Margo Howard: Whither America, Whither the World?

Our dearest Margo recently got an earful about the future of the American ‘empire’ … and shares what she learned with wOw.
Margo Howard

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Margo’s advice column, Dear Margo, appears twice a week — on Thursdays and Fridays — on wowOwow.com.

There is much talk, in intellectual circles and out, about whither America; whither the world? Where are we headed? What path are we on? It is impossible to know, of course, but I had a most interesting conversation (first by phone, then e-mail) with a longtime friend who works in a sensitive part of the government. He doesn’t know more than we do (well, actually he probably does!) but he has thought about this question to a greater degree than most people, I would guess. He is professionally concerned with war, and wishes not to be named. I share with you his hypothesis, extrapolating to the best of my ability what he said, because it makes a great deal of sense.

This chap believes that our world is headed back to a medieval-like period … not something that will happen next week or next year, but more a trend for the century. He points to the fact that there was Rome. There was the British empire. History will record the twentieth century as that of the USA. The previous empires did not last, and he believes the American "empire" will not, either.

The reasons it cannot last, he believes, are as simple as the laws of physics. The generally accepted numbers at the turn of the last century were that America had 5% of the world’s population and used 25% of the world’s energy. Numbers like that simply are not sustainable, in terms of relative energy usage or production in a growing world.

Technology is also a great leveler. In the midst of the twentieth century much of America’s great technology was homegrown. Not all, but much. We kept producing great ideas, but production was transferred elsewhere. Now the cost of production has dropped and many more people can afford top-end technology. An advanced cellular smart phone has more computing power than was used to build the first nuclear bomb or the Apollo spaceships that took men to the moon – 40 years ago this month.

As technology spreads, so does the fundamental level of education. That does not mean tribesmen in the middle of Africa or the Amazon are necessarily becoming fluent in Java programming, but many more people in the first and second world are. Whether or not America’s great educational system is crumbling, others are definitely gaining.

The Cold War was a containment war. It will be a long time before any other single country can lead a coalition in such global containment again. A war against religious extremists cannot be fought that way, and as the world becomes more interconnected there is also a problem with American foreign policy. To understand this problem, all you have to do is understand the game of football (which he does and I do not) as played by Americans, as contrasted with the way it is played by non-Americans.

Ask any American, he said, about the game of football and he or she will tell you it is played by selected large men wearing massive amounts of padding. It is a violent game with many arcane rules. Everyone agrees on when a play starts and it keeps going until the progress of the ball grinds to a halt. Both sides then agree to return to their respective sides, figure out what to do, come together and then all start again at a specific point. Furthermore, there are many referees on the field and at the pro level there’s the use of instant replay so everyone can agree on what happened. There is also a single clock. Everyone sees the clock, everyone understands the rules about the clock and everyone agrees the game is over when the one big game clock everyone sees finally gets to zero.

thank you Lila.

i guess it comes down to this:

are you worried about profits now, or survival for our collective children?

Excellent post Lila.  I think that what Margo was trying to put across was that through-out history great cilivilizations have risen only to fall. The football anology was spot-on as Americans like to be arm-chair quarterbacks. Do your job, go home and have a beer. Unlike our opponents who are replaying our moves and finding better ways to beat us. Everyone wants "World Peace" but do they really? No, humans are competitive and everyone wants to be a winner. It is a sad fact but true, again history points this out to us.  Do I think America is on it’s way out? No I don’t, but we have the opportunity to change and grow in a different direction. The problem is not whether you are a democrat or a republican. The problem is how you percieve change and your ability to acclimate to it. I completely agree with your assessment of the earths’ resources. The Earth is sick and we had better learn how to take care of her because if we don’t we will die and it will not be the result of nuclear annihilation. We will have commited suicide. Soylent Green indeed !!

dawn, american children are raised to compete, europeans far less so. the europeans are raised to cooperate with each other. if we survive the next couple of hundred years, it will be because we cooperated with each other.

Dawn,

When I read your sentence "Everyone wants "World Peace"  a visual came into my mind.

Two babies playing in a room with one toy………..maybe nicely at first but eventually one of the babies

wants the TOY all to them selves…………War erupts.  They are babies and don’t understand the concept of War and it’s consequence’s.  The World is run by Adults…we know the horrors of War and the ultimate outcome.  There are no real winners.  The sacrifices are always to great.

When as Human Beings are we going to grow up?  WE MUST LEARN TO RESPECT EACH OTHER AND LIVE TOGETHER IF WE ARE TO SURVIVE.

The Air we breath is not political………..The Food we eat has no politics. The water we need to survive doesn’t care if you are a

Republican/Democrate/or Independent……….black or white………religious or athiest.

Get real people.  Families exist together living in One House and have different politics.  They don’t go to war.

We are ONE HUMAN FAMILY……………we must learn to love and respect each other.

Dona,

Very well put !! Unfortunately the POWERS that be don’t see it that way. I know I’ll never see it in my lifetime but I pray that my grandchildren will. Have a nice weekend.

I do agree with the football/futbol analogy.  We fell into narcissism’s trap thinking again that the universe revolved around the earth in fact, that revolves around us but we are just a part.  Can we accept this and grow together as a country?  I certainly hope so.  We must believe in ourselves, our country, and our neighbors in this world.

We won’t be given the keys to the universe’s car if all we’re going to do is go 100 miles an hour (re: 5% -25% energy ratio) and run it into a tree. We’ve got to know it just won’t work that way.  Out of chaos, order.

Again with cycles. No one will heed the call about the earth until it is too late.

As I understand it, global warming is only another way to pull God fearing Americans away from Rush and the Republican party and away from God. According to Reublicans global warming is a Democratic initiative.

During the earliest years of recorded time the Egyptians ruled; throughout the dark and middle ages, the Romans ruled. Once Great Britain and the bulk of Europe broke away from Vatican Rule the fine arts, organized education and personal freedoms Normal 0 flourished throughout Europe. Great Britain was the world superpower - indeed, the sun never set over the British Empire.

Once America was settled, we - America - became the latest - and current - World Superpower.  And now we, just as the Egyptians, the Romans and the rulers of England and Europe before us, have gotten cocky, and far too big for our britches.

We are haughty in our role as the "superior" world power.  Indeed, our collective confidence has eroded into smug satisfaction - even as our jobs are off-shored, our education system has eroded and our health care has created a deep divide between haves and have-nots.  A general sense of "we are, and will always be The Chosen Ones" still permeates the hearts and minds of those who cannot be bothered to listen to reason, compare facts and comprehend our precariously dire situation due to the stresses of economic meltdown as well as fighting wars on two fronts.  We’re in trouble folks, and no amount of partisan ranting is going to fix this mess any time soon.

Because an opinion has been voiced over and over again does not make it become fact, based upon the number if times it has been googled, tweeted, blogged, or texted. If rules are to be applied, they must be fair and consistent:  Are you with us?  If not, you’re against us.  Sound familiar?

The simple analysis, based upon world history and the passage of time?  "What goes up - eventually comes down."  If we don’t learn from our mistakes, we end up repeating them.  And that is a lesson taught early and often in US elementary schools.  We also need to reaffirm the following lession:  We have two ears, two eyes - and only one mouth.  Please use proportionately…
