Margo Howard: Whither America, Whither the World?

Our dearest Margo recently got an earful about the future of the American ‘empire’ … and shares what she learned with wOw.
Margo Howard

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Margo’s advice column, Dear Margo, appears twice a week — on Thursdays and Fridays — on wowOwow.com.

There is much talk, in intellectual circles and out, about whither America; whither the world? Where are we headed? What path are we on? It is impossible to know, of course, but I had a most interesting conversation (first by phone, then e-mail) with a longtime friend who works in a sensitive part of the government. He doesn’t know more than we do (well, actually he probably does!) but he has thought about this question to a greater degree than most people, I would guess. He is professionally concerned with war, and wishes not to be named. I share with you his hypothesis, extrapolating to the best of my ability what he said, because it makes a great deal of sense.

This chap believes that our world is headed back to a medieval-like period … not something that will happen next week or next year, but more a trend for the century. He points to the fact that there was Rome. There was the British empire. History will record the twentieth century as that of the USA. The previous empires did not last, and he believes the American "empire" will not, either.

The reasons it cannot last, he believes, are as simple as the laws of physics. The generally accepted numbers at the turn of the last century were that America had 5% of the world’s population and used 25% of the world’s energy. Numbers like that simply are not sustainable, in terms of relative energy usage or production in a growing world.

Technology is also a great leveler. In the midst of the twentieth century much of America’s great technology was homegrown. Not all, but much. We kept producing great ideas, but production was transferred elsewhere. Now the cost of production has dropped and many more people can afford top-end technology. An advanced cellular smart phone has more computing power than was used to build the first nuclear bomb or the Apollo spaceships that took men to the moon – 40 years ago this month.

As technology spreads, so does the fundamental level of education. That does not mean tribesmen in the middle of Africa or the Amazon are necessarily becoming fluent in Java programming, but many more people in the first and second world are. Whether or not America’s great educational system is crumbling, others are definitely gaining.

The Cold War was a containment war. It will be a long time before any other single country can lead a coalition in such global containment again. A war against religious extremists cannot be fought that way, and as the world becomes more interconnected there is also a problem with American foreign policy. To understand this problem, all you have to do is understand the game of football (which he does and I do not) as played by Americans, as contrasted with the way it is played by non-Americans.

Ask any American, he said, about the game of football and he or she will tell you it is played by selected large men wearing massive amounts of padding. It is a violent game with many arcane rules. Everyone agrees on when a play starts and it keeps going until the progress of the ball grinds to a halt. Both sides then agree to return to their respective sides, figure out what to do, come together and then all start again at a specific point. Furthermore, there are many referees on the field and at the pro level there’s the use of instant replay so everyone can agree on what happened. There is also a single clock. Everyone sees the clock, everyone understands the rules about the clock and everyone agrees the game is over when the one big game clock everyone sees finally gets to zero.

SG…yes, last time I checked…human beings were human beings. Interesting how you have nothing to refute my posts with…but only a personal attack.

Think for yourself…yes that is wonderful…now come up with some data that I can research, or that sheds some light on these issues.

I "follow" the research, the facts where ever they lead me. I started this past year out, wondering to myself why things weren’t making sense….I kept digging…I kept researching…I was very alone in this venture untill recently. After Obama started failing to do what his promised, more people were doing the same thing. Despite the media control of this administration, the information IS getting out….but ONLY to those that really want it.

For those that sit at home, lapping up the pre-fab news for the masses….they can only sit there in denial. Research all that anyone brings to your attention, use many different sources…research and you will connect the dots.

This is not a Dem or Rep. thing….it is a totally other animal here. Far left…socialist agenda, transnationalist in scope.

Not American.

Try this on for size S G:

Walter E. Williams, Author, Economist and Professor of Economics, On Cap-and-Trade Legislation:

"’Cap and trade’ is first a massive indirect tax on the American people and hence another source of revenue for Congress. More importantly ‘cap and trade’ is just about the most effective tool for controlling most economic activity short of openly declaring ourselves a communist nation and it’s a radical environmentalist’s dream come true."

Funny SG…the extent that some will go to so that they do not have to face facts. Amazing really….

Now SG….how about you refute what ALL of these professional and respected people are saying? You think that by calling them "fear mongering lies"…that their learned opinions are erased?

One day, when you actually research what these people are saying, you will be forced to face the truth; Obama has lied, he is still lying and his pulling a massive government take-over of our economy for the benefit of a FEW…an elitist few. Many Americans are being used because they want so desparately to believe the fairy tale.

You don’t believe that his agenda is for a socialist type govenment? Then you are not listening, you are not reading, you are ignoring the publically stated beliefs of his appointees.

Denial does not work for me.

One more thing. This all for the rich and none for everyone else doesn’t work for me. Call it whatever you will. America is suppose to be about a chance for all. Not for just a select few.

In that case SG…you should be FURIOUS that Obama has lied to you….HUGE corporations were bailed out and set on the path for BILLIONS UPON BILLIONS of profit from green technology….while YOU pay for it!

All of your disposable income will be gone…and just think…if you had a hobby, or enjoyed doing some type of local entertainment…not only will you not be able to afford it…THE SMALL BUSINESSES will be closed; the local quilting shop, the local bowling alley, the local theater, the local arcade, the local small buisnesses will fire employees….then close.

Want to go zip lining…good luck. Want to ride some horses…good luck. Want to learn how to dance…good luck.

There will be no more "chance for all"…are you that unaware of how socialism stops individual entrepreneurs? There will be government jobs, and the BIG corporations that government owns. You are decieved by this "spread the wealth" propaganda.

Have you no idea what goes on in socialist countries? 2 classes, that’s it. Here in America…if you want to be one of "the select few" you can be. No excuses…learn to sing, dance, write, in

Those that don’t work now, will not work with socialistic government…YOU just pay for it all.

What a bunch of class baiting, race baiting cr@p that is….jealousy is ruining America.

Margot-

Your "friend" in government may be a deep thinker, but he needs to think with all of the facts.  Yes, the US uses 25% of the world’s oil supply, but that is only half the equation …. we PRODUCE more than 25% of the world’s gross economic output.  That is why we have a high standard of living.  We are the economic engine that drives the world economy.  The platitude about the US being an energy hog is so simple-minded, its what you DO with that energy that is important.  We create wealth with all of that energy.

As normal the republican nay-saying has begun. They ask Ben Franklin a question one day when he came out for air.Mr. Franklin what have you given us? He said " A republic if you can keep it. " Unlike the republicans Franklin was quite aware of Rome and of history. I think the religious extremist in our own country are just as dangerous as any of the others in the world. They are all the same misguided humans. Your friend sadly enough is probably right.

This isn’t about the religious extremists anymore.   They aren’t dangerous.   They are practicing their freedom to worship as they choose.   To that end, America wants that freedom to extend to the world.   Because there are countries who kill over religious beliefs, we remain ready to help their achieve a democracy where they, too, can be religious extremists, an atheist, a Christian or whatever religion that suits them without the fear of being killed.

We, too, want President Obama to give "us a republic we can keep" not one that undermines and diminishes the millions of lives that have been lost to make America a strong and caring country.   So far, we see nothing to indicate that President Obama is proud of America.   Clearly,  that’s something we do not want to keep.

Religious extremists whether they be Christian evangelists or jihadist muslims are dangerous Deber.  Look at 9/11, the Mubai slaughter and the bombings of clinics.  If that’s practicing one’s "religion", that would be a big no thank you from this guy. And America would do well do practice freedom here for every citizen before we worry about the rest of the world which doesn’t in many cases give a hoot in hell whether they’re democratic or not.
