Lisa Ling Begs North Korea to Set Journalist Sister Laura Ling and Euna Lee Free (Video)

Laura Ling and Euna Lee to go on trial for spying this week in North Korea; families publicly appeal for their release, saying the women are ‘very, very scared.’

The families of two American female journalists scheduled to go on trial in North Korea this week for spying are speaking out, saying their loved ones are in the middle of a nuclear standoff, and pleaded for their release.

"We are terrified and that’s why we are here," Lisa Ling, former co-host of "The View" and sister of Laura Ling, told the "Today Show" yesterday. "We don’t really know what to expect with this trial … They are very, very scared."

Laura Ling and Euna Lee — the mother of a four-year-old daughter, Hannah — were detained March 17 while they were filming a documentary on female refugees. The women work for Al Gore’s Current TV in California. North Korea claims they illegally entered the rogue country, and the two could face up to 15 years in one of the North’s notorious labor camps if convicted. Western officials have blasted Pyongyang’s detention of the two, saying the communist country is essentially using the women as pawns as it tests the limits of the international community’s patience with its nuclear program. Gore, among other high-profile U.S. officials, is working on their release. But contact with the women has been very limited; a Swedish ambassador has met with them twice.

One can only imagine what these detained journalists — and their families, for that matter — are going through, knowing very little about their fate. To be sure, it would be a new low if North Korea was, in fact, using these two women directly as some sort of leverage to get the international community off its case when it comes to how it used its nuclear material. Their families are desperate for it not to come to that.

"We don’t know the details of what happened on March 17, but if at any point the girls went into North Korea, then we apologize on their behalf," Lisa Ling said on CNN’s "Larry King Live" last night, directing her comments directly to the North Korean government. "They never intended to do so."

"We beg your government to allow (them) to come home."

OMG the north koreans STILL have Laura Ling?! I’d seen something on this awhile back but didn’t realize how serious it was. I’m so sorry for these ladies and their families.

I am really concerned for Laura and her friend now. Lisa did a story on this mans regime undercover. This is only payback for that.

I hope this outcome has the same as with the other Journalist who was held prisoner in Iran…they both are released and not tried.  Keep up your spirits gals!

I can bet they are scared and to possibly be used as pawns in a huge chess game has to make their families wonder if they will be able to get them home sooner rather than later.  Hope female journalists will stay out of the really dangerous areas as there seems to be a trend to arrest them for minor infringements to rattle sabers at the super powers.  Not worth it right now as it becomes an International incident rather than fact gathering for a story.

I’m so so sorry, this is an outrage.  Ironic, Lisa has made such an impact with her reporting on so many political abuses around the world. Abuses against women, etc.  I pray everyday for Lisa  and her family for a good and speedy end to this horror.

Sounds like they were speaking to N. Korea very clearly. I hope a lot is going on behind the scenes to resolve this.

I certainly hope that Ms. Ling and Ms. Lee are released unharmed.  But perhaps this should serve as a reminder to Americans and particularly women when you enter a foreign country who has hostile relations with America…that, Ding! perhaps you should presume you are at high risk and probably being watched.  I just had dinner with a friend, who was giving me her travel itinerary for the next three or 4 months…China, Thailand, and Mongolia. She and her daughter will be taking the train into Thailand from China.  But when I started to question whether it was a good idea, she waved me off. Americans stand out like the 800 lb gorilla in the room and given how Muslin terrorists would love to get their hands on a couple of Americans ..I find her lack of consciouness about possible risk factors odd to say the least. But she essentially told me she likes danger and risky countries.  I think that is romantic bull.  So, did I find it ironic last night, after watching Anthony Bourdain’s show on the Travel channel to find my self watching the Travel channel’s new show which  re-enacts  kidnapings of tourists that take place every day all over the world.  I think they cited ten kidnappings a day. This week’s re-enacted story happen to be about two young women from Britain who were on the last leg of a year of traveling. They arrived in India and seemedclueless about how they might be seen as women traveling alone in a poor country. One of the women wore a tank top again completely unaware as to what the Indian women were wearing (all covered up) or what might be correct for the culture. Trying to save money, they made no arrangements to be picked up at the airport or had any clear understanding of how tourists should behave or what precautions to take in India. So they land and go outside to a mass of people looking for transportation to their hotel. Male  non english speaking cabbies trying to vie for their dollar.  And some of these men were actually putting their hands on the women and touching them. The girls seem to have no idea that in middle eastern countries,  women walking around with bare arms, shoulders and chest might seem promiscuous. White women in a majority brown nation will grab even more attention. They met an english speaking cabbie and paid him to take them tour of the city.  He turned out to be part of a gang who kidnapped unsuspecting  tourists and the next thing they knew, they had been kidnapped. The ordeal was stunning as was the women’s absolute passive response to finding themselves kidnapped. They survived with their lives and virginity intact. The gang simply wanted to steal their money and use the women to transport goods. The show just reiterated what I have long believed. Many Americans live pretty cushy lives (compared to living in a third world country) rarely running into tragic circumstances.  So they often travel never giving a thought anything would happen to them.  It is both arrogant and simple minded that they do not see the world as as dangerous place.  For these young women, and the others I have read about in the last several years being grabbed in a foreign country and being held, their lives in the balance. I wonder did none of this occur to them? Are Americans ill prepared for the realities of being an American in the broader world today?

Shows that re-enact kidnappings are a scare tactic used by the media and governments and cause more to harm Americans’ global relationships than truly educate on the risks associated travelling anywhere, including within the United States.  I agree that understanding the countries, politics and culture are key to all Americans, not just those who travel abroad.  More Americans need to truly educate themselves on the rest of the world and not rely on media sound bites to drive their decisions. For example, if you rely on the media coverage, you might not travel to New Orleans the murder capital of the U.S.  New Orleans is a beautiful, historic city - populated with wonderful people of all walks of life.  Like going anywhere, one must be aware of their surroundings, their behavior, and act responsibly. If you get crazy drunk on Bourbon Street, staggering back to your hotel at 3am, starting a shouting match with a local and then get mugged - well, take some responsibility for why it happened.

I applaud your friend for travelling with her daughter and exploring other parts of the world.  She has shown her daughter different ways of life, different religions, different economic conditions.  If you act like the ugly American, expect to be treated like one.  If you act responsibly and respectfully, you may be surprised by the response you receive.

Victoria J, I hope you never find yourself in harms way, needing help, as our two fellow Americans do, right now.

Please read my above post, if you are inclined to try to help.

I read an article by an Obama supporter that said N. Koreas missle tests are a farce. Of course she believes these tests were scheduled while Bush was in office.

Obama is leaving for Europe tonight. While he’s in Saudi Arabia, why doesn’t he stop in Isreal? It would show the middle eat that we truly care about Isreal. Or does he? This is like a slap in their face. Their president was here, Obama should go there.

I want to go along with Obama, but he’s doing things that don’t make sense. The government owning an automobile company. Thats insane.

dick, if you were a Bush supporter… then I am heartened that you don’t understand what Obama is doing, because anyone who supported the Bush debacle doesn’t know what is best for this country.

Deb. You are right on target.

The conservative movement never learns and they have no understanding of rellationships with the rest of the world.  They have know idea what is in play or at stake.  No Apology is the new mantra.
