Liz Peek: Obama Deaf to Election Warning But May Get Bailed Out

As bad as the recent jobs report is, the president is likely to receive some good news over the next several months …

Bears, Bulls, Chickens and Pigs: wOw’s Wall Street Weekly with Liz Peek (Week of 11/2)

Editor’s Note: Liz Peek is a financial columnist.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the unemployment rate rose from 9.8% to 10.2% in October, the highest level since 1983. Job losses were primarily in construction, manufacturing and retail, and were worse than expected. This is not good news; the terrible job market clearly weighs on consumer sentiment and spending, slowing the recovery. The debilitating payroll cuts also produced some cranky voters this past Election Day.

All politics may be local, but it is hard not to read national significance into Tuesday’s election results. Voters rallied against high taxes and the worrisome economy, while in Virginia, disillusioned young and independent voters crossed the aisle yet again to elect a long-odds Republican.

Astonishingly, the Obama administration has chalked up this apparent warning shot to circumstances beyond their control. Neither tea parties nor sinking polls or, now, pointed election returns seem to have made the slightest dent in their enthusiasm for policies that the majority of Americans do not embrace. Speaker Nancy Pelosi could barely contain her glee that the Democrats had picked up an extra House seat in New York – all the better to ram health-care legislation through. Remember Obama’s words on the night he was elected? "I will listen to you, especially when we disagree."

Americans are genuinely concerned about their country’s fiscal prospects, and about Obama’s programs that will create even worse deficits down the road. Fundamentally, they are worried that a shrinking number of people are supporting a growing segment of the population. The jobs being "saved" or added currently are mainly government jobs; the private sector continues to lay off workers. Even a caveman (with all due respect) gets that this is an unworkable trend.

In 2007 economist Gary Shilling wrote that 52.6% of Americans received "significant income from government programs, up from 49.4% in 2000 and 28.3% in 1950." These figures included, for 2007, 19 million Americans on food stamps, 57 million receiving Social Security payments, over 4 million collecting income from the Veterans’ Administration and millions more employed by the government. For sure, the figure has risen in the past two years as increasing numbers have received unemployment assistance and as the government has propped up banks and autos.

At the same time, a growing number of Americans do not contribute to our tax roles. The Tax Foundation reports that about one-third of our population files returns but pays no taxes, up from 18% in the early 1980s, while another 20 million Americans do not file returns at all.

This is not about social justice. It’s about a shifting of the economic burden in a way that is unsustainable. As baby boomers approach retirement and begin to receive Social Security, the number of people paying in more than they are taking out is going to shrink yet again. Add to that inevitability the millions that will receive health care under the legislation working its way through Congress and it is no wonder that young voters shifted gears. They see the burden contained in the legislation that Democrats are so eager to adopt. It is worth noting that, in 1980, 55% of Americans were receiving government handouts – a level that ushered in the Reagan revolution.

You know…..I personally do not accept that this is Obama’s ‘fault’.  And if you would step away from Partisan Politics, you would ALSO know that this did not ‘begin’ with the Obama presidency.  When I first moved to where I am now, I called a man regarding a property he had for sale.  this man lived in the most expensive part of town, and coincidently, was one of the realtors that came to my home, when I was looking for a realtor to list my ‘paid for’ house, for sale.  He was shocked when he realized that I was the same person he bragged to, when I called him with interest in buying the property he had then…..

Want to know what Government money he got for that property he was trying to sell?  FREE money, from the government, for the following:  Windows, getting attached to the Electrical grid, Water lines that went to the building, FREE roof, traffic study, electrical wiring INSIDE the building , grading of the land surrounding the building, and property tax money for two years while the work was being done.  Of course, he has accountants and lawyers who know where the loop-holes are—he is one of the town ‘big guys’ —lots and lots of money….he could have afforded all this himself..after all, he was selling the property for profit, as that is what a realtor does….but instead, used GOVERNMENT money to pay for it!

Government money—the between the lines perks that are set up for special people, cost this country a WHOLE lot MORE per person, than some on the right side of the aisle would care to admit….

