Margo Howard: The Origins of Obama Rage?
Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Margo’s advice column, Dear Margo, appears twice a week — on Thursdays and Fridays — on wowOwow.com.
I wrote this a few days ago, but with my editor decided it might be too incendiary. After former President Carter’s interview, however, I decided to join the still-thin chorus expressing this viewpoint. I think Obama and his supporters have been too willing to turn the other cheek – an admirable impulse in normal times. But when the debate becomes as coarse as it has, rebuttal is needed.
I find what is abroad in the land, as Henry James would have said, simply repellent — forget frightening. An elected official hollers out "You lie!" during a presidential address, yahoos are wearing firearms wherever they go, even at events where the president is, not to mention bars … certainly a great place to have a drunk with a pistol. The desperate lunatic fringe, with some help from the Fox guys, have people (well, OK, the gullible, dim ones) believing that old age is reason enough for execution, Obama was born in Kenya, dissenters will be locked up á la the Nazis and the true mission of this administration is to turn us into a Socialist — if not a Communist — country. Even a true-blue conservative author and speechwriter for George W. Bush, David Frum, is concerned about "the wild accusations and paranoid delusions from the fever swamps." The Los Angeles Times called the increasing number of head case Republicans "the party of the paranoid."
Maureen Dowd wrote what I had been thinking: All this insanity is simply the bigots acting out. I am afraid it may really be true that the loudest naysayers cannot stand it that we have a black president. In what psychiatrists would call "displacement," the anger of some at having an African-American leader has been dolled up with scare tactic complaints and projections. They just can’t live with it, so they’re trying to upend it. Divide and conquer. Read it and weep.

Why do you keep promoting the site ? It is laughable and so fake.
President Carter???….the poor man is doddering. Even whlie still President, in 1979, he reported to the Associated Press that while fishing, he was attacked by a huge, swimming, hissing rabbit, which he whacked with his paddle.
He is, after all, considered by many historians to be the worst President we’ve ever had.
Many of the people who are acting out against Obama are not consciously aware of why they are doing it. Racism can be deeply-rooted in the subconscious.
It just looks racist because 99% of the people protesting can’t decide which part of Obama’s vision they don’t like and they’re white. Health care is the first battle and we’re getting a good look at the opposition to anything else the President tries to do for this country. I suggest better tea parties to show support for those of us who do support the President.
Although I could do without Nancy Pelosi most of the time. Sry California she’s a little too far left even for me.
I voted for Obama, I wanted change from George Bush, I was one of his Independent supporters and I am not happy with what is happening and it has nothing to do with the color of his skin.
I did not want bigger government, and I am wondering where all this transparency is that I was promised. I think healthcare reform is needed but not the way its being gone about…I dont like the fact that we are bailing out all these banks and businesses. The list goes on. I dont know of anything that he has done that I like and I know that a large majority of the people I know that voted for him are really disappointed and we might as well have just kept bush for another four years.
I think what Wilson did at the speech was totally out of line, because it was disrespectful of the president reguardless of agree or disagree, Obama is the president and deserves respect but I do not think it was racist and I disagree with Carter on that.
We have a race problem in this country but I dont think that race has anything to do with why the majority of us disagree with this president and it would be nice if people would stop blaming everything on that.
I think when there is radical change being introduced, our failings and weaknesses come out as our vulnerabilities take over
Changes to how we do healthcare is really akin to a revolution, no matter if you support it or otherwise, a 180 degree turn still throws people off balance - so we have to expect this
Racist tendencies, otherwise suppressed, will come out when fear and anger rise over logic and careful analysis
It’s sad (and scary) but it’s the same human response when people are fearful or feel vulnerable and "fundamentalism" takes over - conjuring up "getting back to fundamentals" comes out when people are uncomfortable, vulnerable or fearful and we see how well that goes every day (not)
on a lighter note, though this is hardly light, and on a smaller scale, we often see the stress, change and vulnerabilities within ourselves when we see the adage "weddings and funerals bring out the best and the worst in people" play out in our own lives
I am not condoning what is being said out there - I fear those angry protesters more than I fear the change of the healthcare system by far - but it will help us address the situation if we see it on its face, the changes we are seeking (and need to happen) are revolutionary and a revolt needs to be expected
I have drunk the Obama Kool-Aid so I do have faith that his plan is better than what we have now - it will not be perfect, but what we have now is horrific so anything is better than this
Three cheers, Cathy! All these folks shouting "Racist!" need to look within themselves. I would argue they’re only demonstrating their own need for racist response.
I, too would have voted for Condy Rice. I don’t care if a person is bright green if I can believe they’re right on the issues.
