Mark Sanford: Another Blow to Republicans? | 06/25/2009 10:00 am

Hours after sun-kissed Gov. Mark Sanford made a very public confession that he left the country for five days without telling a soul to be with his Argentinean mistress, the sensual e-mails the South Carolina Republican exchanged with his lover are brought to light. E-mails obtained by The State newspaper in December are between a woman named Maria in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the governor — who once had his eye on a 2012 White House run. The series of e-mails date between July 4 - 10, 2008, and are posted online by The State newspaper. In an excerpt from one e-mail, the governor expresses deep chemistry.

From: Mark Sanford
To: Maria

Sweetest,
You have a particular grace and calm that I adore. You have a level of sophistication that is so fitting with your beauty. I could digress and say that you have the ability to give magnificently gentle kisses, or that I love your tan lines or that I love the curves of your hips, the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of night’s light — but hey, that would be going into the sexual details …
When the e-mails were first obtained, Sanford’s spokespeople would not authenticate them. However, The State reports, the governor’s office Wednesday did not argue the authenticity.

Sanford and Jenny, his wife of 20 years, reportedly separated two weeks ago and she has known about Sanford’s extramarital interest since December. Jenny is a former Wall Street executive and has helped Sanford manage all his campaigns.

Politico reports that Sanford has taken at least three taxpayer-paid trips to Argentina — but it’s unclear whether he met with his lover during any of them. For this latest trip, Sanford told reporters that he used his own money to pay for his plane ticket.

Argentinean media reveal a bit more information about the alleged mistress. Her name is María Belén Shapur, age 43, and The State believes she has two children.

For 18 emotional minutes, the 49-year-old governor apologizes profusely to his wife and four sons, who had no clue where he was. Watch:

Humans are far from perfect, we know. But tell us: Why do people in power (and in the public eye) cheat … and think that they can get away with it?

A marriage is often complex and a woman can love her husband enough to want to save her marriage. That actually is what marriage is…good/tough times and working through them.

what happened to morality? you are supposed to stay in any marriage through thick and thin - to get divorced would destroy the sanctity of the marriage!

just like the gays…

"INFIDEL" is a term of reproach which Christians and Mohammedans "in their modesty", agree to apply to those who differ from them".

What a great story! Sanford isn’t bad looking and from reading the e-mails probably a good lover! TV Reality!

Chappaquidick, has everything to do with this…Joan Kennedy was just about the first “wronged spouse” to stand at that podium, in the camera shot, over her failed pol husband’s left shoulder (the “heart” photo) and “stand by her man” whilst he apologized, pontificated or spun the “incident” he was caught in. Mercifully, most paramours live on (to write a best seller)…unlike Ms. Kopechne.

If I May

From the Democratic Party Platform 2008 (Renewing America’s Promise) - "We are a party of inclusion and respect differences of perspective and belief…We will form a government as decent, purposeful, and compassionate as the American people themselves."

Those of you making disrespectful comments toward Sanford’s religious beliefs and the Bible may want to register for another party in the next election.

That one of our political representatives fell outside his OWN values is of no consequence to me or IMO to any other citizen, unless he broke the law of this land, which is strictly nonsectarian. At least it’s suppose to be.

If the Christian religious conservatives would stop trying to make our country into their own private authoritarian theocracy — and when the Christian religious conservatives stop condemning and publicly punishing everyone who gets "caught" just being human (and not breaking any law) — then maybe we can have some peace in our everyday dealings with each other and in our state and national legislatures where work NEEDS to be done!

caj p, your grandstanding is not admirable.   People make choices.  They often times make mistakes.   We don’t have a world of perfect people.  What we do have is a world of people who basically don’t want to hurt other people.   The heart is a lonely hunter and because of reasons we don’t know about, the heart feels lost and rejected.   Sanford charted his course and he not only lost his family but he lost his career.   Personal responsibility.   At the beginning and at the end of the day we are all responsible for the choices we make.   Some of those choices aren’t good.

I take no delight in Gov. Sanfords destruction. There is no joy in seeing a family destroyed.

Romans 3:23 " For have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

John 8:7 " Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

However, I am appalled by his hiprocrisy.

My prayers go out to his wife and children. I wish Mrs Sanford and her children healing and a blessed future.
