I did miss that tidbit of "news".
Word to the wise women of the world - unless you are a flirtatacious hottie or there exists an at least imaginary potential for extracurricular "activities" the boys at work don’t want to play sports with you. It isn’t fair, it does suck but that’s the way it is. Your choices are to get over it and get out of the way, somehow use it to your advantage or to become a source of irritation for the guys. God forbid you should actually get an invite and prove to be a better player than ony one of the males.
BALLS & BABES
Karen: What’s this I hear about Obama’s not having any females playing in his basketball games?
Leslie: Huh?
K: Jeez––––aren’t you news savvy?
L: Don’t you dare be condescending to me, missy, I think I know a hell of a lot more than you do about what’s going on in this world!
K: Well, excuse me! I just meant that this seems to be a big deal.
L: To whom, pray tell?
K: The person that wrote it up in the Washington Post. It’s supposed to be a slap down on how Obama views women.
L: Are you kidding me? The poor guy can’t have a game of basketball without considering whether women should be on his team?
K: Yeah, I guess.
L: If there are women in his administration that want to play ball then get the hell together and play your own damn game.
K: You don’t have to get so angry––I was just reporting.
L: I need another glass of wine––to go with my whine, and by god, if I hear one more thing about what Obama should do, shouldn’t do, has done and shouldn’t have, will do and better not do, I am going to march down to the White House, go right into the oval office and present this President with the best basketball I can buy and say, "Mr. President, do whatever the hell you want cuz the ball is in your court!"
Hmmm. Not so sure. Does he play pick up with his daughters?
My daughter plays ice hockey and, let me tell you, there’s a deep sexism that appears when girls start playing "boys" sports. And it’s not just from men. I’m not saying it’s a big deal, but Obama not playing with girls who are good enough is a deal. Even my daughter’s hockey coach would tell you that.
Liza, I knew what you meant immediately.
As I recall, the guys he played with were an established group that played together somewhat regularly. Obama did not pick and choose who was in the group, and I do not recall anyone commenting on the political makeup of the group.
Shortly after, he played golf with Melody Barnes, his chief domestic policy adviser.
This struck me as the more sexist event because this was when he considered appearances of gender bias and making a statement. For the basketball game, he was just a +1 to someone else’s group. Given the composition of Congress, I imagine he would be hard-pressed to find any women there who regularly played basketball - and is that how we want him to spend his time?
