Liz Peek: Obama Deaf to Election Warning But May Get Bailed Out

As bad as the recent jobs report is, the president is likely to receive some good news over the next several months …

Bears, Bulls, Chickens and Pigs: wOw’s Wall Street Weekly with Liz Peek (Week of 11/2)

Editor’s Note: Liz Peek is a financial columnist.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the unemployment rate rose from 9.8% to 10.2% in October, the highest level since 1983. Job losses were primarily in construction, manufacturing and retail, and were worse than expected. This is not good news; the terrible job market clearly weighs on consumer sentiment and spending, slowing the recovery. The debilitating payroll cuts also produced some cranky voters this past Election Day.

All politics may be local, but it is hard not to read national significance into Tuesday’s election results. Voters rallied against high taxes and the worrisome economy, while in Virginia, disillusioned young and independent voters crossed the aisle yet again to elect a long-odds Republican.

Astonishingly, the Obama administration has chalked up this apparent warning shot to circumstances beyond their control. Neither tea parties nor sinking polls or, now, pointed election returns seem to have made the slightest dent in their enthusiasm for policies that the majority of Americans do not embrace. Speaker Nancy Pelosi could barely contain her glee that the Democrats had picked up an extra House seat in New York – all the better to ram health-care legislation through. Remember Obama’s words on the night he was elected? "I will listen to you, especially when we disagree."

Americans are genuinely concerned about their country’s fiscal prospects, and about Obama’s programs that will create even worse deficits down the road. Fundamentally, they are worried that a shrinking number of people are supporting a growing segment of the population. The jobs being "saved" or added currently are mainly government jobs; the private sector continues to lay off workers. Even a caveman (with all due respect) gets that this is an unworkable trend.

In 2007 economist Gary Shilling wrote that 52.6% of Americans received "significant income from government programs, up from 49.4% in 2000 and 28.3% in 1950." These figures included, for 2007, 19 million Americans on food stamps, 57 million receiving Social Security payments, over 4 million collecting income from the Veterans’ Administration and millions more employed by the government. For sure, the figure has risen in the past two years as increasing numbers have received unemployment assistance and as the government has propped up banks and autos.

At the same time, a growing number of Americans do not contribute to our tax roles. The Tax Foundation reports that about one-third of our population files returns but pays no taxes, up from 18% in the early 1980s, while another 20 million Americans do not file returns at all.

This is not about social justice. It’s about a shifting of the economic burden in a way that is unsustainable. As baby boomers approach retirement and begin to receive Social Security, the number of people paying in more than they are taking out is going to shrink yet again. Add to that inevitability the millions that will receive health care under the legislation working its way through Congress and it is no wonder that young voters shifted gears. They see the burden contained in the legislation that Democrats are so eager to adopt. It is worth noting that, in 1980, 55% of Americans were receiving government handouts – a level that ushered in the Reagan revolution.

Actually, they ARE significant, especially in NJ, where Obama took time out of his "busy schedule" to back and basically campaign for John Corzine. He made appearance after appearance with him, while the country was wallowing in debt and unemployment. When do you recall any other President taking such an interest in local politics? And what about Obama’s slap in the face to David Paterson, the current Governor of NY, back in September? Obama knows he will not be re-elected, so he went out of his way (with the media in tow) and actually told him he shouldn’t run for office next year. Again, when has the President of the United States gone to such measures to ensure his own political survival?

Bottom line, Sara - these recent elections are proof of the American uprising against the Democratic reign. Andy by the way, I know people from the MidWest… your thinking is in the minority

Well, D L — if you "know" people from the MidWest — certainly that would make you an authority.

Just as you made yourself an authority on the nation re: the elections in Virginina and NJ

Well then, we agree on something — neither of us, or anyone else posting here — is an authority on the nation.

The president of the United States is not elected by direct popular vote but instead is elected by electoral votes. The total electoral votes per state is the total sum of U.S. Senators and Representatives. There are 538 electors; a candidate must received 270 electoral votes to win the Presidency.

New Jersey has 15 and Virginia has 13.  They are now republican states and no longer Obama’s states.

This is about 2012 and a win for the republicans.

Seriously, deber — last time I checked the constitution, the electoral votes went with the majority of votes in the state, regardless.    The more the right screams, stomps, and acts out — the more people who are turned off by them.   Geez, right now only 20% of votes even want to be associated with the Republican party.

I would LOVE to know how electing 2 republicans as GOVERNORS means a damn thing on a national level. Maybe they got elected cause the lies they told were better than the lies the dems told. Could it also be due to poor voter turnout??? If the majority of voters that day were republican and voted republican then the republican won. It means nothing in the grand scheme of things. Once again, there you go dividing us into red and blue. Aren’t you sick of partisan politics by now. It’s no wonder that nothing ever gets done. You don’t know how to compromise. Grow up and learn to share.

Deber, Just as it is pompous to think that those foolish Iowa caucuses are representative of the country at large. LOL!

Deber, It sure is. The hyterical, irrationality of some of these women is truly sad. How do people function in life without critical thinking skills or a lick of common sense? The list of who I ignore here grows weekly. I don’t have women like that in my every day life…I’m surrounded with women like you. Have a good week!

the real estate market is thriving because homes are in foreclosure. Northern VA is also close to D.C. so of course things are better there.

The real estate market is getting better, as it always has since 1948, due to many things, Laurel, and yes, foreclosures are one reason.  First time homebuyers because of the $8,000 credit are pushing it now.   Don’t forget that many Americans are taking advantage of the low appraisals for second homes, too.   The real estate market drives the economy….everything is tied to it.   When the values go up too quickly the market crashes to rebalance it, bring values back down, etc.   The recession was always going to correct itself however this administration took advantage of it to ram through 8 years of neglected special interest programs instead of reaching out to the small businesses that would’ve tightened the losses and kept Americans working.

Homebuyer’s credit was Obama. So you need to quit talking about how he hasn’t done anything. BTW He really can’t do anything when the republicans block everything because it wasn’t done their way. An economy can’t correct itself when it is built on shady derivatives and complicated paper deals. In the past we have recovered BECAUSE of what we made, but we don’t make anything anymore. That is why China has already recovered-they are making everything. We recovered from the depression because of WWII. How would you have kept americans working when no one was buying???
