Hillary Clinton Meets With Sexual Violence Victims in Congo, Says 'My Husband Is Not the Secretary of State' (Video)

Clinton explodes when audience member asks what her husband thinks of a government policy; fights for women rape victims used as ‘weapons of war.’

Hillary Clinton is making headlines today for lashing out at a student in the Democratic Republic of Congo who asked about her husband’s opinion on a policy issue instead of her own. But she’s also getting some attention for a good cause: meeting with rape and sexual violence victims in that war-torn country.

As for the secretary of state’s public outburst, while on a whirlwind seven-nation African tour an audience member apparently hit a nerve when asking what "Mr. Clinton" thought of a World Bank concern about a Chinese loan proffer to the Congolese government.

"Wait — you want me to tell you what my husband thinks?" Clinton asked. "My husband is not the secretary of state, I am … You ask my opinion I will tell you my opinion, I’m not going to be channeling my husband." Watch the video of Clinton’s response below.

ABC News says the translator made a mistake and asked about Bill Clinton, when the student was actually asking what President Obama thought.

But even if it was a matter of something lost in translation, we should give her a break. She’s toiling in Africa for good causes with little attention while her husband Bill gets accolades and then some for securing the release of American journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling from North Korea. She reportedly had to answer a lot of questions on that topic when she arrived in Africa. And we can’t even imagine the toll all that travel takes on a person. It can’t be easy being married to Bill and having a famous last name. But was it a little too defensive?

On another note, Mrs. Clinton is addressing a serious problem in the Congo: sexual violence. She is in the eastern region of Kivu today to meet with rape victims. Aid workers say as many as 400 women are raped every month in Eastern Congo, which has been plagued by ethnic wars and violent militias that have displaced hundreds of thousands of people seeking refuge. Women who attempt simple acts like leaving their home to find food are at risk of violent and humiliating attacks. Rapes also occur when women are sleeping in their refugee camps.

Clinton, a longtime women’s rights advocate, said continuing sexual and gender-based violence in Kivu is "truly one of mankind’s greatest atrocities."

"The entire society needs to be speaking out against this," Clinton said. "It should be a mark of shame that this happens anywhere in any country … We have to speak out against the impunity of those in positions of authority who either commit these crimes or condone them."

She said she will be pushing for help for "those who are being abused and mistreated and particularly the women who are turned into weapons of war through the rape that they experience."

In Goma, Clinton might meet with President Joseph Kabila and UN peacekeepers, and will participate in a roundtable discussion with victims of sexual and gender-based violence in the country. Let’s hope she can make some inroads in a country that desperately needs to take better care of its women.

Hilary has done a lot for our country - given almost her whole life to America!  If she feels it necessary to set straight once in a while - she should.  Maybe in a place like Africa - where women are basically cattle- she needs to carry a firm hand.

My thoughts on - many areas- of Africa are pretty radical.  Those filthy perverted men are misfits and should be castrated.  They rape women, and some of those men think its their "right" to initiate young boys and girls by sodemy.  They should be tried for murder if they are passing the HIV virus while pleasuring themselves - thats all they are doing sick animals.

Your words: ‘My thoughts on-many areas-of Africa are prettey radical. Those filthy perverted men are misfits and should be castrated. I agree with your sentiments. Look what happened in America when this behavior was allowed to continue for hundreds of years under the banner of Slavery. These filthy dirty slave owning male misfits should have been castrated. They destroyed homes. They pleasured themselves by raping and sodomizing women and girls. They castrated men, lynched both males and females, fathered millions of children and sold them into slavery. Unfortunately, they were never tried for murder. Yes, Paula L Hawkins Johnson "Sick Animals" indeed !

There is a massive effort to educate Citizens regarding the myths and realities of HIV and AIDS. For the longest a myth was spread by the ignorant that if you slept with a virgin you would be cured of HIV and AIDS. Many female babies and children were raped and killed as a result.

