Marlo Thomas: The Answer Is Always 'Yes'

Any question that begins, ‘Should women be allowed to …’
Marlo Thomas
Let’s cut to the chase: Any question that begins, "Should women be allowed to" should immediately be answered with "Yes." Do we ever hear debates about whether a man should be allowed to do something? The more specific answer to today’s question is, "Of course." From what I’ve read, there has never been a study that indicated that properly trained women are any less qualified for combat positions than men. As in all things, the choice should be the woman’s.

I grew up watching Danny Thomas.  Also, I remember him kneeling down promising to build a great big tribute to St. Jude, if only he would become famous and make it in the entertainment business.  Today I admire Marlo for her dedication in keeping her father’s dream alive.      My dream is one day to hook-up with Marlo and open an artists studio where my oil paintings would be sold donating monies from each painting to children’s cancer.

That sounds cool, Linda. I know a very good artist who last year gave the Pope a statue he made of St. Francis of Assisi. Mic Carlson is his name. You can Google-research him.

Thank you for keeping women encouraged and empowered to step up to the plate and make a difference in this world. Who so ever will - should be the statement for a time such as this. God bless you! Germaine Mitchell

Oh I just had to tweet this. For 40 years I’ve loved Marlo Thomas with all my heart, lifelong hero and inspiration before there was such a thing as contemporary role models. Brilliant and beautiful as the day is long.

Women should be ‘allowed’ to do anything they want to.  The question is why would they want to, aside from the fact that of course they would want to serve their country in this way?  And to gain the benefits of combat duty, and other benefits accruing from service in the military, ie., health care, education, etc.   I hope someday, there will not be the need for either men or women to be involved in ground combat.  But I am an idealist and I can always dream, can’t I?

"Do we ever hear debates whether a man should be allowed to do something?" YES! We hear that in gay couples wanting to adopt. We hear that in debates re:  men taking over running a household and being the caretaker of children when the wives are out working. We have come a long way in recognizing the strengths, the differences, the ability of both genders, but we still have a long way to go.

AND the issue of gays and lesbians serving in the military. When is this issue finally going to be settled, finally going to be put to rest and given a long awaited funeral––with flowers and flags.

And that is why we love you, Margo.  Right to the point, and point to the RIGHT (as in correct, not political leaning).  Thanks for this clarity. Should women? Unqualified YES!
