Liz Peek: Obama Deaf to Election Warning But May Get Bailed Out

As bad as the recent jobs report is, the president is likely to receive some good news over the next several months …

Bears, Bulls, Chickens and Pigs: wOw’s Wall Street Weekly with Liz Peek (Week of 11/2)

Editor’s Note: Liz Peek is a financial columnist.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the unemployment rate rose from 9.8% to 10.2% in October, the highest level since 1983. Job losses were primarily in construction, manufacturing and retail, and were worse than expected. This is not good news; the terrible job market clearly weighs on consumer sentiment and spending, slowing the recovery. The debilitating payroll cuts also produced some cranky voters this past Election Day.

All politics may be local, but it is hard not to read national significance into Tuesday’s election results. Voters rallied against high taxes and the worrisome economy, while in Virginia, disillusioned young and independent voters crossed the aisle yet again to elect a long-odds Republican.

Astonishingly, the Obama administration has chalked up this apparent warning shot to circumstances beyond their control. Neither tea parties nor sinking polls or, now, pointed election returns seem to have made the slightest dent in their enthusiasm for policies that the majority of Americans do not embrace. Speaker Nancy Pelosi could barely contain her glee that the Democrats had picked up an extra House seat in New York – all the better to ram health-care legislation through. Remember Obama’s words on the night he was elected? "I will listen to you, especially when we disagree."

Americans are genuinely concerned about their country’s fiscal prospects, and about Obama’s programs that will create even worse deficits down the road. Fundamentally, they are worried that a shrinking number of people are supporting a growing segment of the population. The jobs being "saved" or added currently are mainly government jobs; the private sector continues to lay off workers. Even a caveman (with all due respect) gets that this is an unworkable trend.

In 2007 economist Gary Shilling wrote that 52.6% of Americans received "significant income from government programs, up from 49.4% in 2000 and 28.3% in 1950." These figures included, for 2007, 19 million Americans on food stamps, 57 million receiving Social Security payments, over 4 million collecting income from the Veterans’ Administration and millions more employed by the government. For sure, the figure has risen in the past two years as increasing numbers have received unemployment assistance and as the government has propped up banks and autos.

At the same time, a growing number of Americans do not contribute to our tax roles. The Tax Foundation reports that about one-third of our population files returns but pays no taxes, up from 18% in the early 1980s, while another 20 million Americans do not file returns at all.

This is not about social justice. It’s about a shifting of the economic burden in a way that is unsustainable. As baby boomers approach retirement and begin to receive Social Security, the number of people paying in more than they are taking out is going to shrink yet again. Add to that inevitability the millions that will receive health care under the legislation working its way through Congress and it is no wonder that young voters shifted gears. They see the burden contained in the legislation that Democrats are so eager to adopt. It is worth noting that, in 1980, 55% of Americans were receiving government handouts – a level that ushered in the Reagan revolution.

Some people like to have all the facts before they go into a dissertation about something that has just happened.  Maybe you would like something like Bush’s MISSION ACCOMPLISHED sign on the ship here in San Diego.  The mission was accomplished- Cheney and Halliburton had control of the OIL.  Our country will last and be stronger because of Obama.

Mary,

Do some research about that sign "Mission Accomplished"!  You will find that Bush had nothing to do with the sign and had no idea it was hung before he got there.  Obama will take our Country down as fast as his approval ratings are going down.  Keep your head buried.  It’s easier than facing the truth.

As Commander-in-Chief I don’t believe that he didn’t know about the sign.  It took several months for him to say anything about his lack of knowledge.  I stand by what I said.

My 401k is finally back to where it was before it took a nose dive last year! It bombed while Bush was in office and it recovered when Obama was in office.   So far, so good.

B Clark, it was going to recover on its own anyway.   We’ve had many recessions since 1948 and they always recover when not tampered with.   Your 401k would’ve come back sooner if Obama had not given the bailouts and the failed stimulus.     This isn’t about Obama being a hero.   He has done more damage long term to our country financially than any President before him.   He is in way over his head.

I don’t agree at all.  For me "Stay the course" is finally making sense.  Thanks for the slogan!

Mine might be as well…but unfortunately I had to liquidate mine to prop up my 20 year small business ( that is not to big to fail)  .

Here we are a year later unemployment worse than before and the "stimulus" ( ya right) bill that was suppose to jumpstart the economy has failed miserably.  ( course we told them that at the time but they succeeded in passing it anyway in the dark of the night with threats of keeping the unemployment from going over 8%.  go figure????

