Joan Ganz Cooney 'Appalled' at Hillary Clinton's Head Scarf

Joan Ganz Cooney

I have to admit that I was appalled to see Hillary Clinton in a head scarf when she was in Ramallah recently on an official visit. First, I think a U.S. Government official when on government business is genderless, that it is not a woman official or a man official; just an official. Second, the head scarf is a symbol of the subjugation of women and a religious belief, at that. Would she wear a crucifix if she met with the pope? I’m sure she was told she should show respect for the culture but I have to ask why, when the culture supports beliefs that we and certainly Hillary Clinton are repelled by.

If I remember my history right, the three monotheistic religions all required or still require their women to cover their hair.  I remember the days when you could not go into a Catholic Church without your hair covered.  Orthodox Jewish women also cover their hair.  My Muslim friends also covered their hair when out—in their homes the hair is uncovered.  I saw nothing wrong with the respect that Hillary showed.

Mary E Sayler, the only women in normative Orthodox Judaism who are required to cover their hair in public are married women. The rule is somewhat relaxed when they are at home depending on the circumstances. Single women are not required to cover their hair.

I don’t see you logic nor that of many other posters here. If the leader of for example India were a Sikh, a sect where the men are required to grow their hair long and wind it into a turban, would a visiting US male Secretary of State wear a turban "as a sign of respect"? I think not.

The Sikh boys that I taught wore their hair in a knot on top of their heads I don’t remember when they started to wear the turban but my Muslim girls started to wear the scarf to school in Third Grade.  My Native American male student wore his hair in a long braid down his back.  A Male Secretary of State, to show respect to a Sikh, should make sure that his hair is clean.  The Sikh grows his hair long as respect to his God and the turban is worn to keep it clean because having any part of your body dirty is disrespectful to God.

And yet, when I visited an Orthodox Temple as a married woman- I was asked to cover my hair, and I did.  And the men in my family were asked to were a yarmulke.

About as funny as when she was campaigning and speaking to a mostly black audience. Her tone and language changed completely to sound like most of her audience.  Hilarious then.  Chameleon at heart I guess.

I didn’t catch that but didn’t Michelle Obama do it too?

I must be slow on the uptake today but I did not even register Ramallah in Cooney’s statement. Now, thinking about it I am actually disgusted. First I do not agree with current US policy to elevate this criminal pseudo government run by people who formerly specialized in Mafia-type hits to the status of a real government, so the cultural nods are really inappropriate. I posted below with a host of reasons that I will not repeat, but just for kicks say the US did some turns in diplomacy—my comparison would not be to the Pope or QE, but for example—would Clinton wear a banana laden turban—or maybe a beret— when meeting with Raul Castro, would she have worn a ring through her nose when meeting with Idi Amin, or go barebreasted to see the leader of Zimbabwe? Just asking.

What an irresponsible statement for anyone who has a basic knowledge about the people of [modern] Uganda and Zimbabwe.

How funny Carol! I thought the same thing. Obama did the very same thing, affecting a more "black"  speaking pattern. What frauds.

Frankly, I was shocked when I read Joan Ganz Cooney’s intro - I thought far better of her intelligence, overall. How quickly we forget the embarassing fauz pas Barbara Walters made interviewing Kdafhi when she told him she knew he was lying because he wasn’t looking her in the eye! Either Ms. Walters simply disregarded the culture into which she was going or the network assumed that she did! That was the talk of the town for a year!

It is about time that our nation reapected other people, and evidenced respect for all, because when it comes do life it is humans that lead the pack, and right now our nation is listing in the other direction when we let thousands die here without medical care, much less an opportunity to enroll in CMS, and the nation’s ‘leaders’ argue and fight over what is merely humane.

Most of you hit the mark on this, and kindly supported Secretary Clinton, but I cannot refrain from writing again that Cooney’s ignornace is shocking.

Singing On; What should have been embarrassing for Walters was not realizing that if Kdafhi’s lips were moving, he was lying.

Interesting that you speak of "respecting other people", yet continue to call Joan "ignorant". It is not ignorant to question if this  county should subject one of our female diplomats to a custom that the males do not have to follow.

This is a question of standing on our beliefs as a Nation in front of the world. Leading by example would have been a stronger message.

Pssstt.. Joan, Catholics don’t wear crucifixes; only priests and nuns are alowed to wear them. They do however wear crosses. In my case I wear the tarranis the Catholics usurped from us Celts. :)

It is a sign of respect, not subservience. Men cover their heads in some cultures, as well. Somehow, Americans have difficulty understanding that bikinis, short sleeves, low cut dresses, and uncovered hair  are not acceptable in many places.

Of course, Mrs. Clinton would cover her  head and arms if she met the Pope; she is not required to wear a crucifix. Get over that careless and casual  American  point of view that everything we do is appropriate all over the world. It isn’t.

As for the  remarks about covering one’s head, not only do Muslims do it, but other religions and cultures follow similar customs; covering one’s head is customary & respectful. Get a passport, leave your jeans &, sleeveless clothing behind, bring some skirts below the knees, and cover your shoulders, and visit  those many places; if you do, observe others, and try to  behave as they do, so perhaps we won’t be considered such awkward and rude  visitors.

Hilary Clinton behaved appropriately and it was not a ruse to convince her hosts about anything. It demonstrates good manners! The diplomatic corps learns that before venturing abroad.

Really…I do not recall Laura Bush ever wearing a head scarf when she visited Afghanistan  on her missions to support women’s emancipation and freedom there but if any of you have a photo showing her wearing one, I will stand corrected.  Of course, Laura was pretty low key about those missions so maybe there wasn’t a photo op to be had.  Just like I do not think an American should curtsey to the Queen of England, I do not think an American woman should wear a head scarf to appease cultures which subjugate women.   I didn’t know that Michelle Obama wore black lace to meet the Pope…but as a pre-Vatican II Catholic I will tell you that there is no tradition in the Catholic religion that says women should wear black lace when meeting the Pope.   Or a scarf for that matter (although they did make us put some sort of hankie on our head for awhile…but that tradition ended in 1963 so…at least Michelle didn’t wear a J Crew Cardigan and I will give her credit for that).

Whether you like Hllary or not (and I do not) she still is the Secretary of State of our country and should represent our values of equality of the sexes.  She is no longer a first lady.  Comparisons to Laura Bush and Michelle Obama are not relevant.    Hillary, as Secretary of State, is the manifestation of our country when she goes abroad as much as the President is.   Can you imagine the President of the United States BOWING to  another country’s leader?  That would be insane.  Our country was founded on priniciples of equality not the manners of the court of King George III or Louis the XVI!

I remember the scorn the media dumped on Nancy Reagan when she curtsied to the Queen of England (and that was not a good thing for her to do) as some sort of royal sychophant.  Well, I would much prefer that Hillary curtsey to Elizabeth the II, who is at least on our side, than don sharia garb to appease our enemies.

Oh..did Condoleeza Rice wear a head scarf when she met with leaders of Muslim states?    I don’t recall that she did.   But then…she was raised in a culture where she experienced the oppression muslims inflict on women .    Ask her about how when in the south we should do as the south does and ban blacks from lunch counters.

There is a link to a photo of Laura Bush wearing a scarf on the first page of comments provided by Diana T.

Ms. Clinton did exactly the right thing in wearing the scarf in her roll as a diplomat.
