Liz Peek: Obama Deaf to Election Warning But May Get Bailed Out

As bad as the recent jobs report is, the president is likely to receive some good news over the next several months …

Bears, Bulls, Chickens and Pigs: wOw’s Wall Street Weekly with Liz Peek (Week of 11/2)

Editor’s Note: Liz Peek is a financial columnist.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the unemployment rate rose from 9.8% to 10.2% in October, the highest level since 1983. Job losses were primarily in construction, manufacturing and retail, and were worse than expected. This is not good news; the terrible job market clearly weighs on consumer sentiment and spending, slowing the recovery. The debilitating payroll cuts also produced some cranky voters this past Election Day.

All politics may be local, but it is hard not to read national significance into Tuesday’s election results. Voters rallied against high taxes and the worrisome economy, while in Virginia, disillusioned young and independent voters crossed the aisle yet again to elect a long-odds Republican.

Astonishingly, the Obama administration has chalked up this apparent warning shot to circumstances beyond their control. Neither tea parties nor sinking polls or, now, pointed election returns seem to have made the slightest dent in their enthusiasm for policies that the majority of Americans do not embrace. Speaker Nancy Pelosi could barely contain her glee that the Democrats had picked up an extra House seat in New York – all the better to ram health-care legislation through. Remember Obama’s words on the night he was elected? "I will listen to you, especially when we disagree."

Americans are genuinely concerned about their country’s fiscal prospects, and about Obama’s programs that will create even worse deficits down the road. Fundamentally, they are worried that a shrinking number of people are supporting a growing segment of the population. The jobs being "saved" or added currently are mainly government jobs; the private sector continues to lay off workers. Even a caveman (with all due respect) gets that this is an unworkable trend.

In 2007 economist Gary Shilling wrote that 52.6% of Americans received "significant income from government programs, up from 49.4% in 2000 and 28.3% in 1950." These figures included, for 2007, 19 million Americans on food stamps, 57 million receiving Social Security payments, over 4 million collecting income from the Veterans’ Administration and millions more employed by the government. For sure, the figure has risen in the past two years as increasing numbers have received unemployment assistance and as the government has propped up banks and autos.

At the same time, a growing number of Americans do not contribute to our tax roles. The Tax Foundation reports that about one-third of our population files returns but pays no taxes, up from 18% in the early 1980s, while another 20 million Americans do not file returns at all.

This is not about social justice. It’s about a shifting of the economic burden in a way that is unsustainable. As baby boomers approach retirement and begin to receive Social Security, the number of people paying in more than they are taking out is going to shrink yet again. Add to that inevitability the millions that will receive health care under the legislation working its way through Congress and it is no wonder that young voters shifted gears. They see the burden contained in the legislation that Democrats are so eager to adopt. It is worth noting that, in 1980, 55% of Americans were receiving government handouts – a level that ushered in the Reagan revolution.

Phyllis, the people who resort to this kind of thing, are the ones like Backmann who are in desperate need of nedication AND facts. I have great sympathy for Mr. Backmann and her family. Notice you never see them with her?

Nah Phyllis, that’s because she doesn’t have any facts to back her up.

The polls show otherwise and Obama is taking a dive. Those that voted for the man, can not accept that his policies are not working, nor do the American people approve of them.

What kind of American is horrified by a peaceful demonstration by the citizens of this county?

My guess is, those that are way too ego invested.

So, Phyllis, a peaceful gathering of Americans, exercising their First Amendment Rights is a “shameful, stupid and horrific???” So free assembly and the voicing of any Aerican’s differing opinion IS not permitted under an Obama Administration. Did you call the protesters who took to the Mall in DC under the Bush Administration “shameful, stupid and horrific?” Because in a free society you CANNOT have it both ways. How can you villify the Free Speech?

Mary,

Great question, I see no answer though?

That Republicans would rally around Bachman is very telling about that party’s leadership abilities.  Joe the Plumber would be a better spokesman.

Remember that Bachman was not too fond of John McCain. He is not my man,” she said. “Our candidate was chosen by the media. But there are other races out there.”

Her concerns about homosexuality…"Because our K-12 public school system, of which ninety per cent of all youth are in the public school system, they will be required to learn that homosexuality is normal, equal and perhaps you should try it. And that will occur immediately, that all schools will begin teaching homosexuality.” —

Her thoughts about "re-education camps"….."I believe that there is a very strong chance that we will see that young people will be put into mandatory service. And the real concerns is that there are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young people, where young people have to go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward and then they have to go to work in some of these politically correct forums."

There you have it.. the wisdom of the Republican Party.

Maggie, could you imagine the wisdom of the Republican Party with the ticket of Palin and Bachmann or Bachmann and Palin?

