Joan Ganz Cooney on One of the Great Scandals of Our Democracy

Joan Ganz Cooney
Of course ground combat should be open to women and, for heaven’s sake, when are we going to insist that includes openly gay people? The idea that the armed services are closed to openly gay MEN (forget for the moment women) is one of the great scandals of our democracy.

We are suppose to be for freedom for all.Liberty and justice for all. Have you noticed Joan how the hate rhetoric on gays and lesbians,on illegal immigrants, on anyone who is not white and christian in America. It is a sickening shame that people who are qualified for a job lose it because not of incompetence but who they are. I think we are at a pivotal point in this country. We can go backward or we can go into the 21s century and actually mean liberty and justice for all.

Woman are already in ground combat positions, the new wars have no front lines to speak of. The military sadly does not allow women into combat orientated units like the grunts or infantry which I believe is putting women at a disadvantage when it comes to protecting themselves in these hostile situations. I personally would not have wanted to be in an infantry unit strictly due to hygienic reasons, when the guys came back from from the Gulf war their camies could stand up by themselves from not being washed in over three months, and they had not had showers in over three months. I would have worried about female type infections and PMSing in the combat zone.