Obama was handed this crisis on a platter.  And anyone that cares to, can look at the charts, and read the data, from 1990 forward, to know that OBAMA was not the one who created this mess.  It took a long time, and a bunch of greedy people, who wrote their own ‘laws’, to do this.  Unfrotunately—-someone always needs someone to ‘blame’— especially when the obvious becomes obvious to the masses…..and ‘someone’ doesn;t want to take responsibility for their part…..At least Obama is taking responsibility—even if he did not create this mess!

"Obama was handed this crisis on a platter."

Indeed.  When B. Obama began campaigning, the economy was rocking along just fine… or so we though. It wouldn’t matter if John McCain was President.  This downward spiral has been a long time in the making.   Bush’s " passionate conservatism" is partly.. but not all… to blame.   He federalized education with the disaster known as " No Child Left Behind" which led to the biggest increase in education spending in history ( 58%).  Its biggest effect was driving certified teachers from the classroom.  It did absolutely nothing to advance school choice.  With the prescription drug benefit, he created the biggest new entitlement since the Great Society.  He also initiiated the first bailouts.  For what two wars have cost us, every American could have health care.  Now, it’s crunch time in Afghanistan.  What to do there in a responsible way that would not send more soldiers home flag draped?  The reality is we do not have reliable Afghan partners, NATO allies, domestic support, or national interest for long term nation building…. or money.  The recent tragedy at Ft. Hood also tells us just what price we are paying. It’s hard to think of any instance that our involvement in the Middle East has caused Americans to smile or nod in approval.

Agreed that we have no money to wage these two impossible wars. The two wars Bush began have led the US into the worst deficit in Americna history. One of them was on a false pretext (Iraq and its nonexistent connection to Osama bin Laden; then nonexistent weapons of mass destruction) and another is impossible to win. We should get out before these wars drive our national finances even further into a hole from which future generations will have to extricate us. I wonder where these tea party folks protesting government spending were when Bush announced these wars at the same time he cut taxes. He made no economic sense, yet people in his own party cheered him on and those who objected were denounced as traitors.

Hi PAtty, I happen to agree with you and your facts. The fanatic right wing nuts want to blame the Preseident for everything. It took years to make the mess this country is in, and Ronald Reagan was no small part of it. What really worries me is the Michelle Backmanns etc who met in Washington yesterday. I forget which U.S. Senator got up and quoted, what he thought was a preamble to the Constitution. The idiot was quoting the Declaration of Independence. How can we expect people such as these to help make laws for this country? And I wish everyone to go and find out which lawmakers are receiving money from Insurance lobbyists and special interests. As long as they allow businesses to outsource jobs, bank overseas, and line the pockets of politicians, no one President will be able to get this country moving. These are not vague conspiracy theories, these are cold hard facts. Today I was told President Obama should have known and then shared with us the true story about the Fort Hood Shooter. What universe do these people live in? Sorry, not going off, just tired of the side shows.

YUP!  And SIDE Shows they are!  I watch C-Span…both House and Senate..I think they need to check the water those hawkers are drinking!  And I spend time in perusing the OpenSecrets website as well….to see WHO gets the money from Insurance lobbies.  And then yesterday, the Bachman ‘rally’ was an embarassment—not because it happened—-but becasue Boehner, for example, an elected official, seems to spend more time dying his hair and getting a suntan, than he does acqauainting himself with the Consitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Preamble……all things he should know about, as those are what he is SUPPOSED to protect!  Yet he doesn;t now the difference between on and the other!  HECK!  I have a copy of all those things on my desk!!!!!!  I look at them ALL THE TIME!  I was required to learn and memeorize parts when in the 6th Grade!!!!!! And again in Jr. High, and again in High School!!!!

Those people in Congress should be REQUIRED to take a test, and pass it without cheating, on ALL THREE!!! BEFORE they are given the oath to take the office of ‘Legislator’…..let alone stand in front of a camera for the world to see what kind of idiots are elected to make the laws in this country!

