Liz Smith on Obama's Dogfight

Liz Smith
We should keep supporting President Obama’s status in this dogfight (it’s not our country), and we should be encouraging to the people of Iran. Even Pat Buchanan, arch conservative, believes Obama’s position on Iran is the right one. What does the Conservative Right want? Another war for us with Iran or to worsen relations with a government and a people that may be softening up without the irritation of George Bush. Regardless of who, which side is in power in the near future in Iran, that is who Obama will have to deal and negotiate with. We should stand aside and let Iran speak for itself.

Next time someone accused President Obama of putting the America in danger, I will remember you said that. Free speech does not apply to politics and certainly not that culture. If you understand some of these other cultures you might think twice. It is not our problem. Surely we should not stand by an watch people get killed by a dictatorship style government in Iran, but the population of Iran is highly educated and I have no doubt they will come to a solution on their own.

All I can say is that I wish you had watched the Sunday political news.   When I said "freedom of speech" I was referring to the people in Iran.   America believes in freedom of speech for all people.

Obama, yesterday, made a statement to Iran.  You can easily research what he said yesterday.

I will do that! I just think this is a delicate situation and we should be careful how we approach it. I personally don’t want our troops to be involve in another war. They are already too tired from fighting other wars year after year. To think of the possibility of sending more Troops to Iran to keep the Peace is frightening. Why is this part of the world so violent?

A Amedee, my sentiments exactly.   We do not need to be in another war!  The Middle East is unsettled because of residual tensions from the colonial era and artificial state boundaries created by western powers in regions that were defined by tribal loyalties.   Added to that are tensions created by Shia and Sunni, and huge wealth disparaties caused by OIL.

One thing is clear….if the protestors had weapons, they would not be getting killed in the streets by those with guns, while they were throwing rocks…

Americans beware….there for the grace of GOD go you…..

I call it as I see it. I try to stay away from clever and coy comments.

If I had access to pitchforks, I would send them all to the Iranians that are protesting for their personal rights and very lives. However, guns would be more effective.

Americans, let this be a lesson to you; disarm the citizens and you have total control.

Absolute rubbish. If the people in the streets had weapons the Iranian military would be out in full force and kill them all.

DeBurca…that mindset is rubbish. Had the people been armed to begin with, that government would have had second thought about ignoring their protests.

Government is at it best when the government fears the people, not the other way around. FACT.

If you think a bunch of 20-somethings with guns wouldn’t be wiped out by the Iranian military even quicker than a bunch of rednecks protesting in the US gov’t with guns would be wiped out by the National Guard, your mindset is in a fantasy world.

You know DeBurca….youth, or rednecks, elderly or handicapped…an armed population is taken more seriously than one that must be disarmed.

You may like to imagine that it is a fantasy world, but other would call it a fact of history. One of which, our Nation has been a part of.

An armed population encourages anarchy in a nation of laws. And an armed protest is an insurgency and cannot be tolerated by any government. Whether they are Iranians or Americans who are armed they are no match for a military and would be seen as a national security threat and would be dealt with as such. And if you think that that protest would not have been squelched immediately by the Iranian government if they were firing guns at police, you’re listening to the wrong propaganda.

It absolutely does not DeBurca….an armed populace is much harder to suppress and taken more seriously. When that Nation of laws becomes unjust to the people, they have a right to fight tyranny and oppression. Just like America did. And would do again.

Who ever said that the Iranians shoudl be firing guns at the police? No one. But when the government start shooting unarmed citizens dead in the streets, they have every right to defend themselves and their families.

When the citizens are armed, the government thinks twice before shooting them dead in the streets.

Are you kidding? This isn’t 1776. The military, the national guard, even a well armed police force are not going to put up with a bunch of armed, anarchist citizens shooting at them or at anyone else.

And who do you THINK the Iranians would shoot at if not the police?

Kelly, do you think WE ‘have the right’ to go into our streets and protest our government armed with weapons? We don’t. We can protest peacefully, that’s it. And do you think the Iranians are any more free than we are to do it? Nonsense. If the Iranian people were armed and in the streets shooting at the police, they would be killed and the protest would be over.

Maybe this will help you understand… can you imagine if all those people protesting in the streets when GW Bush was handed the 2000 election by the Supreme Court had been armed? What exactly do you think would have happened to them and their protest? They would have felt as justified as the Iranians do to protest.
