DC Metro Tragedy | 06/23/2009 9:55 am

At Least 7 Dead and 70-Plus Injured in DC Metrorail Collision

The National Transit Safety Board will be investigating what caused the collision, which is being described as the worst accident in Metrorail’s 33-year history.

At least seven people are dead and more than 70 are injured after a subway train collision in the Washington, DC, area. A commuter train on DC’s red line, the Metro System’s busiest line, rammed into the back of a stopped train during rush hour on Monday.

While investigators do not know for sure what caused the crash, disheartening information coming to light today draws a dark cloud over the 33-year-old Metro System.

Debbie Hersman, Chairwoman of the National Transportation Safety Board, said in a press conference this morning that the NTSB expressed safety concerns three years ago that thousand-series fleets — which were reportedly involved in Monday’s collision — should be either removed or modified. Hersman said that the Metrorail transit system "was not able to do what we asked them to do" and the old trains kept running.

Yesterday’s collision is being described as the worst accident in the Metrorail’s history. The Metro System, a landmark in the District of Columbia, shuffles business workers, tourists and locals from Washington to Maryland and Virginia suburbs.

As investigators continue to search for recorders from the train that was struck, in hopes they will provide information to help determine why the crash occurred, our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.

These accidents are all too common. A CTA Green Line derailed last year in Chicago. An Amtrak passenger train en route from Grand Rapids smashed into the back of a freight train in Chicago in 2007. The engine car landed on top of the freight train, and 30 people were injured. A commuter rail train collided with a freight train in Los Angeles in September ‘08, courtesy of an engineer texting on the commuter rail. Twenty-five were killed. Fifty folks were injured in Boston last month when a pair of trolleys tangled.

Chalk it up, partly, to less enforcement by the feds during the past decade on safety standards.

The more I hear about this the more it sounds like another incident of old infrastructure, in this case public transport, that has not been updated and was an accident waiting to happen. Our priorities are really twisted in this country. If you compare our public transportation with much of Europe’s, it’s quite embarrassing.

Yep. And you can chalk a lot of it up to the Bush economy.

The news is saying these older cars had no recorders on them so the investigation won’t have that resource to draw from.  Also the system runs automatically during rush hour so this may have been a computer failure, or something physical with tracks or brakes.  So many variables to check.

This is absolutely horrible.  I wonder what caused these cars to collide.

All I know is that I just rode the red line a month ago on my trip to the DC Zoo…When I heard about this accident I said a prayer for those that were on board and then looked at my hubby and said, well on our next trip were taking the bus…

But on a more serious note, my prayers go out to those that were killed and for those that were injured I hope you recover quickly & without too many "hang ups" about being on the metro.

This happened in my little corner of the country and it is a big issue here in DC.   Everyone uses the Metro and to know that something went wrong is just not good.   They seem to be working on it most of the time and are replacing old cars with newer cars regularly.   A "thorough" investigation is underway.

So many law suits will come out of this.    I just can’t believe that 7 people were killed and many injured.   How awful.

Deber, when I first heard this and didnt know what train it was, I thought of you and if you were on that train or had anyone you knew on the train.  I was glad to see your posts here today!  Then when I heard what train it was, thinking I was on that same train just a month ago with my family, I got chills and immediatly thanked GOD again for a safe trip and to hold those that were on those trains close to him and the families of the ones who didnt make it.

My hubby said "man there will be some major lawsuits" and there will be…I just hope it doesnt come out that the driver was at fault but if the train was on auto how could it be?

Be safe and GOD Bless!

C Hardy, you are such a joy!  No, dear, I was not on that train but I, too, have taken that line many times.   The Metro needs an overhaul and quickly.    So many people depend on it.   One of the reasons I bought in the area I live in was the proximity to the District and to stay out of northern Virginia traffic at all times.   It can be very challenging.

My heart goes out to the families of everyone affected by this accident. It gave me chills when I heard of this, because I use to take the same train everyday when I lived in Maryland. That was always my fear, a collision of some sort. How sad.

We pay more and more for public transporation and more and more we hear about outdated and deficient vehicles.  Im not blaming the transit authorities but what are they to do.  More people movers are needed and what is out there is falling apart.  We dont want people to drive and we cant accommodate them on public transportation.  There is disaster built into that scenario right off the getgo.  It costs a lot to get from Point A to Point B now and, pretty soon, it will be cost prohibitive to even go to work.

It’s much safer to ride the Metro than drive your own car on  495, 395 and 66 where accidents are daily.
