Margo Howard: The Origins of Obama Rage?
Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Margo’s advice column, Dear Margo, appears twice a week — on Thursdays and Fridays — on wowOwow.com.
I wrote this a few days ago, but with my editor decided it might be too incendiary. After former President Carter’s interview, however, I decided to join the still-thin chorus expressing this viewpoint. I think Obama and his supporters have been too willing to turn the other cheek – an admirable impulse in normal times. But when the debate becomes as coarse as it has, rebuttal is needed.
I find what is abroad in the land, as Henry James would have said, simply repellent — forget frightening. An elected official hollers out "You lie!" during a presidential address, yahoos are wearing firearms wherever they go, even at events where the president is, not to mention bars … certainly a great place to have a drunk with a pistol. The desperate lunatic fringe, with some help from the Fox guys, have people (well, OK, the gullible, dim ones) believing that old age is reason enough for execution, Obama was born in Kenya, dissenters will be locked up á la the Nazis and the true mission of this administration is to turn us into a Socialist — if not a Communist — country. Even a true-blue conservative author and speechwriter for George W. Bush, David Frum, is concerned about "the wild accusations and paranoid delusions from the fever swamps." The Los Angeles Times called the increasing number of head case Republicans "the party of the paranoid."
Maureen Dowd wrote what I had been thinking: All this insanity is simply the bigots acting out. I am afraid it may really be true that the loudest naysayers cannot stand it that we have a black president. In what psychiatrists would call "displacement," the anger of some at having an African-American leader has been dolled up with scare tactic complaints and projections. They just can’t live with it, so they’re trying to upend it. Divide and conquer. Read it and weep.

This "Margo" woman, is one of the country’s problems, if her words profess her true feelings.
When did this nation get to the state of not being able to criticize? Americans do not WANT a president, or a senator, or a mayor, they cannot criticize. I don’t really believe Obama thinks his critics are racist, and he damn well better make it clear to these far-left loonies who are starting to unleash hatred and conflict like we’ve never known.
Obama ASKED for this job. Just like BUSH did. And both have been and will be criticized now and forever. People still criticize FDR!
So get over Obama being black! It doesn’t matter. What matter are the policies that come out of his office, and what gets through Congress.
And when conservatives are too afraid to ask questions and make critical comments, because the president is BLACK, that, my friends, is the beginning of the end of America.
Great avatar Xiulan!
Margo seems to be scratching for acceptance or something, I don’t know, uncomfortable though. The Obama supporters are just trying to rally the devisive race baiting and white guilt that got him elected, to bring his numbers up and help pass his socialist programs.
Elementary, yes?
"Elementary, yes?"
Ah, yes, my dear Watson.
Glad you like the avatar. And I think you may have something there….I would love to see a total halt to all the race baiting. It is sadly very devisive.
Racism these days is not necessarily the Black man being hung, being killed, being dragged behind the truck, denied a seat at the lunch counter. Now the racism is indirect - because we all recognize the ‘old’ racism. We know when a person uses the ‘n’ word he’s not meaning Nigeria. So now racism is more insidious. It clothes itself in false patriotism - instead of protecting the womenfolk from the scary black man, they’re protecting the Nation against the scary black man’s politics. But for many - NOT FOR ALL - for many, the bottom line is the scary black man period, and it doesn’t matter that he’s President.
Our national discourse is deranged. The respect we owe the institution, if not the man, gone by the wayside. The calm, rational debate of important issues lost in an opera of the bizarre with each national figure singing a tune more shrill and dischordant than the last. I love drama on stage, in movies, in books. When it comes to politics I mourn the loss of leadership. I mourn the loss of reason. I mourn a populace more into hollow starlets of the moment than the direction their government is taking.
What we do as citizens counts. It counts for our fellows, it counts for history - it counts for the world required to live with the fact our government is the biggest dog on the block. But what we’ve done in allowing national discourse to sink to the level it has - shames us all, and shames us before the world. We are still a young nation, but we have recently become a *childish* nation.
How do we know that? What if they were concealed?
We know that because every other time a gun was concealed near a president, that president was either shot or shot at. These current nut cases wore there guns out in the open proudly….. who do you think they were prepared to kill? What do you think it would have taken to set them off? Would you be as comfortable if I came to your neighborhood with some buddies and we walked around with our assault weapons
