Judy Shepard Does Not Accept Virginia Foxx's 'Hoax' Apology (Video)

Judy Shepard doesn’t believe Virginia Foxx is sorry for describing her son’s murder as a ‘hoax.’

Rep. Virginia Foxx apologized yesterday for describing Matthew Shepard’s murder as a "hoax," but Shepard’s mother, Judy, isn’t accepting it.

Shepard was murdered in 1998 by men who targeted him because he was gay. And, during congressional debates on hate-crime legislation this week, Foxx, a Republican from North Carolina, disputed the motive for Shepard’s death, and said the homophobia attributed to it amounted to nothing more than a hoax.

Following public outcry against her, Foxx yesterday released the following apology: "The term ‘hoax’ was a poor choice of words used in the discussion of the hate-crimes bill … Referencing these media accounts may have been a mistake, but if so, it was a mistake based on what I believed were reliable accounts."

Judy Shepard, who was present when Foxx made the remark, appeared on Rachel Maddow’s MSNBC show last night and said she’s not buying Foxx’s contrition. Via MSNBC:

It’s apologizing for semantics but not her sentiment, her insensitivity or her ignorance … Everyone knew Matthew’s murder was a hate crime, but it couldn’t be prosecuted as a hate crime. We couldn’t call it a hate crime. Getting this bill passed in the House brings gay rights up to the level of equality.

Shepard said she will continue to fight for the legislation until it’s passed, for hate crimes are not about an individual, but about communities.

She made a very disgraceful remark about Mrs Shepards son murder as being a hoax because those folks responsible for his death said they did it because he was gay.  These people have no sensibility when they open their mouths just spout off what will sound good to them, as usual they apologize after the genie is out of the bottle!

Virginia Foxx is the female Jesse Helms. She’s such an embarrassment & I should know because unfortunately she’s my congresswoman. Unfortunately I’m afraid that until the district is redrawn she won’t be voted out; although people here outraged now, probably by the time the election rolls around, it will be forgotten.

I hope your district won’t forget this. She should be dethroned. I’m a fellow North Carolinian. I’ll help your district remember even though I’m in another district. Best to you, Beth.

I hope her opponent in the next election gets enough money to run the you tube clip endlessly before the election.  This  "educated" woman has a lot to learn.

Because of the unrelenting vitriolic statements by so many Right Wing hacks like Coulter and Limbaugh, and people like Michelle Bachmann day after day, the entire Republican Party seems to have become completely desensitized to the point of having no decency when it comes to trying to score political points with the base. Virginia Foxx is just another example of a bankrupt party with no ideas and nothing to offer but crass negativity and rancor. Her comments were disgusting, but nothing new.

It seems to me that the party seems to have lost it’s soul, they say such ridiculous things about the Gov that are so childish and totally out there!   I listen to Glenn Beck/Neal Borst and Hannity on the radio occasionally just so I can hear for myself what they say and it’s like they are living in another world where the Bogey man is now in charge and we are all doomed, it is really sad that people listen to them and believe every last word they say.  Thank God it’s only 21% that have lost the plot but you have to wonder can these folks really be that easily led by those propaganda merchants?

She should apologize.  To trivialize the death of a beautiful young gay man at the hands of brutal killers was inexcusable.  But what is even more inexcusable is why she would oppose the passage of a hate crime bill in his name.    Did Rep. Foxx need a camera moment and seized it?

Before Rep. Foxx speaks publicly again she should know what she’s talking about . When she made the original statement I believe she waas speaking from her own bias & prejudice, not from any "reliable accounts". What a backhanded apology!! If that was the best she could summon, she might as well have not said anything at all. My hearts goes out to Judy Shepard & any other families of hate-targeted crimes. I have always wondered what these ignorant people, like Foxx, would do if one of their family members were gay. Would they shun them, try to de-gay them, or actually continue to love & support them?  I’ll probably never know since she would likely keep that secret in a locked closet.

This particular case was A HOAX of sorts, but the gay lobby used it anyway to turn Matthew into a martyr. The murderers KNEW Matthew, they were all into the Crystal Meth drug scene in Laramie, and most likely knew each other on a social basis. The truth about the robbery motive (not simply gay bashing) in Matthew’s killing is swept under the table because the fairy tale works better for those who seek to exploit Matthew’s memory. Regardless, it’s too darn bad that Matt’s killers didn’t the death penalty for their crime.

Did Matthew Shepard Know His Killers?

Another widely held belief about the case is that McKinney and Shepard had never met before their fateful encounter at the Fireside Lounge. But a number of sources tell "20/20" the two were not strangers.

"Everybody knew Matt Shepard was a partier just like Aaron, just like the rest of us," said Bopp.

In fact, Bopp said he had seen Shepard and McKinney together at parties. "Aaron was selling [drugs] and him and Matt would go off to the side and they’d come back. And Matt would be doing some meth then," he said.

Though they frequented the same party scene, McKinney maintains he had never met Shepard before the night of the crime and wonders why people might say he had. "I’ve never met him. … Maybe they seen us somewhere in the same spot or something. I don’t know," McKinney said.

A bartender familiar with the local drug scene, who asked to be identified only as "Jean," says she was friendly with Shepard. She also says McKinney and Shepard knew each other.

When she learned of the beating, she said, she recalls thinking, "It’s either money or dope, yeah. He’d be the perfect target especially because Aaron knew him."

This is the first thing I’ve read about this that rings true.  Thank you for posting that article.

Thanks, MJ:

This is a story that truthfully saddens me to the core.  If I lost my child, I don’t know what I’d do.  I don’t blame Mrs. Sheppard (sp?) for her anger and think that the Representative was out of line with the comments.

It’s like wishing cancer on somebody, it’s just horrible and WRONG.  I have no idea why this Rep. would say this crap, but think she should step down.

Good post from both of you on some of the background sorry I didn’t catch it yesterday.

Nan,

Thanks for responding. It’s altogether a sad situation. No problem about not catching it yesterday. Peace.

If you had watched the segment from Rachel’s show, you would know that the ABC reporting has been debunked. The killers even claimed they killed Matthew because he was gay, thinking to use the "gay panic" defense. They changed their tune when they realized the defense was an admission to a hate crime, even if they couldn’t be charged as such.