Hi Patty, you make so much sense. Thank you. I grew uo in Philadelphia, and my cousin and I spent countless Saturdays in center city visiting historical sites. That was back when you could touch the Liberty Bell. it was still Indepedence Hall, You walked into this room, and saw desks with papers on them, Ben Franklin"s glasses on his and you felt like these men were just out to lunch and would return any minute. Betsey’s Ross small house, Franklin’s gravesite. The University of Pennsylvania Musueum and Hospital started by him. Part of the University still has buildings put up back then for students. I learned to love Phila and this country right there where it started. It gave me a love of history that I have til this day. I doubt many of our politicians could recite much of these world changing documents. I was 12, and am now 65, my daughters have the same feelings for this country, and I am very proud of that fact. If people would just read the biographies of these man, read what they thought this country could be, and read the sacrifices they made to bring this country about, maybe, they would stop the petty nonsense and start trying to practice what we so willingly preach to others countries.

Dear Helen- there was an excellent article in today’s New York Times about the lobbyists and "special interests" donating money to - guess who? - Nancy Pelosi. There is no "They" who are "allowing" businesses" to outsource: U.S. commerce would have taken an even greater plunge if our companies could not take advantage of low labor rates elsewhere. Our companies cannot possibly compete with others around the globe unless we have comparable costs of production. Thankfully there are other realms where we can compete- such as those reliant on intellectual capital. For example, software design and engineering. You cannot legislate against shifting "comparative advantage" - nor can you isolate the U.S, against international trade. Nor would you want to. Thanks for posting - Liz Peek

Liz, you are right as far as you will go. You are as biased as anyone else. Lobbyists and Insurance companies are spending record amounts of money on buying republican politicians to stop health reform, which will see their profits tighten up, at the least. How you as an American can justify American companies going overseas with their jobs is appalling even for a republican. Other realms? Yes for some, people who can afford college and not everyone wants to go to college. Some people have to go out and make a living. The country you are describing is definitely only for the wealthy. If you ever get your wish, I want to see how the fat cats survive without cab drivers, plumbers, roofers and cooks. As for International trade, yeah, China has done so well so far. Below standard products, oh, well they’re cheap. Liz, come out of New York, and see how most Americans live. Leave Washington and see how we live. You know, where the majority of Americans live on a salary of 50,000 or less a year. A large percentage of out of work Americans could be working today, if all the customer support jobs now in India and Manila were brought back. As for big business, how much profit is enough? Liz, nothing personal, but you are looking at some big picture that most American families today cannot even think about. Please come in for a landing, and visit some everyday families in everyday towns, the ones between N.Y. and Calif. Thanks for responding and your comments.

What about Clinton and Gore passing NAFTA?  Lots of jobs left because of that and it was supposed to help create jobs in Mexico so there would be less illegal immigration.  Those Mexican citizens were supposed to have a better chance for productive jobs in their country, but since then, illegal immigration has skyrocketed.  Clinton took a lot of money from foreign lobbyists to make those deals.

I have no love for either party, I am an Independent.  My contention has always been that until the way business is done in Washington there will be not real change.  President Obama had a wonderful chance at the beginning of the year to get something done that would really change America - reform and regulate the lobbyists.  NO MONEY FOR ANYTHING should be able to go from a special interest/lobby to a house representative, senator, cabinet member, any member of government and on and on.  Laws that they can meet with them, discuss industry issues, etc, but NO MONEY for lunches, trips, seats on private planes, fund raiser dinners, and on and on and etc.  WE the people would have backed him and cheered him on and changed the laws so he could go 3 terms (well maybe), because that would have been change we could believe in.  It would have been such a game changer and really changed the scope of what could get done.  He would have had a great win under his belt.  Or, if he had concentrated on propagating a better business environment with tax incentives to create new industry instead of more taxes, then he would have had such a great win - healthcare could have followed easily and maybe wouldn’t have gotten into such a fight and maybe all those involved could have worked together more.    I wonder what congress’ approval rating will be now?

