If an olive branch can not be extended in this world, what are we really choosing for our futures? I think it was done with heart and respect and that is all anyone really ask for when they are recieving in life.
Linda: If an olive branch can not be extended in this world,…
This is what Ayatollah Ali Khamenei says, in part, of the branch:
Saying that a change of US words was not enough, Khamenei said: "We will watch and we will judge … You change, our behaviour will change." Aljazeera
It will all come down to blind trust on the part of Americans. As for Iran, they know what their agenda is. I’d prefer that the U.S. err on the side of caution.
He extended it to the people of a country that is totally controlled by their government. You can be put to death in Iran for the smallest thing and I personally think he may well have endangered the lives of some people there. Just another way that he continues to demonstrate his inexperience.
can can, Have you never heard of the Patriot Act, or that as President Georgie Bush decided that HE could deem anyone an enemy combatant and have them imprisoned without charges, due process, or possibility of release? If President Obama doesn’t choose to end that form of Oligarchy we will continue to be a country ruled by the few, have no middle class, and closely resemble a Third World Nation. CA
Kind of like what happened at the AIG hearings this last week….our congress acted like Dictators and went after them and demanded names so they can be published and ridiculed….they ignored our constitution….your obama should have stopped the damnation! This is not how US citizens should be treated!
obama treats Iranians with more respect than he does successful people in this country. obama or his henchmen will attack Joe the Plumber and Rush Limbaugh but reach out to a two bit dictator that absolutely hates what America stands for. I just don’t get it! Scary days indeed!
ANDHOWCANTHISBE??? He is the true master of American destruction the 3rd jihad trained for years…who’s money put him where he ? Muslim and terrorists countries wanting to destroy us from within…we almost do not have America the way we all knew it NOW…what more devastating things do you think they are capable of and will do soon if people do not open their eyes and minds to the truth!!
Sharon…would you ever have thought in this lifetime we would have to defend America to other Americans??? What has happened?? Is this the "so-called change" that they voted for? obama is taking this country down a path no one would have ever believed it could happen here…..I just pray there are enough dems in office now who are shaking their heads and not going to allow this to happen…it’s time to start listening to the Republicans in office and take a stand!!
The salient values of Middle Eastern cultures are "Justice and Respect." Not individual freedom and "olive branches" and diplomacy. Obama is displaying great naivte to think that unilateral overtures from a position of weakness (quick retreat from Iraq) will improve our standing in the region.
Iran and many Arab countries believe that injustices are committed against them by Israel and the United States. They want these injustices "reversed" and they respect "power" rather than empathy. When Obama offers to "open a dialogue" he looks "weak." When the United States looks "weak" bad things happen.
Not that I think that treating any country with simple decency is a sign of weakness. I think that after 8 years of having a president that treated the rest of the world with no respect (and hence got little to none in return) it is nice to have a president that has the STRENGTH be open to the possibility of dialog with countries that we have so many differences with. After all it is easy to talk with your friends…much harder & risky to talk to someone that doesn’t live in your neighborhood, or look or act like you.
How can you say they respect power, they did not respect Pres. Bush and they knew full well how he has weaken our country. I bet Bin Laden is laughing his butt off at the mess the U.S. is in. First they attacked us, now they watch as our country goes bankrupt, great fun! In case you don’t remember, Iran offered support after 911 but our "great leader" didn’t even respond. This would have been a good time to open a dialogue with them and I think it would have benefited us greatly. I wish also the the U. S. would quit constantly siding with EVERYTHING Israel wants, they are not blameless in this mess either.

Better we look "weak" than dumb & arrogant…
