Margaret Hamburg to Head FDA

The Obama administration won’t comment, but news reports claim that Margaret A. Hamburg has been picked to head the Food and Drug Administration.
Hamburg, New York City’s former health commissioner (1991 to 1997), will face quite the task when asked to clean up the $2 billion agency. The FDA has failed in recent months to prevent a salmonella outbreak among peanut products and to properly monitor products coming in from abroad. Hamburg had no comment on her potential nomination, which would be subject to Congressional approval.
After leaving her commissioner post, reports The Washington Post, Hamburg headed to the Nuclear Threat Initiative, where she was vice president. She’s the daughter of two doctors — and, in fact, her mother, Beatrix, was the first African American woman to graduate from Vassar College.
