A Texas woman named Judy Trunnell became the first American citizen to die from swine flu. Trunnell, a 33-year-old teacher, had "chronic health conditions," which may explain why she succumbed to the virus.
Trunnell’s death is especially shocking because she was eight months pregnant, but her child was delivered via caesarian and, we hope, will be completely healthy. The pregnancy, however, may have had something to do with her death, reports CNN:
Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN’s chief medical correspondent, said patients with medical problems often have compromised immune systems that can’t fight off a flu infection.
‘"Pregnant women often, as you may know, are recommended to get the flu shot because their immune systems aren’t as strong either right during pregnancy and immediately thereafter,’ Gupta said. ‘So there may have been several different things going on with her.’
About 1,516 people are infected with the virus worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.

It is a sad, sad situation…the family must be devastated.
But I have to question the bannering of her name in the media? She was a teacher; a mom to be (did she have other children?) ; a wife; a daughter; many things…and now, she is forever ‘linked’ to a random virus as an identity. Sometimes there is something to be said for media discretion (would it make the warning any less apparent if the headline read ‘New Mom in TX Succombs to Swine Flu…’ Will her family always be thought ‘of’ or interviewed when the H1N1 is mentioned?
Just my thoughts on privacy for a grieving family…
