Mary Matalin: Obama Brought on Cheney Criticism

Matalin, a former Cheney spokeswoman, claims the president deserves Cheney’s criticism.

The Washington Post today has a piece on how Republican Party members are uncomfortable with Dick Cheney’s constant criticism of President Obama.

While many of the sources — most of whom preferred to be anonymous — say Cheney’s television appearances hurt their party, Mary Matalin, a Republican strategist who once worked as Cheney’s spokeswoman, came to the former vice president’s defense.

According to Matalin, it’s Obama who deserves the blame for Cheney’s outbursts:

If Barack Obama had come in and done what he said he was going to do and look at the stuff and see what is working, then Cheney would have continued to do what he was doing — working on memoirs, finishing his house. He’s got a good life. He’s got stuff going on. He doesn’t care about being on TV. There’s no more politics there. He’s not settling any scores. He just wants people to understand.

Another source, meanwhile, said that though Cheney may make valid points, he’s doing the Republican Party a huge disfavor: "Even if he’s right, he’s absolutely the wrong messenger … We want Bush to be a very distant memory in the next election. The more Cheney is on the front burner, the more difficult it’s going to be."

Very well thought out, insightful post — you are spot on……..as any leader knows, one must continually re-evaluate and adjust as new information becomes available OR in response to persuasive arguments are made.

Well MK P…back tracking it is. No matter how pretty a frame you want to put around it…it would have been nice if Obama had known something about the facts during his campaign rather than bash and put down Bush. Obama only wanted to win, he only needed to put down Bush to win votes.

He is an inexperienced and elistist community organizer who is in over his head. He watches the polls and moves accordingly. Now he is getting praise for being "flexable"? Pleaseeeee…..it was the only thing that he could have done.

All of his stances have changed in regard to the war and detainees. He was wrong…Bush was right. My oh my….

Actually, the American voter already knew all about GWB and what he had done to this country — McCain was trying to distance himself as far as he could from Bush.

Obama has only been in office not quite four months — he is a man who reasons through problems — it’s not like he hasn’t had plenty of problems left over from the Bush Adminstraion………..Obama is closing Gitmo, he is getting us out of of Iraq, European nations no longer see the US a loose cannon……….

Bush was so wrong on so many things……now only about 20% of American voters even want to be associated with Bush’s Republican Pary……….my oh my………….

MK P, now the American voter will learn firsthand from President Obama all about GWB and what he has done for this country.

Actually, Bush was right on so many things and President Obama just ordered a surge in Afghanistan.   More troops.   My oh my it certainly worked for Bush in Iraq.

Look closely at the new polls.

Actually, I believe the surge in Iraq was McCain’s idea………….

The surge in Iraq was the military’s idea, MKP….think Petraus.   John McCain was a senator!

If you will recall, McCain pressed for the surge………..

A "senator" can press all they want.   Petraus recommended that move to George Bush.   McCain supported the surge as opposed to Obama who did not support the surge.

I suspect Petraus recommended the move to Dick Chaney who then instructed GWB to follow the recommendation.

However those chains of events progressed, it was before many eyes and ears and the surge took place.   President Obama had now listened to the Chairman of the Joint Chief, Admiral Mullen.     You are grasping at a straw for some odd reason.

Straws…….are you referring to the strawman president, GWB?

But, that said — if GWB had not lied to Congress and the American people and taken us into the Iraq War under false pretenses — the surge would have been unnecessary.

Oh, my, MK P, Obama’s number one foreign policy initiative is to "surge" in Afghanistan just as Bush surged in Iraq to bring democracy to countries that were under horrible oppression from radical elements.   One cannot praise Obama and condemn Bush and be deemed reasonable and balanced.

It’s no secret that after 9/11 instead of avenging the over 3,000 American deaths by going after Bin Laden in Afghanistan — instead GWB decided to go to invade Iraq and cost anther over 4,000 American lives, and America less safe overall.

Had we gone into Afghanistan and taken care of Bin Laden and his terrorist groups — rather than worrying about making the Iraquis safer — Americans would be safer now.

Barbara, That’s a very fair and honest reponse. If only more people thought the way that you do.
