Margo Howard: The Origins of Obama Rage?

Our Dear Margo shares what she fears to be the truth behind the growing dissent for President Barack Obama and his policies.
Margo Howard

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Margo’s advice column, Dear Margo, appears twice a week — on Thursdays and Fridays — on wowOwow.com.

I wrote this a few days ago, but with my editor decided it might be too incendiary. After former President Carter’s interview, however, I decided to join the still-thin chorus expressing this viewpoint. I think Obama and his supporters have been too willing to turn the other cheek – an admirable impulse in normal times. But when the debate becomes as coarse as it has, rebuttal is needed.

I find what is abroad in the land, as Henry James would have said, simply repellent — forget frightening. An elected official hollers out "You lie!" during a presidential address, yahoos are wearing firearms wherever they go, even at events where the president is, not to mention bars … certainly a great place to have a drunk with a  pistol. The desperate lunatic fringe, with some help from the Fox guys, have people (well, OK, the gullible, dim ones) believing that old age is reason enough for execution, Obama was born in Kenya, dissenters will be locked up á la the Nazis and the true mission of this administration is to turn us into a Socialist — if not a Communist — country. Even a true-blue conservative author and speechwriter for George W. Bush, David Frum, is concerned about "the wild accusations and paranoid delusions from the fever swamps." The Los Angeles Times called the increasing number of head case Republicans "the party of the paranoid."

Maureen Dowd wrote what I had been thinking: All this insanity is simply the bigots acting out. I am afraid it may really be true that the loudest naysayers cannot stand it that we have a black president. In what psychiatrists would call "displacement," the anger of some at having an African-American leader has been dolled up with scare tactic complaints and projections. They just can’t live with it, so they’re trying to upend it. Divide and conquer. Read it and weep.

MQC-   The CBO will score it and it will not add to the deficit and will be paid for the means that the President talked about. What is difference ?  We are going to pay either way and something must be done.

You’re right because no one except the very wealthy can afford to pay the costs of hospitalization for a serious illness or injury out-of-pocket and, guess what?  There is no magic fairy!  I’m with you—we need healthcare reform.  What’s on the table may not be perfect and isn’t going to please everyone, for sure, but all legislation evolves and there is such a thing as an amendment.  If something doesn’t work, it can be changed.

EM…nothing is a ‘coincidence’ in any of this.

Yesterday was the 70th anniversary of Russia invading Poland…and how did our American President mark the day with our Polish allies (the same Poles that brought down Nazism and Communism!!!).  He took away their funding for Eastern Europe’s Missile Defense System.

Visit Sky News; or any english text European news source…they are absolutely outraged.  Obama is cutting ties to our European allies.  But, on the plus…he did draw huge praise from Putin.

Speaks volumes.

Mary Quite-Contrary, your hyperbole makes it nearly impossible to analyze what this decision means to us. All these gross exaggerations do is raise hackles and cause those who might actually disagree with the president’s decision to defend him.

No hyperbole rocky…Obama cut the Missile Defense Program.  Its final; Putin is soooo happy he is suggesting lifting trade embargos.  And the European media is trully outraged.  See…the Poles really are afraid of an Iranian Nuke.  And the Poles have historically stood up to Nazism and Communism.  They were (til yesterday) our stuanchest ally in the region (again no hyperbole…fact).  Kind of a slap in the face…Polish soldiers are with our forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Btw…during the Obama European Campaign Tour (remember the big event at the Brandenburg Gates) Candidate/President to Be Obama ‘promised’ to continue to ‘defend’ Europe.   Stunning…but let’s just say many a linguist in the European and British media was busy translating ‘you lie’ into Polish.

I have to do a lot of reading up to figure out what all this really means. Such things are never quite as simple as they at first appear. Meantime, may I leave you with a Bertrand Russell question, paraphrased of course: Why is it that propaganda is so much more successful when it stirs up hatred than when it attempts to stir up compassion and understanding?

It is obvious that you know nothing about the missle system that was in place or the one that is being improved.  I say we trust the people who are involved and have all the information like of Secretary of Defense.

It is ridiculous that so many people insist that because one doesn’t agree with Obama’s policies it constitutes a racist attitude.   It is as ludicrous as saying if someone doesn’t care for Burger King they must dislike hamburgers.  To say I must be racist because I disagree with Obama’s policies is just as outrageous and comical.  Could it be that there are actually still people out there that believe in the principles upon which the country was founded and it has absolutely nothing to do with race?  I just don’t believe in free rides.  I don’t believe that people who did more with their lives should have to carry my weight.  What happened to the people of this country to give them this crazy sense of entitlement?  I just don’t get it.    This has absolutely nothing to do with race and everything to do with the fact that this man is slowly tearing apart the very fabric of this country.

Special note to Belinda Joy -

Dry your tears, my sister.  Take a walk in a park.  Look around you.  Talk to people.  There are so many good people out there, people who don’t care if you’re white or pink or tan or brown or red.  Smile at them.  Most will smile back.  They may be Democrats, or Republicans, or know nothing of politics, but mostly theyre just like you and me.

I found long ago when I smile, or provide a little kindness, that’s what I get back.  Not always, but often enough.

We can argue politics…even heatedly…but most of us would, when needed, do the right thing.  Whether it’s comforting a kid with a skinned knee, or helping an old person unlock their car, or any other of all the little things that help make up the "good life."

If love really does make the world go ‘round, then tolerance makes us hope it keeps spinning.  And I may dislike vehemently some of the things I hear and read, but I would fight to the death for anyone’s right to say it.

I am so sorry you are hurt, and I will pray for you tonight, that you sleep well, and wake refreshed to face another day in America.  Your country, and mine.

Carole, I’m not sure you should an dignified Holy Mackrel’s question with a response. Afterall, she could not form an opinion on your statements without knowing your color. She just couldn’t determine the validity of your statements based on their merit. She had to factor in your color to decide if they were of value. Hmmm racist much?

I think it’s time for another "Beer Summit" at the picnic table.  Wilson, Carter, West and Swift (sorry, you only get to have rootbeer)  Come on Obama, step up to the plate and address this like you did when you called out the police for acting stupidly when arresting Gates.  You want to be the referee in all this mess, so blow the whistle and let the games begin.  Or are Rev. Wright’s words still embedded in you mind?

All the history of this man’s upbringing allows him to yell, "You lie!" to a Black man who is unarguably above him in the pecking order.

__________________________________________

You miss the real point. Joe Wilson is allowed to yell, "You lie!" to a black man because the black man is perceived to be below him in the pecking order. And that attitude was the one thing LBJ could not change with the stroke of his pen. Although that pen was the main reason why so many Democrats became Republicans.

Baby Im curious- "You miss the real point. Joe Wilson is allowed to yell, "You lie!" to a black man because the black man is perceived to be below him in the pecking order."  You know this how?

You know Wilson personally & talked to him after he yelled "you lie" and that is what he told you!  See that is the point me and so many others have been trying to make on this thread.  Just b/c he yelled "you lie" does not mean he is racist or feel that black people are below him - he yelled it b/c Obama lied.  What he said was incorrect and didnt change in the healthcare bill until the next day AFTER Obama said what he did…

I also find it funny that Bush can get booed by a whole group of Dems at his 2005 state of the union address yet noone yelled racism or hatred or anything else - most clapped when Bush got booed.
