Margo Howard: The Origins of Obama Rage?

Our Dear Margo shares what she fears to be the truth behind the growing dissent for President Barack Obama and his policies.
Margo Howard

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Margo’s advice column, Dear Margo, appears twice a week — on Thursdays and Fridays — on wowOwow.com.

I wrote this a few days ago, but with my editor decided it might be too incendiary. After former President Carter’s interview, however, I decided to join the still-thin chorus expressing this viewpoint. I think Obama and his supporters have been too willing to turn the other cheek – an admirable impulse in normal times. But when the debate becomes as coarse as it has, rebuttal is needed.

I find what is abroad in the land, as Henry James would have said, simply repellent — forget frightening. An elected official hollers out "You lie!" during a presidential address, yahoos are wearing firearms wherever they go, even at events where the president is, not to mention bars … certainly a great place to have a drunk with a  pistol. The desperate lunatic fringe, with some help from the Fox guys, have people (well, OK, the gullible, dim ones) believing that old age is reason enough for execution, Obama was born in Kenya, dissenters will be locked up á la the Nazis and the true mission of this administration is to turn us into a Socialist — if not a Communist — country. Even a true-blue conservative author and speechwriter for George W. Bush, David Frum, is concerned about "the wild accusations and paranoid delusions from the fever swamps." The Los Angeles Times called the increasing number of head case Republicans "the party of the paranoid."

Maureen Dowd wrote what I had been thinking: All this insanity is simply the bigots acting out. I am afraid it may really be true that the loudest naysayers cannot stand it that we have a black president. In what psychiatrists would call "displacement," the anger of some at having an African-American leader has been dolled up with scare tactic complaints and projections. They just can’t live with it, so they’re trying to upend it. Divide and conquer. Read it and weep.

Of course this is racism in one of its ugliest forms trying to disguise itself as Patriotism.  And what is the cause of racism?  Poor education, long time family beliefs, the need to feel superior to someone, anyone?  Certainly these are valid.  I believe the biggest cause of racism is…fear.  Think about it.  The people that shout down marriage equality, revile the President and accuse him of falsifying documents, and spead the lies that "death squads" will come from a universal health care system;  they are all afraid.  Afraid of something they don’t understand or have the education skills to try and comprehend.  Anger is a secondary emotion frequently used to mask the real emotion which is fear.  These people have scared themselves to death and I think it is only a matter of time until violence erupts.  What’s the solution?  I don’t have one.  Thoughts?

Agreed—It’s undereducated ill-informed, mis-informed people who can’t abide a black man in the white house.  Who listen to rabble-rousers like Glen Beck and Limbaugh and think they speak for them. And do not realize that the Becks of this world are laughing at them all the way to the bank.

Sorry, F P, but you won’t hear anyone encouraging racism on FOX News.   Just doesn’t happen.   The democrats are using "racism" each and every time our black President is criticized.   What this will do in the future will keep another black president from being elected because the American people are forbidden to "question" the policies of a black president but wow they sure can rip a white president to shreds if they don’t agree with his policies.    Just not Obama because he is black.   I don’t think this country will  see another black President in the White House for this reason alone.

America has learned a huge lesson in just 8 months.

If race isnt a concern…. why do you refer to President Obama as "our black President" How many times did you refer to president Bush as our white president?

Im not saying that you are a racist…. but why point out the color of his skin? Do you think we dont realize it?

One other think…… you dont think that another black person wont be President because the right has been complaining about President Obama for 8 months? That is absurd even for you.

Roger,

I wonder if people ever remember that Obama is also half white.

The divious ways people try to hide their racism is ridiculous……..it shows through loud and clear.

And that his "white" half roots can be traced back in America to before the American Revolution… longer than my roots.

Ann if that is the case why did he run using First African American?  Why didnt he connect more with his "white" roots?  Was he not proud of them?

Cause the truth being told in America when you’re mixed they make you pick a side even from birth. People will ask you what you are and most people will just classify you as black if your features fit the bill

Allen that is my point - why did he have to do that?  I have friends that are bi-racial or have friends whose kids are and they struggle w/ that everyday.  I just dont get it - why as a society do we make them choose, why can’t they have the best of both "worlds"?

He should be seeing as he only met his Father 2 times and his white mother and grandparent brought him up and supported him.

Dona, you mean like the people on this site.

www.theobamaforum.com

Deber B -    "black president",  " white president".   "Just not Obama because he is black.   I don’t think this country will  see another black President in the White House for this reason alone."

Deber - interesting labeling.  Do you label all your friends this way?  Do you divide your life this way?

PS.  Obama is 1/2 white - 1/2 black……..Recommended label:  "gray President"  (equal combination of blank & white.)

Suzanne I’ll ask you also - yes Obama is 1/2 white so why did he run as the first African American President?  Why didnt he touch more on his white roots or white side?  Maybe you should send your recommendation to Obama on how he should label himself.  He is President maybe he can get the laws changed…

Because he is black C Hardy. a person that is 1/2 black and 1/2 white is still considered black. There was even the "one drop rule" that helped to segregate people during the Jim Crow era. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-drop_rule

The best way to handle all of this would be to stop labeling people.

For all of those racists out there….. maybe you should do a little research in your family tree…. you might have that "one drop" which would make you black also.

Hey Roger - I knew about the "one drop rule" but my question is this - if he is 1/2 white and that side of his family raised him - why didnt he use that more?  He may have gotten more votes…I mean he ran as African American on purpose - I know that according to that "one drop rule" he is African American but for me - I would have liked to have seen more reference to his "other side".

Yes labels need to be dropped - my child is mixed with so much - she is pure bred mutt! LOL  How do you put that on the forms?

"For all of those racists out there….. maybe you should do a little research in your family tree…. you might have that "one drop" which would make you black also. "  That can be said of Black Americans as well…I had an ex boyfriend who was Black American and was very proud (which he should have been) but he was light skinned with green eyes and swore to me, swore to me there was no white in his family, so I asked his Mother and she had to set him straight…he was neve the same after that.
