Margo Howard: The Origins of Obama Rage?
Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Margo’s advice column, Dear Margo, appears twice a week — on Thursdays and Fridays — on wowOwow.com.
I wrote this a few days ago, but with my editor decided it might be too incendiary. After former President Carter’s interview, however, I decided to join the still-thin chorus expressing this viewpoint. I think Obama and his supporters have been too willing to turn the other cheek – an admirable impulse in normal times. But when the debate becomes as coarse as it has, rebuttal is needed.
I find what is abroad in the land, as Henry James would have said, simply repellent — forget frightening. An elected official hollers out "You lie!" during a presidential address, yahoos are wearing firearms wherever they go, even at events where the president is, not to mention bars … certainly a great place to have a drunk with a pistol. The desperate lunatic fringe, with some help from the Fox guys, have people (well, OK, the gullible, dim ones) believing that old age is reason enough for execution, Obama was born in Kenya, dissenters will be locked up á la the Nazis and the true mission of this administration is to turn us into a Socialist — if not a Communist — country. Even a true-blue conservative author and speechwriter for George W. Bush, David Frum, is concerned about "the wild accusations and paranoid delusions from the fever swamps." The Los Angeles Times called the increasing number of head case Republicans "the party of the paranoid."
Maureen Dowd wrote what I had been thinking: All this insanity is simply the bigots acting out. I am afraid it may really be true that the loudest naysayers cannot stand it that we have a black president. In what psychiatrists would call "displacement," the anger of some at having an African-American leader has been dolled up with scare tactic complaints and projections. They just can’t live with it, so they’re trying to upend it. Divide and conquer. Read it and weep.

starry Nite, I don’t know who your friends are but my friends never send me emails like the one you’ve described. I’m on several other sites every day posting and those sites never mention race as an issue. If it is mentioned, it is always by a democrat screaming "racism" when the president is criticized. On this site, we have posters who consistenlty call the republicans racist simply because they are unable to defend the fact that nothing Obama has done so far has worked. Since he has an all democratic congress you can’t blame the republicans. They don’t have a voice!
Republicans aren’t obstructionists unless, of course, you feel it is wrong to fight for what you believe in. If that is obstructing Obama’s ability to have his way in the White House, then perhaps we need to take away our freedom of speech. Republicans, like democrats during our last presidency, are opposing policies they feel are wrong for our country. So, I guess we can call the democrats "obstructionists" too when we have a republican president? I’m just trying to understand your comments.
No one is being used to march on Washington. Martin Luther King and Jesse Jackson didn’t use their followers when they marched and rallied or did they?
When I have stated that I didn’t feel Obama was a real American I said that in the context of his upbringing (communist leaning grandparents and mother) his radical affiliations (Bill Ayers and others) and his far left leaning agenda. It had nothing to do with his race.
Your last sentence I found curious. So, now you are reduced to calling posters who disagree with your way of thinking …. stupid? That’s a sign of desperation, starry Nite. You know how the saying goes, "When your opponent calls you a name you know you have won."
I’ll take a bow. : )
I can and do blame Republicans for being obstructionists for spreading false information and not working toward a solution in good faith. Such statements such as death panels and socialized medicine and other ludicrous and false claims about health care reform are not necessary to discuss policy differences.
I resent you consistently stating that people who are liberal leaning are not real Americans. I think the tea baggers and Ayers have much in common. Ayers believed the country was going in the wrong direction. So he wanted to get their attention. The only difference between Ayers and the tea baggers is that his protest went awry. Some one was killed much like someone could be killed by those bringing guns to the rallies.
I said people are being used to rally against their own best interest. The followers of Dr. King all knew why they were marching. These people at the tea party’s want their country back. That is not a policy are reason that anyone can understand.
To rail against Health Care Reform is not logical . The Obama administration underestimated the damage the Republicans with scare tactics especially against seniors. They played to resentment of illegal immigrants.
Let’s look at this logically. The American people were handed a 1,100 page healthcare bill filled with legal jargon….not easy to understand even for a bright attorney. And, you expect the average American to understand it? Is it no wonder that people would be fearful of it?
I blame the Obama administration for not making it CLEAR from the beginning how the healthcare plan would work for all Americans. They created the fear by not being clear.
You may not like it, but illegal immigrants need to follow the law. They need to be held accountable for entering our country without doing the proper paperwork. Our soaring healthcare costs can be directly attributable to fraud and abuse. That is cause for resentment among the taxpayers in this country.
I didn’t state that people who are liberal leaning are not real Americans. Where did you read that?
I wasn’t handed a "1,100 page healthcare bill", and I would like to see it. I have searched for it. The only document I found had 400 some pages. And when you tried to follow links to other parts of it, it would time out when you tried to go back. And you would have to search for it all over again. So, where do I get this 1,100 page document?
Thanks in advance.
Hey Deber…it feels like I know you! Maybe in a "former" life!I couldn’t agree more with what you have said.
It is a shame that so many are "silent" on this subject, I believe that the "majority" believe as you do.

Naw, it’s racism in it’s most intricately molded and woven hatefilled speech (written AND spoken)

That was then woof, and not by much. If it were now, we would be the winners.
So there.
