Joan Ganz Cooney Praises Jon Stewart
In response to: From Lucille Ball to Ellen DeGeneres to Chelsea Handler, what comedienne cracks you up?
I laugh easily at comedians, particularly if they use irony in their routines. Jon Stewart and some of his cohorts make me laugh every night before I go to bed. I love his exposure of the hypocrisy of politicians.

Jon Stewart’s irony would be lost on anyone who hadn’t already watched the "real" news people, Mel.
Not really. I rarely ever watch "real" news, but I get Jon Stewart’s irony, and I love his show.
I agree that you have to have some understanding of the news to get the best of the jokes (I get my "real" news via the ‘net generally), but the fact that folks don’t trust the other, "real" news is true and a big part of why Stewart won a recient poll as most trustworthy newsman, despite the fact he has often said he is not a newsman at all!
The nice part about the Daily Show and the Colbert Report is that they are honest. When something someone has said mades no sense, is plain wrong, or is an outright lie, they say so! They don’t pretend that facts are fungible and every statment about what the facts are is a valid opinion. Reality is the joke on these shows. They don’t have to lie to get viewers because the real world is funny enough.
The news isn’t trustworthy. Even with print media on-line, I review several sources for the information I am interested in to try and filter out bias, lazy/incorrect reporting, and misinformation. Even with the effort I go to, I probably don’t ever get the full story!
I have seen Jon interviewed and surprised that his show is trusted and quoted over news agencies. He knows it is comedy, why doesn’t everyone else?
