeating what the lefties are telling you about Fox.   You are reading you’ll know that Fox News audiences are soaring.   So, they must be doing something right.   You only put Fox down because the president does.  One thing about President Obama he does not handle criticism well and it shows.

And, finally, I read your post a few days ago that the public option has to stay.   Well, what a different a day makes, huh?  This administration is running around in circles.   As the old saying goes, "The left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing."   That pretty much describes the chaos in the White House today.

Sorry, DeBurca, things aren’t looking so good for your star.

deber, if I wanted a daily dose of FOX buzz words and spin, I’d get cable. Your posts are just repeats, same ole same ole. We all know you want the president to fail, it’s old, tired news. Instead of dedicating so much time to negativity and wishing for the failure of President Obama, you’d do better to start focusing on finding some decent human beings to run as Republicans instead of the misfits the Party is coming up with. As much as FOX would like you to believe it, a party is not going to win on negativity and obstructionism… it has to actually OFFER something. You won’t win elections satisfying the base alone, everyone else ‘has left the building’.

Here is an example of the Republican base… THIS is the only kind of vote coming the Party’s way (I’ll bet you can’t even watch the whole thing, it’s pretty painful):

As you must know by now, Obama cannot possibly win in 2012.   Hillary Clinton cannot possibly win in 2012.   Nancy Pelosi cannot possibly survive as Speaker of the House.   Looks like "The Indians are circling the wagon" so to speak.   Most Americans today identify as conservatives.   And, I’m not surprised.

Presidential Popularity

"After just eight months, the President is at a 50/50 cross-roads in the polls. The once hope-and-change exuberance has dissipated. Such unpopularity is hardly new; what is novel is the rapidity in which a 70%+ approval rating has plummeted to 50%."

AREN’T THEY GETTING TIRED OF CALLING OBAMA OPPONENTS RACISTS?

"I’m a little ashamed to admit it, but despite my constant mockery of everything Obama during the presidential campaign (what can I say, I’m a partisan hack), I now realize how much I actually bought into some of his absolutely empty hope and change rhetoric.

When Barack Obama said he was a post-racial candidate, I initially believed him. He seemed different from Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, who are incapable of seeing any issue as something other than a conflict between two races. I thought that while his election would be bad for a lot of issues I cared about, it might actually be worth losing on those issues just to move past silly race issues.

Yes, quite naive.

For me, the first indication that Obama was not at all post-racial was finding out what a racist loon his preacher for twenty years was. While I never actually thought Obama hated white people, it was disturbing how easily he tolerated that issue to gain street cred in Chicago. And what should have been obvious is that someone who is that cynical and opportunistic about race issues is going to be even more so when fighting for and wielding more power. Except now he has the entire national media with him.

So here we are: A black Democrat has been elected president, and suddenly all the positions on health care and taxes conservatives have always had are now racist. And I have come to the now obvious conclusion that America can never become post-racial while electing Democrats.

Liberals have always had a problem debating with conservatives. They don’t really understand conservatives’ attraction to individualism and honor and responsibility enough to be able to come up with coherent responses when people say they want low taxes and a small government. All liberals know is that they are very smart, and everyone else is very dumb for not seeing how smart they are and that they should run everything. So they come up with childish name-calling, such as “conservatives are greedy” and “conservatives are evil” to try and shut up what they don’t understand. And they find there is nothing better than the cry of “racism.”

As you keep praising a president who has shown America that he cannot lead, I will keep pointing out where he is failing.   Fair?

Kristy, unfortunately, I believe she did that in such a way that her popularity rating may even go below Nancy Pelosi’s.

deber B, Now that would really be going low under the limbo stick.  She should keep her cool at all times; but none of the administration do, so she’s just adding herself to the long list of goof-ups on board.

It’s a darn shame that the takeaway from the story is about Hillary’s ill-considered response, rather than the tragedy of sexual violence in the Congo.  Sure, in hindsight, even Hillary wishes she had paused and perhaps asked for a clarification of the question.  But none of us is perfect, and we all say things we’d give anything to take back. Even President Obama had to hold a beer summit as penance, after he spoke stupidly about the Cambridge police.  I’m just glad I don’t hold public office, so when I say imprudent things, only a few people are mad at me, rather than a few million.

Mary Mooney…oh my goodness, somebody raided the Stepford wives panty and the gang is all here… lockstep and all. Actually Obama spoke the truth about Crowley…and it surprised me to no end how Republicans didn’t support that fact that he wasn’t being politically correct. My goodness normally Republicans are up in arms because someone tries to shut them down when they are saying what they believe rather than the "politically correct" thing. So was I surprised when they did support the President telling the truth. Amazing, the Republicans are really off their game these days.
