Two former First Ladies are making headlines today — on Sonia Sotomayor, Michelle Obama and whether President Obama is ready to get those three o’clock AM phone calls.

Speaking to ABC’s "This Week" on Sunday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton admitted that she told the president "no" when he first asked her to be his chief diplomat. After all, she had just come off an exhausting presidential campaign of her own, and was looking forward to getting back to the Senate and working for New Yorkers. Plus — can you say "awkward" at the thought of working for the man you publicly fought with for months in the public eye in the battle for the White House, bashing him for not being ready for the job of commander in chief? Clinton even recommended other people she thought were better for the job, but the president was persistent — he wouldn’t take "no" for an answer.

"Ultimately, it came down to my feeling that, number one, when your president asks you to do something for your country, you really need a good reason not to do it," Clinton said. "Number two, if I had won and I had asked him to please help me serve our country, I would have hoped he would say yes."

And remember those three AM phone-call commercials Clinton’s campaign launched against Obama during the presidential race, questioning whether he could handle international crises? Well, she now, of course, says he’s more than fit and able to deal with such emergencies.

"The president, in his public actions and demeanor, and certainly in private with me and with the national security team, has been strong, thoughtful, decisive. I think he is doing a terrific job. And it’s an honor to serve with him," she said.

Former First Lady Laura Bush gave her first interview since leaving the White House to ABC. She talked about life after the White House, how her husband, George Bush, feels he "owes President Obama his silence," and also called Supreme Court nominee Sotomayor a "very interesting and good nominee," and said she’s "proud" at the thought there may soon be another woman on the bench. And she’s keeping a very close eye on Michelle Obama, to whom she gave a tour of the White House shortly before packing her bags and moving out of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

"I like to watch her. I think she’s doing great," Bush said. "I remember what it’s like, those first few months that you live at the White House where you’re still looking for the light switches … And then to be there with their little girls reminded me a lot of being there with my big girls … it’s a very, very nice place for family life."

I agree Laura Bush was always a great role model for American woman.  Smart, supportive and always the teacher.  I’m also glad that George Bush is doing exactly that letting the new President find his own way.  As for Hilary well lets get real here ladies & gentlemen she would have been content helping us New Yorkers.  Yeah right.  That was a stepping stone to running for President and if she thinks that "Duty Calls" crap cuts it in my eyes she underestimates the intelliegence of New Yorkers.  She knew where the strongest Democractic state was and moved to Chappaqua or better known as "Home Sweet Home"  which she never was at.

Laura Bush is "the" role model for a First Lady.  I especially like the way both George and Laura Bush are not criticizing our new administration.  That shows how classy and correct they are.   As they have endured and continue to endure being criticized by this new administration, they stand tall with dignity and confidence.

Hillary Clinton has had a long hard road since leaving the White House as First Lady.   She ran a brillant campaign, failed, got up dusted herself off and look where she is today.   She, too, is a role model for women.  I had actually forgotten that Jill Biden said Joe was asked first to be Secretary of State!

Regarding Sotomayor, I believe Laura Bush is a "lady first" and even if she doesn’t agree with Obama’s nominee will remain neutral.   Good call, Laura!!

"I think she sounds like a winner and a good nominee," Bush said of Sonia Sotomayor, the federal appeals judge Obama picked.

Mrs. Bush said in an interview broadcast Monday on ABC’s "Good Morning America" that "as a woman, I’m proud that there might be another woman on the court. I wish her well."

She’s got class unlike her husband.

Laura Bush is such a good role model.   She never has anything bad to say about anyone.   I adore her husband, BTW.

You "adore" him?  Deber, you poor misguided person.

I doubt it.  All that remains to be seen is whether he will be considered a worse president than James Buchanan or Andrew Johnson.  He failed in almost every way possible.  The only thing he didn’t do was have a sex scandal.

It’s nice to see President Obama continue with many of Bush’s policies.   That speaks for itself.   Laura Bush continues to be a fine example of the perfect First Lady.    And, George Bush, has the grace to remain silent as the White House unfolds and extends to massive lengths.

yes deber, we have noticed. I admire Hillary Clinton and do believe she had to think about this position before accepting.

deber:  As they have endured and continue to endure being criticized by this new administration, they stand tall with dignity and confidence.

You are so right.  I can find nothing to criticize Laura Bush about, she was excellent in her role.  The lashing out at former President Bush is all about the Dems wanting to hold on to what they have recently won.  It’s been a long eight years for them.  George Bush is a kind man, and I think he understands what’s going on and is willing to ignore it.

As for Hillary Clinton, I admired her more then (when she was campaigning) than I do now.  I would probably never vote for her again.

George and Laura Bush are a class act.  The lashing out from the left has only hurt their party.