I would like to add Liz Cheney or Dana Parino to that list too!

Deber the only ones who are upset with Obama are the ones that don’t have any patience and expected miracles. I have NO buyer’s remorse over voting for Obama. We have lost confidence in him….I don’t think so. The Tea Baggers are republicans who didn’t vote for him anyway. BTW Obama left the details of the healthcare bill up the the Senate and Congress although he did tell them what he would like to see in the bill. Bush didn’t even understand his own bailout bill.

Sorry Laurel - you are wrong - of the 50 people who went to Washington in the past few days, from this area, were the following - 15 Democrats who voted for Obama - 20 Independents who voted for Obama - 10 Conservatives and 5 Republicans who didn’t vote for Obama.

A nice mixture.  Perhaps you should attend one of these rallies - you might find it interesting - especially among the Democrats and Independents!  No one expects miracles - everyone expects a President who is willing to listen to the people of this country - not ignore their wishes.

And, please, can we ever have a discussion with an Obama supporter who can utter a rebuttal without the name Bush being thrown in?  Guess you get that comeback from President Obama.

I have no intention of ever attending one of those tea bagger/birther ralllies. WOW 50 whole people!!! That’s not even 1 tenth of a percent of the total population of this country.  I think I’ll reserve judgement on Obama until he finishes his first term. Why should I leave Bush out of my argument no one on the right leaves him out. No I didn’t get that from Obama. I was saying Bush would destroy this country when the Supreme Court decided the election in 2000. Guess what I was RIGHT!!!! Once again WHERE WAS THE OUTRAGE WHEN BUSH WASN’T LISTENING TO THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY??? BTW I don’t find hate interesting at all. I happen to find it disgusting.

Actually, Laurel, you are wrong again.  Bush didn’t destroy this country.   What’s the matter….you don’t trust our Supreme Court to do the right thing?   Do you think they pulled a fast one on the country by doing the right thing in an unprecedented situation?

Try to look forward, Laurel, to the president you elected and what he hasn’t accomplished in his first year.   That’s an indicator of how the next three years are going to be.   If you keep looking over your shoulder you aren’t paying attention to how this president is spending us into the ground.

When, in less than 8 years, we went from being the most popular country to the most hated, that is destruction. We have only become loved by other countries again since Obama was elected. Despite what you think our popularity in the rest of the world matters. I don’t look over my shoulder, but I do remember and refer to our past. Those who forget their history are doomed to repeat it and I hate repetition. So Bush DID destroy us and Obama has saved us.

Actually Laurel your remark "Wow 50 whole people" — that was on one bus.  And remember one tenth multiplied by many tenths can turn around elections.  And, if I can be one of those people I’ll be proud to say so.  Don’t knock any of these people who took their time to voice their opinion.  Rather like this thread - there are people who are speaking up.  You might not like what we say but you must at least admire our right to do so.

Yeah, where was your outrage when Bush wasn’t listening to you.  Did you travel across the country and stand on the Capitol steps?  Did you voice your opinion?  I didn’t see any of those people at that time.  Or were you one of those people who burned the flag and hung the President in effigy?  I don’t find hate interesting either and believe me these people who are voicing their opinion aren’t voicing their hatred - they are voicing their right to speak - to disagree - I’m sorry you find it disgusting.

In the meantime, I will not be timid and squeamish about my outrage.  I am afraid of this adminstration.  They seem to feel that their actions are an experiment for this country.  And, Nancy Pelosi is the crazy Doctor Strangelove!

I do speak up when I don’t like something. Bush didn’t listen to anyone so what was the point. I didn’t vote for him in 2000 or 2004 so yes my voice was heard even if it didn’t matter. I would never burn a flag. My family has fought for, died for, and even governed this country. I don’t care if people voice their opinions, but I find comparing our president to Hitler and bin Laden vile and promoting hate. What really bothers me is being called ignorant for using logic and common sense in forming my opinion. I don’t have admire anyone’s right to do anything, I do respect the right but I don’t admire it. This country has been an experiment since the beginning so what is your point??? You don’t seem to understand that while I respect your right to say whatever assine thing you want, you and others on this site constantly bash me and insult my intelligence everytime I say something. Where is your respect for the people who tried to voice their opinions during the Bush years??? You do realize that Bush barred protesters from Government buildings and called us anti-American and unpatriotic.

Glenda, you have a way with words!!   It seems impossible for the democrats to actually detail what a fine job Obama is doing.   You never read anything about how proud they are of this wreckless spender.   They elected him to "fix" their country.   Instead they elected an inexperienced man who can’t stop looking over his shoulder.

I have to shake my head when I think about the deficit this man is going to leave the next incoming president.   I sure hope the next one  has a strong heart.