" A Missed Opportunity"

The focus should have been on Rape as a Weapon of War. The rapes of women and children are taking place daily. Now, men have become it’s newest victims. The Congo has been declared the "Rape Capital of the World."

Men are leaving their families and homes. They are ashamed. They are being ridiculed by their community members and named the wives of their rapists.

Hillary was exhausted. Hillary was outraged!…. Hubby is getting all the attention. Hillary you are in Africa representing the United States of America!…. Hillary, you’re the Secretary of State. You are not in Africa as a private citizen and tourist.

These excuses won’t wash!…. She should have exercised more self control. This is reminiscent of her bursting into tears during the campaign. I’m surprised the media didn’t declare "it was probably her time of the month." There are no high fives coming from me!

With much respect to all my fellow posters, I think Hillary did an awesome job.  She showed this audience that women will put men in their place when they get out of line.  I am proud to be represented by her.

I know my opinion may not be a popular opinion, but at least we are allowed opinons in this country.

I feel so much for the women Hillary is trying to help.

That’s from my blog I published yesterday—- these lapses happen to all of us… Barack, you, me.  Sometimes your best foot drags behind the one you put in your mouth. (www.thehourglasssolution.com)

Hilary’s reaction wasn’t prudent, but it was excellent!

Perhaps she wishes she could retract that statement.  Perhaps not.  But that one statement most certainly does not define her as a politician or statesman.  That is silly.  Also, we do not know what kind of relationship she has with her husband or the President.  Who among us knows her so personally and is such an expert on the Sec. of State?

Why, Maggie — those same ones among us who can tell the future for everything political……..they ignore the incompetence of their own leaders (Jindal, Gringrich, Sanderson, et. al) and predict the demise of Hillary Clinton because she reacted to what she perceived as an insult, although I guess it was just a flawed interpretation.

Never for one minute can they drop the snarky remarks and acknowledge the good Hillary has done for women internationally……..they prefer women like Sarah Palin……..she never loses her cool.   =)

People who are hypercritical of everything Obama and everything Clinton, and well everything Democratic make it impossible for anyone else to be critical at all! I’d love to say a thing or two about Mrs Clinton, but how can I when all the very worst things possible have already been laid in her lap?! In effect, all that leaves me is either to defend Mrs Clinton or agree with the hyper-naysayers. Oh well. So much for gray areas. P.S. Don’t forget to add Grassley to your list.

I am sure that despite having recently fractured her elbow, Sec. of State Clinton has dedicated hundreds of hours on behalf of this country. It must have grated on her nerves seeing Bill receive international accolades for his brief, high-profile visit to N. Korea. I can imagine that her thought process might have been, "Damn! I’m working my tail off here, and Bill’s getting all the credit." A perfectly natural, human reaction. However, I think Sec. Clinton is trying much too hard to imitate the old male model of Secretary of State - tough, unyielding, confrontative. Instead, she should look at the diplomacy of former Secretary Madeline Albright who was widely respected, very strong and successful without losing her femininity or playing a "macho" role. If Sec. Clinton were able to relax a bit, become more authentic and less defensive, I believe she would gain ground whenever she goes. She’s extremely intelligent and she has a wonderful sense of humor. I wish she’d let those parts of her character shine through.

Hello, Maurine, so very nice to see you again. I miss you and the old gang. I have to disagree with you re: your comparison of Albright and Clinton. Madeline was/is one tough cookie and her foray into the Bosnia situation caused much friction and many problems. As she confessed to Wesley Clark:  “They’ve called it my war(Bosnia) and (Pentagon)they’ve turned on me. Now they’ll turn on you.” The toughness these women have to have when taking arduous jobs like these is tenfold, and yes, one hopes that their feminine self doesn’t get lost in the struggle. But we see women from all over the world in demanding positions that are able to retain the softness, the motherliness, the humor, etc. I have seen many shots of Clinton throughout her travels laughing it up with one or another. Since we aren’t riding her coat tails we really don’t know what comes shining through, do we? Anyway, I’ll say it again. I miss you. How have you been?
