Liz Smith on Obama's Dogfight

Liz Smith
We should keep supporting President Obama’s status in this dogfight (it’s not our country), and we should be encouraging to the people of Iran. Even Pat Buchanan, arch conservative, believes Obama’s position on Iran is the right one. What does the Conservative Right want? Another war for us with Iran or to worsen relations with a government and a people that may be softening up without the irritation of George Bush. Regardless of who, which side is in power in the near future in Iran, that is who Obama will have to deal and negotiate with. We should stand aside and let Iran speak for itself.

Kelly,

I definitely feel the protestors need arms.

I’ve always felt in the US that citizens should not be able to have such weapons - that they were only for police. My justification was always that people get hurt using them, kids get hurt…….  And we’ve already had our civil war, so what would I need a gun for, short of deterring a burglar in my home? That was my thinking.

But with what’s going on in Iran I’m seeing things in a different light now. What if, just what if, a bunch of terrorists hit on my neighborhood. Wouldn’t I want the protection of a gun? And the answer is yes. I might shoot myself in the foot, but yes, I would want to be able to defend myself,

Andrea…it is so hard to watch the pictures coming in of those people. I feel for them, unarmed with no way to protect their families. The students…hard to imagine. But one never knows what might happen.

Just wait until you see the whites of their eyes! ;]

I know. Did you see the photo of Neda that was taken after she was killed? Breaks my heart.

They had a large rally in Irvine, CA, and in Westwood, CA. Both cities are home to University of CA campuses and a  large international population. Many non-Iranians protesting side by side.

When I think of the power that the Iranian government wields - it’s horrible.

Hello Andrea, I appreciate your thoughts on this subject.

I have posted this link in another thread, but it does present an interesting perspective on the gun issue so I want to post it again here as food for thought.  Suzanna Hupp speaks from experience and makes a thoughtful and compelling case for gun ownership.  (I join Ms. Hupp as a citizen who is adamant about our right to bear arms.)

When I hear the "get rid of all guns" arguments, I remember what my hubby always used to say:  "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns."  Now THERE’S a scary truth!

Countrywoman,

Thanks so much for the link, which I will be viewing shortly.

I must admit that CA has tried to get people to turn in guns in an effort to get the guns off the street. From what little I know, the gangs still have theirs. So your husband was right.

Liz I’m a concervative and I do not want us to go to war or involve ourself with Iran and their politics.  Obama will have to deal  with whoever is in power and we can only pray that things get better for them.  We have enough problems on the homefront.

Please write in small caps. It is better to read. Furthermore it sounds like you are yelling. I am sure you have some good points, but the upper case is a making it difficult for me to read your post.

I agree the caps make it very difficult to read.  I am sorry for your and your husband’s ills and I do wonder how illegal aliens are able to collect foodstamps, medicare, and medicaid.  I can’t help but think, however, that any couple who goes ahead and has 6 children should be prepared to feed, clothe, educate, and nurture them. Without being disrespectful, could I ask you if you are or were employed?

Illegal aliens have frequently obtained federal aid in the US by way of buying forged legal documents.

I’ll have to say that I don’t recall ever having agreed with any of Pat Buchanan’s opinions, but I think he was right to say that President Obama’s positon on Iran is the correct one.

It may take years for Iranian citizens to realize the changes they seek. Our country ‘s leaders must find ways to deal with the leaders of Iran, no matter who they are.

It’s going to require extraordinary diplomatic expertise to balance our response to the unacceptable behavior of the leaders of Iran with our desire to support the Iranian people who are protesting for change.

He goes to Egypt and holds out uses his orating skill to give the oppressed people in Iran hope and when all heck has broken lose he cannot even call for calm in that country? He is no Regan that’s for sure and continues to weaken America around the world.

Reagans legacy is a myth not the reality. President Obama is President Obama he doesn’t need to be anyone else.
