Israeli Official Seeks Swine Flu Name Change

Israeli health minister prefers ‘Mexican flu’ over ‘swine flu’ because of religious reasons.

Israeli Health Minister Yaakov Litzman bristles at the mention of swine flu.

Though that’s the name most international officials have used to describe the pig-born pandemic, Litzman, an Orthodox Jew, insists we should refer to it as "Mexican Flu," because the "swine" offends Jewish and Muslim religious sensibilities. Both religions consider pork to be unclean and prohibit ingestion, so wouldn’t the negative connotations be welcome? And isn’t calling it "Mexican Flu" offensive to Mexican people?

Meanwhile, Israel has identified at least one case of the controversially named illness: A 28-year old man has come down with it, but is expected to make a full recovery. Another man remains in quarantine as doctors determine what ails him, the BBC reports.

Isn’t this strain of the flu typically found within pigs?

OK; that got the only laugh out of me today. thanks, D!  (FYI: it reminded me of how they had to change the name of  "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" in Britain for obvious reasons… well… not nearly as serious, but why not focus on finding a CURE for the disease rather than being offended by the name?  Or is that just me being… well, me.

Hey deber! Speaking of flu (and we are here at this topic), I guess our comments on the other flu post ‘flew the coop’ because I never was able to read your comment that began ‘my husband’s nephew…’ Did he have the flu, swine or otherwise? (Notice I am staying on topic so you can get this hopefully!!) I also missed another comment of yours to me from yesterday - perhaps I am a victim of ‘swine flu censorship’!

I think it is totally stupid, because to Muslims and Jewish people pigs are unclean……well I guess they do have common ground after all.

if they think pigs are unclean i would think they would welcome the naming of a disease after them…

right?

Oh…and calling it "Mexican Flu" wouldn’t offend anyone?  Get real.

Why not call it  IF-2009-001  [international flu in 2009, the first one of the year]. That ought to keep everyone satsfied.
