Margo Howard: The Origins of Obama Rage?

Our Dear Margo shares what she fears to be the truth behind the growing dissent for President Barack Obama and his policies.
Margo Howard

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Margo’s advice column, Dear Margo, appears twice a week — on Thursdays and Fridays — on wowOwow.com.

I wrote this a few days ago, but with my editor decided it might be too incendiary. After former President Carter’s interview, however, I decided to join the still-thin chorus expressing this viewpoint. I think Obama and his supporters have been too willing to turn the other cheek – an admirable impulse in normal times. But when the debate becomes as coarse as it has, rebuttal is needed.

I find what is abroad in the land, as Henry James would have said, simply repellent — forget frightening. An elected official hollers out "You lie!" during a presidential address, yahoos are wearing firearms wherever they go, even at events where the president is, not to mention bars … certainly a great place to have a drunk with a  pistol. The desperate lunatic fringe, with some help from the Fox guys, have people (well, OK, the gullible, dim ones) believing that old age is reason enough for execution, Obama was born in Kenya, dissenters will be locked up á la the Nazis and the true mission of this administration is to turn us into a Socialist — if not a Communist — country. Even a true-blue conservative author and speechwriter for George W. Bush, David Frum, is concerned about "the wild accusations and paranoid delusions from the fever swamps." The Los Angeles Times called the increasing number of head case Republicans "the party of the paranoid."

Maureen Dowd wrote what I had been thinking: All this insanity is simply the bigots acting out. I am afraid it may really be true that the loudest naysayers cannot stand it that we have a black president. In what psychiatrists would call "displacement," the anger of some at having an African-American leader has been dolled up with scare tactic complaints and projections. They just can’t live with it, so they’re trying to upend it. Divide and conquer. Read it and weep.

#1 Police have verified that the womans husband is alive-  which would indicate she was playing  them.

#4  I saw the break down of a poll on a tv show.  But I am using a tactic of the right wing when they cans say things and not back them up such as death panels, illegal immigrants and Abortion funding being in the Health Care Reform Package.  If you do the research come up with why my statement is not true.

#1: Not necessarilym that is a conclusion on your part. She could just as easily be a habitual liar. #4: I have never used those types of tactics, so deal with directly and not in generalizations. I now see that you do not appear to be interested in genuine debate just accusing others of insincereity and down right dishonesty as well as mud slinging. I some how don’t believe that you would have accepted this response from me. Prove a negative huh?

You have made statements that are your opinion based on something and not necessarily any facts that you have given.  I view programs and see data and remember the data but not the source.  I notice that when others have provided sources and data it has been disregarded because of the source.  I disregard data from most right leaning conservative sources or left leaning..  I tend to prefer non-partisan data.

You know that some parts of the country are more conservative as identified and referred to by red and blue states.  Do have be provide proof if I say California is a blue state or Alabama is a Red State?

To answer your question: NO, but identifying a state as "red: or "blue" is not the same as labeling southerners as racist birthers.

I did not label southerners as racist.  I said the majority of people who do not believe President Obama was born in this country live in the South.

oh, starry Nite, please provide the study that states that the majority of people who do not believe President Obama was born in this country live in the south….because I haven’t read that yet.   I’ll look forward to you providing this information to all of us.

Personally, and I am southern born and bred, I don’t care where he was born.  As far as I am concerned, his mother was American.  He is American.  However, I have problems with his policies… =0)

The ONLY poll I could find to reference your derrogatory comments about southerners was commissioned by the DailyKos (that fair and unbiased site) and discussed on CNN on the Dobb’s show. Here are the numbers: Nationwide 77% believe the President is an American Citizen, 11% believe he is not and about 12% are unsure. Of those numbers ONLY 23% of the 11% of nonbelievers were from the south. Hardly a majority. But I am sure you will never accept this informaion. I did YOUR work for you. Your statement was not true.

Yes, especially the customers that are missing out on all of the new "houses of ill-repute"! Are kidding me?

ACORN was about to get $8.5 billion (with a B, billion). But their job was done, getting fraudulent votes out for Dems.

And, Deber, you sound certain that Glenn Beck will rise on the 3rd day, too. Come ON!!!!!!

It’s not Glenn Beck who exposed anything about acorn - it all came out in the congress.  If you follow the reports and Committees you would have already known this information.  And, the ACORN debacle unfortunately, came about only because there were a few bad apples who were trying to take shortcuts, in order to get paid for more signatures on their petition sheets that messed up, NOT the entire organization.
