Liz Smith on Obama's Dogfight
In response to: What should the U.S. do IF the Iranian election was not honest? And if it was, did the outcome set us back?
We should keep supporting President Obama’s status in this dogfight (it’s not our country), and we should be encouraging to the people of Iran. Even Pat Buchanan, arch conservative, believes Obama’s position on Iran is the right one. What does the Conservative Right want? Another war for us with Iran or to worsen relations with a government and a people that may be softening up without the irritation of George Bush. Regardless of who, which side is in power in the near future in Iran, that is who Obama will have to deal and negotiate with. We should stand aside and let Iran speak for itself.

DOGFIGHT has been the term for airplanes fighting in war time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_fights
Everybody gets so serious & touchy that they seem off the wall. Not a good way to go in a discussion. I, too, agree with Liz’s opinion on President Obama’s status in this matter.
A few theories on why Obama looks the other way:
"America is or has been evil, so it should do little or nothing in the world. This is a plausible theory that takes into account Obama’s friendship with Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers and his distressing tendency to apologize whenever he stands in front of a foreign audience. It may well be that Obama’s preferred version of America’s role in the world is one of sheer paralysis: inaction masquerading as virtue.
Obama has no idea what to do about Iran, and he knows it. Our President has always resembled Chance the gardener in Being There. It is easy to imagine that he is acutely aware that a few short years ago he was a State Senator in Illinois and that he is utterly unqualified to deal with matters as weighty as what is now transpiring in Iran. On this theory, his silence manifests an appropriate modesty. The problem with this hypothesis is that Obama has never exhibited modesty in any other context and, frankly, seems immune to the sentiment.
Obama is bold when it comes to domestic policy but considers anything that happens in a foreign country an unwelcome distraction. I think there is a lot of truth to this one. Obama is sort of the anti-Nixon. Nixon viewed the Presidency somewhat like a Risk player—the whole point was to manage his country’s foreign interests. Domestic policy—who cares? Install wage and price controls, establish affirmative action and the EPA, whatever. Obama is the opposite. We now know that he has an extraordinarily ambitious domestic agenda and wants to turn the U.S. into a European-type social democracy, or worse. On this theory, his incessant apologies for everything from treatment of the Indians to Guantanamo Bay are intended to buy time on the international front while he tends to business here at home. So the last thing he wants is a foreign crisis of any sort."
deber,
I disagree with you. First, the opposition has not asked for our help. Yesterday, there was some inflammatory rhetoric about the US — principally to provoke us — and I think Obama is correct to not respond and make the US the distraction. The United States should avoid giving the current regime any ammunition to use against the United States, including blaming us for the protests and unrest. The US can’t afford to be a paper tiger — if we are going to get out there and encourage the opposition we have to be prepared to support them with our military — well beyond words of encouragement. We don’t want to take the wind out of the sails of the opposition.
Hi Lucinda, I disagree with that post as well. (Actually it is a cut and paste and there is additional "information" in the source if anyone is interested:

Yes Deber…and so much more…Obama still hasn’t found a church in Washington. He presented himself as a Christian…just to garner votes and hide his rejection of a theistic God.
Not only does this President believe in the teachings of John Dewey, which places the belief in science above a theistic God for the human good…he is a stauch supporter of the radical teachings of Wright, Ayer and Alinsky.
Iranians are controlled, and Obama is pushing to control us. Left to do his will, his elitists beliefs will enslave us all.
And A Amedee…bless your heart too!
Read my post again…I do not say that we should "do" anything "about Iran". I said that Obama should have given a statement of moral support for the protestors. Which, at this late date…he has now done.
Iran is most certainly our business. I never said to "interfere". A regime change is important to the world, and to us, specifically considering their Nuclear aspirations and extreme religious beliefs.
To say that it is "none of our business" is worse than naive, and fortunately, their are other countries that understand these implications.
Relationship with Iran? Are you kidding me….what relationship?
Of course the ruling government does not trust, respect, or care in any way for America. However, there are young, educated citizens there that are becoming more democratic and desire a change. Those are the people that a statement of moral support is important to. They do not want for America do any more than recognize their right to their vote…for whatever and whoever they choose to vote for.
Obama has finally been shamed into making a statement by the Congress and his own Sec. of State.
Iran is a dangerous and lethal regime for Americans and Israel. As it is, those in power wish to wipe us off of the face of the earth.
A change of regime, towards a more democratic and less extremist rule would be our only hope for diplomacy or relationship with Iran and the Iranian people that are under their rule and persecution.
I agree with most of what you are saying A Amedee…Iran as it is, is controlled by extremists. However, for the 30% of the population that is under the age of 20, of which 20%-30% are unemployed, change is coming. They will have to make it happen, of course.
I feel for the young, the educated, that wish for another way of life. However, until that change can occur, Iran is an eminent threat to America and Israel.
I haven’t heard anyone speak of aggression…but a strong defensive posture is a must for America. As Reagan knew to be true; Peace through strength.
Ahmadinejad is a follower of the Ahmadiyya movement and a believer of the 12th Imam. He is an Amadis…his name, Ahmadinejed is no coincidence. It is not a question of trust, it is a belief of his religion that the Big Satan, America…and the Small Satan, Isreal…must be destroyed before the final prophet can return.
Ahmadinejad believes that by destroying America, he is clearing the way for the return of the Mahdi, the 12th Imam.
Not good and not open for discussion.
Canuck…he is still deceiving….he was not at Wright’s church to worship Christ…that’s for sure. He was there for the anti-American, anti-white rhetoric.
Have you had a look into the teachings and beliefs of Dewey? He was a progessive that rejected the belief in a theistic God and believed that science was responsible for furthering the human good. "Restoring science to her rightful place". Obama’s children attended a school based on the founding values of Dewey. They live by them.
Michelle is set to start some schools based on that same model…you watch…
One thought of Dewey’s that I found especially interesting is that "the truth is mutable"… so for those that ask just how Obama can lie and get away with it…..he doesn’t see it as lying, but just a "mutating truth".
John Dewey…look into his teachings…and you will know all about the Obamas that you need to know. For them, the ends DO justify the means.
And that end is socialism and the redistribution of wealth without God.