I BLAME this squarely on the Democratic Congress at the direction of Obama!!!!  He wanted the job selling the people a "bill of goods" ( boy does this party give new meaning to that phrase)  that he and his party could fix it!!!!  They have made it worse!!!

"Sherrie if Bush put us in such a financial debt in 8 years then why did it only take Obama 8 months to meet and exceed that?"

By C Hardy on 11/06/2009 1:55 pm

He hasn’t. I don’t know where you got that information but I could probably guess and be in the neighborhood.

What republicans still fail to take into account are the 10 billion per month they were spending on the war and never included in their budget figures. When you look at the "official" figures that are floating around out there for the Bush budget deficit those 10s of billions (make that hundreds of billions in reality) aren’t in many of them that come from right wing sources.

Sherrie no we dont fail to take that into consideration but Obama is President - he could stop the wars and bring our Troops home and stop spending that money each month BUT he hasnt.  Why?  What does he know that we dont that Bush knew all along and couldnt share……..ever stop to think about that?   Obama said he would listen to his generals in Afghanistan YET he isnt - he would bring our Troops home from Iraq, yet he hasnt - so when does Obama’s spending stop on these 2 wars?  He is President now - its his spending not Bush’s…Bush started it and Obama isnt stopping it…

Oh and your assumption is wrong - http://www.kxnet.com/custom404.asp?404;http://www.kxnet.com/News/Nation/419122.asp

C Hardy, he said he would start bringing troops home, according to a time line.  GWB said we would leave Iraq when asked; that has not happened.  I doubt it will.  We still have troops in Kosovo.   President Obama has military experts advising him, including Middle East experts.  From what I have read lately, those experts wanted to see the results of the Afghan election on Nov. 3.  We see now how that has played out.  Do we commit 40,000 more soldiers to a country with a very unstable and shady government?  The Marine Corp has said it cannot have soldiers ready until January.  The Army says they cannot deploy before December (still training).  Many soldiers are on deployment # 3 and # 4.  How much farther can we push them?  The general consensus seems to be that if we are going to support this new government in Afghanistan, we are commiting to at least 20 years.

This concerns me greatly, and I know it does you as well.  Not only are Iraq and Afghanistan bleeding us dry financially, it has taken a toll on marriages.  Children are growing up not knowing their mom or dad.  We are seeing more and more post war trauma among those who return.

The President has a tremendous monkey on his back with Afghanistan.  It seemes he will be damned if he does send those troops and damned if he doesn’t.  Stopping a war just isn’t that easy.  Also, the President cannot do that.  Only Congress can stop a war by refusing to fund it.  That almost happened shortly before the Normandy Invasion in 1944.  That Congress was weary of the public’s dark mood and also tired of war expenses….. just as we are tired now .

Sherrie, the war in Iraq has been validated by your emperor Obama to the world!   He said the war in Iraq made a difference.  So, if you don’t like the fact that we have helped a country at the expense of the taxpayers take your message to Obama.

You really need to look forward and stop looking over your shoulder.   You can’t do anything about the past.   Rest assured that millions of Americans are now looking towards the future because they can impact that.   The Tea parties, the rallies, the calls and the emails are shaking down this radical administration.   We want them gone in 2012 and we just might have our way.

Again, stay current and discuss today’s issues…if you think you can.

Yes, deber, the war in Iraq made a difference all right.   It cost the lives of thousands of Americans, caused hundreds of thousands of Ameircans to lose limbs and be otherwise handicapped, ruined thousands of marriages, put the country a trillion dollars in debt — and still Bin Laden is out there and the terrorists cause more grief every day.

Sara, as you know, unfortunately wars take lives.  We don’t have a draft system.   Americans go willingly to sign up to be a part of our military.

Indeed, Bin Laden is still out there (we think) and hopefully we will get him soon.   Ronald Reagan had to deal with Gaddafi and virtually put an end to his terrorist activity by bombing him.   It will be a wonderful day in America when we can flush out the terrorists both in the middle east and in the United States.

We most likely would not still be in the situation of hunting for Bin Laden if our leadership had kept the eyes where they belonged in Afghanistan not on a way to gain control of the OIL in IRAQ.

If our leadership would have kept his eyes off of Monica, we would have had Bin Laden!
