Laura Ingraham Guest Host Tammy Bruce Calls Michelle Obama 'Trash' (Audio)

Talk about a low blow.

Filling in for conservative talk-show host Laura Ingraham, Tammy Bruce blasted First Lady Michelle Obama for comments she made during a visit to a Washington D.C. classroom last week. During that visit, the first lady recalled trying to get good grades as neighborhood kids criticized her for "talking like a white girl." In light of those remarks, Bruce made fun of Obama for her use of a "weird, fake accent," much "like Hillary did when talking to black people. What?! What is that?"

"That’s what he’s [Barack] married to," Bruce said. "…You know what we’ve got? We’ve got trash in the White House. Trash is a thing that is colorblind, it can cross all eco-socionomic, kind of a, categories. You can work on Wall Street, or you can work at the Wal-Mart. Trash, are people who use other people to get things, who patronize others, who consider you bitter and clingy."

Bruce, who describes herself as an "openly gay, pro-choice, gun owning, pro-death penalty, voted for President Bush authentic feminist," hosts the nationally syndicated "Tammy Bruce Show," flagshipped at KABC Radio in Los Angeles. Last spring, Bruce took some flak for suggesting that Sen. Hillary Clinton suffers from "mythomania … part of a larger psychiatric scheme of people who make up fantastic stories to bolster their own image." Bruce also claimed that Clinton had said daughter Chelsea was "at the World Trade Center on September 11th," even though Clinton never said that.

Needless to say, Bruce’s comments about Michelle O. aren’t being received too highly across the blogosphere. "Today, I bring you Tammy Bruce, who must be at least a sophomore in the Ann Coulter School of Bigotry," says one post on Talking Points Memo.  "I knew Bruce was kinda nuts, but clearly she’s aced Coulter’s introductory classes."

To feature an article with this type of headline is called "yellow journalism" (Yellow journalism is a type of journalism that downplays legitimate news in favor of eye-catching headlines that sell more newspapers (or attract more website hits). It may feature exaggerations of news events, scandal-mongering, sensationalism - source Wikipedia). Regardless of the position taken in the article itself, the headline is meant to invite controversial comments. That was my objection. It insults the First Lady and everyone involved knows it.

Tammy Bruce - "openly gay, pro-choice, gun owning, pro-death penalty, voted for President Bush authentic feminist" — that’s kind of a disconnect, isn’t it?  I mean, I can get everything on the list except the voted for Bush part.  Where does that fit in?

OMG, I cannot believe the vile comments and negativity in this thread. These people will fault the Obamas any snarky, petty way possible. This is becoming obsessive to the point of mental illness.

This is sad.  When President Obama was elected, I thought we really could work together as a country.  But, the hatred that has been put forth since his election by the very few that did not vote for him is really a bad commentary on the country.  If we can’t work together to pull ourselves out of the hole that has been dug over the last 8+ years, we will no longer be one of the strongest countries in the world.  We have already lost a lot of allies due to our lack of international diplomacy.  I really think that if people would just step back and look at the big picture, President Obama has the ability to turn this around.  He deserves our respect and help.  And, I agree about the mental illness, too.  And, the talk show hatred hosts need to tone it down.  You can disagree with someone, but the name calling and hate mongering shows how childish and ill mannered they are.  If they are so brilliant, what is their plan to repair the economy and the country, line item by line item, please?

Patti J — the vast majority of the country is working together.   Do you ever ask yourelf — where do these people get the time to post all day long, day and night on this board over and over again with the negativity until they have worked themselves up into a collective frenzy of nastyness?   Remember, they are probably listening to Limbaugh and his ilk while they are posting.    Remember, for the country at large — 61% support Obama and his efforts.   That’s what counts.

This is the MOST disgusting thread I have ever read. Never have I heard a first lady maligned like this, and it is a shameful reflection of what this country has become. I have lived thru many first ladies…..Eleanor Roosevelt, Bess Truman, Mamie Eisenhower (my first vote for her husband) Jackie Kennedy, Lady Bird Johnson, Pat Nixon, Betty Ford, Rosalind Carter, Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush, Hilary Clinton (well she did get some flack), Laura Bush and now Michelle, who you are all nailing to the cross. I am sure most of you weren’t even  born  when some of these women were first lady. They all were nice women, in spite of the political party of their husband, and they were shown respect due the first lady. I am just shocked and stunned at some of the truly terrible things said, and lack of respect shown here. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Michelle Obama is just like other first ladies, maybe even better educated, has two sweet daughters, and loves her husband. She is making an effort to relate to the public in helpful ways, so just what is the problem that she does not get the same respect she deserves, and too many of you are trashing her in  the most horrid manner. Are you all so lacking in manners that you must do what has never been done before? I am embarrassed for my country that she is  being treated this way, and something terrible is happening to our society.

I agree.  You know, I used to enjoy this group.  Now, it is even more hateful than it was during the elections.  I guess the new motto of the US is "Hatred of anyone who does not agree with you".  The US does allow free speech, but some people really need to think before they spew.

Please don’t begin to think that because the negativity expressed here is indicative of the majority of Americans.   Remember, the people who are posting so hatefully supported the party that got trounced in this last election.    America is still a Democracy(although now that Republicans are no longer the majority — they think when majority rules, it is now facisim).   For now the negative posters pretty much own this website and you can just see them work each other into a frenzy…….if you want a balanced discussion, this is not the place to be.

Thanks for making my point, phil.   And…..beyond that….the mess was in my backyard when I lived in New Mexico — Bush’s polices did nothing to stop anything.   It’s already in the country’s backyard in Arizona……and Texas………       Republicans might be able to be in the majority again, but not unless they drop the fawning over the conservatives……as long as that goes on, the Dems are pretty much going to stay in power.

Racism is alive and well in the USA. If you have no doubt about that read all of these posts and you will see it clearly. We are the sum total of our experiences and not everything is flowers and champagne. Bad things happen to people. Putting your head in the sand like an ostrich doesn’t keep it from happening.

Educating the young people about life is important. They have to know not everything that happens is good. And speaking of one’s experiences and how one rises above the bad things is an inspiration to people.

How many of you walk with your head down when someone of another race walks by you? How many of you snicker at a racial joke? It was stated earlier in these posts that this isn’t the old times and there are no longer slave owners, yet there are people still being killed simply because of the color of their skin. Only a few years ago here in Texas a black man was dragged to death by white men. So when you can eradicate racism and children are no longer afraid because of the color of their skin then we can teach them something else but right now Ya’ll need to open your eyes.

If Tammy Bruce has the right to say what she did Michelle Obama had just as much right to say what she did, which in my opinion she was trying to show the children that you can overcome adversity in your life.

Finally some intelligent people who agree with me. This post is full of filth and racism is still alive. Thank you. I thought I was loosing it for a minute.

Dear D C, I think there are a lot of readers here who agree with you. You and a few like you have done such a wonderful job of expressing our thoughts that you leave us little to add but our thanks. I still cannot grasp what Tammy Bruce was ranting about. Michelle’s remarks were spot on. I found them personally inspirational.