As it stands, after Bush growing government so much, so many posts above this complain about it, now you want the Obama Administration to do the same thing?  To me it’s like hearing "the republicans got to make as many mistakes as they wanted, and take all that money and do what they wanted while growing government, now it our turn to make as many mistakes as we want and we don’t care who has to pay for it, just like the republicans didn’t care….fair is fair -  so back off because you are stupid since you are republicans, we are far smarter since we are democrats and we can do it better, we will grow government even bigger!!!!!!

Frannie I agree I do not want a bigger government either. I want what we have to work for us. But until Americans get involved and drive their representatives with phome calls and e-mails, that won’t happen. bwlieve me my local pols and my state senators know my name. I let them know how I feel and what I expect. 2 of my three daughters do the same. If we have the best government money can buy, they are going to earn it.

Helen,

Boy, you said it - "… the best government money can buy.."  LOL  I just wish the rest were true about them earning it.  LOL

Thanks Frannie, we have to make them earn it. Start caling your local congressmen and state senators and senators and the President in Washington. Not once, but whenever something moves you. One of my state reps now calls me by my first name in e-mails and we are not in the same party. He is a good man, though, and I cross party lines to vote for him. He has given me and my family help and guidance in the past knowing we do not agree with his party’s politics most of the time. I see him as a throw back to a time when politicians helped you not themselves. He is the type of pol I will back anytime. They are out there. Hope you can find one in your area.

Helen,

I do write them and call them all the time.  Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein never seem to have time for me and all I get back is a mass emailing - Ahh well.

It doesn’t matter, I write to whomever is important and I don’t stop.

Frannie Em,

When I read your post, I am reminded [allegorically] of several stories about individuals who purchase grand old historic mansions/buildings to renovate and rebuild to use as a private a residence, inn, or B&B [bed and breakfast].  In each circumstance the desire is to restore the property to its original splendor and grandeur, and to enjoy the esthetic quality and beauty of rennovated property.  Yet the challenge becomes daunting.   Because the older the property … the more damage, and consequently the more costly it is to rebuild.  Often, these bastions of far gone golden eras are decayed and rotted such that gutting is required to bring them back to life.  And, installation of new structural foundations, inside and out, are necessage to meet modern needs/specifications.  Worse of all, in some instances when the damage is too sever, the tough decision is made to demolish completely and rebuild anew.

Like the grand old mansions of a far gone era, our nation was built on a solid foundation - democratic ideals and individual freedom, spun from Judeo Christian ethics where hard work was rewarded in a system of sound capitalist principals to insure prosperity for any who sought it.  Yet, that foundation -the core of our government, like in the grand old mansions, has also deteriorated … battered by the consequences [and corruption] of time.  What happened?  Divisiveness seems to have borne a price tag for resurrection, which now seems unfathomable.

Frannie, you touched on a number of issues, which raises philosophical questions.  How do we rebuild our country embracing the stellar principles upon which it was founded?  How do we restore dignity to the moral of our people such that patriotism is [first and foremost] pride in our system of government, and also trust and confidence in our elected officials?  If ‘business as usual’ in Washington is the debris of a burgeoning inept system of government, which has rotted to its core … then how DO we stop it?

The most difficult question of all, is our ‘house’ repairable’?  Can we revive our country to a status of economic productivity that allows all citizens access to the elusive ‘pursuit of happiness’ in the manner our forefathers intended?  Or … is our system so flawed [at its foundation] that it will become irrepariably dismantled?  I shudder.  Do you?

Frannie Em,

Opps!  I meant to push PREVIEW to edit.  I rambled in the above post.

I wanted to say that like you, I’ve always belonged to the Independent Party because I hate labels, and I lean far right on many issue and far left on others.  Obama was not my first choice.  Yet, I made the decision to vote for Obama when McCain brought Palin on to the ticket.  Now, I simply want to support his presidency.  Yet,  I’m tired of partisan politics,  and I’m tired of the rhetoric, which nurtures divisiveness.  I’m tired of the political machine of lobbyists and special interests, which serve big business at the expense of American taxpayers.  In my rambled dialogue of my previous post, I only mean that I fear for our system of government and the demise of the ideologies that our founding fathers intended.  Because at the end of the day … I worry that our government has become tainted by a complex political structure, which is [in essence] capitulated into the hands of power brokers.
