Margo Howard, Ann Coulter Miraculously Agree: Palin Too Big for Alaska
Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the
family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as
Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature
provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Margo’s advice column, Dear Margo, appears twice a week — on Thursdays and Fridays — on wowOwow.com.
To slightly skew an e-mail that was going around a few weeks ago, let me just say that friends said the day I agreed with Ann Coulter pigs would fly. Well, swine flu … and I now find myself in agreement with Coulter. [Click here for Coulter’s post.] Sarah Palin is too big for Alaska. And you know why? She signed a book deal – reportedly for somewhere between $7,000,000 and $11,000,000. In April. I do not know how I missed this news, but I did. Maybe you did, too. In any case, no one is particularly tying this news to her resignation. I mean, wouldn’t you rather earn X millions of dollars than $175,000? The haste with which she made her announcement, however, does nothing to disabuse me of the idea that she and the Mr. might be in some legal trouble.
I think quitting for a big-bucks book deal shows a real lack of character, but a great deal of opportunism. The citizens of Alaska elected her to a term of office and she is skipping out because … well, she is too big for Alaska. People who are lame ducks seldom deal with their duckhood by resigning, so let’s scratch that one.
I do disagree with Coulter (my usual stance) on one point she makes in her post. She writes, "I thought her press conference explained it very clearly – though she couldn’t put it precisely this way without sounding vain, but it’s obvious." She "explained it clearly"? That, my dear, is a stretch. If she had explained it clearly the news outlets and the blogosphere would not be talking about how it could barely qualify as English.

‘Let’s go quit!’ That was CNN’s Candy Crowley Friday night, imagining the decision process that led to Sarah Palin’s resignation, so spontaneous and unplanned did it seem. Nutty, too. It sounded like Richard Nixon if, heading into his Checkers Speech, he’d first taken the edge off by mixing Benzedrex inhalers into his rum and Cokes, the ones Dick Tuck had laced with pure Sandoz LSD, and then Nixon had gone on camera and wrestled an imaginary bear that turned into a black Satan and he’s going to keep that precious baby, no matter what anybody says, even the NBA coaches. That kind of nutty.Click here for the rest of Jim’s blog.

Maggie: …everytime his name is mentioned.
Fair enough.
Ah Margo..Margo…Margo…stop it now…not pretty, nope…not pretty at all.
Someone who grew up with the advice of Ann Landers should beware of using disparaging terms like "knocked up" when attempting to reconcile ones own success in the comparison.
So…its the book deal, eh Margo? Let’s see now…Palin is making money while writing a book. Just the thing that so many writers of articles and columns would like to do as well. Yep…kinda nice…being offer big money for your written words.
Palin will turn lemons into lemonade no matter what is handed to her. So, good for her. She out smarted those that hoped to battle her into submission and is now looking forward to more freedoms to advance her beliefs.
Wowowow! That’s great! And just what sooooooo many others wish that they could do.
Jealously is just so unattractive….
Sharon,
"Stop swimming in the gutter" LOL LOL LOL Excellent post!!!!!
Well Margo…no, I decide to not "trust" what you put forth here. We will see just which book outsells the other…that is what I will place my trust in.
..but no…I feel jealously is an issue here.
Sorry to hear that your mother used such base and disparaging language around you, in regard to other women. Plain spoken is one thing, and saying that a young woman was "knocked up" is not that. You know better and the sad fact of the matter is…Palin pulled your string and you reacted poorly.
So, instead of atte, pting to justify something that is blantatly indefensible…I suggest that you take a cue from Mrs. Palin and advance in another direction….
"We will see just which book outsells the other…that is what I will place my trust in"……interesting statement. Are you saying then that quantity of sales equals highest of quality? You would base your opinion on "which book outsells the other" rather than reading both for yourself and then deciding?)
Also, I agree that "Knocked Up" is far from degrading, especially since it is an incredibly accurate description: lack of education of birth control would most definitely define ones own irresponsiblilty, and gain one the title of ‘getting knocked up’.
As one writer stated in this comments section….CATTY is also a very accurate word. It would seem that if one does not appear to agree with another, the attacks come flying out like a gun from a holster. lol Talk about base and disparaging!
Welll Debbie …I am indeed talking about base and disparaging…Margo’s comment was all of that. I never said that I would not read the books for myself, so you have missed the point. But that is no surprise…now is it?
Being on the Best Sellers list is definetly a way that many decide what is a successful book. Surely that is not a news flash for you Debbie? So…I will await the sales and wish Palin the very best.
I agree, Margo’s ugly and unnecessary comment was catty and shed a light on her seamier side. I was disappointed that she could be so shaken by Palin, that she would resort to a less than stellar commentary. Margo’s loss of self control was surprising really….
After watching Palin meandering and rambling through a speed high cranking out infantile disconnected thoughts, I have come to the conclusion that she’s more than loopy and lacks a considerable amount of self control. I didn’t thinl Margo was ugly or catty. I don’t know about Texas, but here in New York Palin appears a self serving deluded nut job. Her book? She’ll be controlled by the editors, and the press roll out and TV interviews will put Palin on the best seller list.
Alaska? She’s doing them a favor by leaving. She’s cost them millions and egomania has taken up most of her time. Expect another scandal that will somewhat explain her bizarre behavior.
