McCain, Gingrich Take Veiled Swipe at Limbaugh, Say They Don't Want Obama to 'Fail' (Video)

Rush Limbaugh may want President Obama to fail on some fronts, but other high-profile GOPers are saying that idea is, well, ridiculous.

Former House Republican Leader Newt Gingrich said on NBC’s "Meet The Press" that "you’ve got to want the president to succeed."

"You’re irrational if you don’t want the president to succeed because if he doesn’t succeed, the country doesn’t succeed," said Gingrich. "I don’t think anyone should want the president of the United States to fail. I want some of his policies to be stopped, but I don’t want the president of the United States to fail. I want him to learn new policies."

Gringrich also blasted Obama not opposing tons of earmarks, too much partisanship too soon, and Obama aides [i.e. Rahm Emanuel] feeding the Limbaugh fire.

Sen. John McCain, R-AZ, also distanced himself from Limbaugh this week. In an interview with Politico, McCain said of Obama: "I don’t want him to fail in his mission of restoring our economy."

McCain has been working with the president on a number of issues such as defense and wasteful spending. Vice President Joe Biden even called him asking how to crack down on lawmakers’ pork project. "These are terrible, perilous times, so I will seek ways to work with the president of the United States," the former White House hopeful told Politico.

But on the issue of earmarks — which McCain has been on a personal crusade against for much of his Senate career — he’s still a thorn in the White House’s side. On Monday, McCain bashed Obama on the Senate floor, saying he’s "angry," and calling on the president to veto a $410 billion spending bill because it’s filled with so many earmarks. McCain has twice failed in trying to attach an amendment to the spending bill that would get rid of $7 billion in pet projects for lawmakers, which he calls "wasteful."

Even Peter Orszag, President Obama’s Office of Management and Budget director, said the bill is "uglier than we would like." But it’s still expected to be passed Tuesday and sent to the president for his signature.

"We both campaigned on change. That was the president’s promise," McCain told Politico. "Now they’re saying this is last year’s business."

Obama shouldn’t expect McCain to give up his earmark and pork fight anytime soon. McCain may not want Obama to fail, but that doesn’t mean he has to agree with him on everything.

THANK YOU McCain and Gingrich.  Absolutely right - it’s neither rational nor patriotic to want our duly elected President to fail.  Even though we won’t all agree on the details, we need to aim for national success.

I think wishing the President will fail is a slap in the face of the citizenry - easy for him to say, given his annual salary - a worldwide economic collapse is a little different here - Rush’s attitude should be labeled as treasonous and unpatriotic!  I think it’s perfectly appropriate and encouraging for legislators to question the ins and outs of the President’s proposals; apathy and complacency in a democracy is a scary thing but to wish the worst on a President such that the world suffers for it is heinous

Well Newt has to back track a little bit he is thinking of running for President himself….can’t be seen to agree with anyone wanting Obama to fail!!!  Not a genuine disagreement just playing politics for down the road!!

Oh it will happen in 2012. Obama is already making plans to smear her. Funny thing she’ll have more than enough weapons to counter attack him. He is ruining this country.

Palin will be in national politics for the next 30 years. I’m sure she’d do a better job than Obama in her first 2 months. She’s honest.

McCain and Gingrich both would like to be seen as the ‘leaders’ of the GOP so now they’re trying to show up Michael Steele after his wimpy apology to Limbaugh.

DeB,  I think Friedman scored with his commentary today.  As long as people want this administration to fail, they are failing us..

Even Rush said he did not want Obama to fail…only if his goal is to convert to socialism!!  To many have a reading and listening comprehension problem!

S.J.  To many have a reading and listening comprehension problem!

Talk about stuck in a rut…  the libs keep repeating the same foolishness about Rush.  For every lib, there is a Republican who corrects them.  You’d think they would catch on.  Too many people know the truth of what was said…  the second part of Limbaugh’s statement:  only if his goal is to convert to socialism!!

I am not a socialist - but the market has proved that it has failed itself and the citizenry has suffered- so what role should the government play?  I was against the bailout because that is socialism (actually fascism) - but it’s not socialism to repair roads and bridges, it’s not socialism to support small business, it’s not socialism to give health-care to people - these are things in the public interest that derive a general public benefit that the private sector has no rational incentive to provide - the argument should be, what is the public interest, what is the role of government in the market - this is the conversation that needs to happen - there is a constant struggle between the needs of a capitalist society and the rights vested in a democracy; it’s what makes it work and what makes it sometimes not work so well

It’s amazing to me that the Righties can’t see true socialism when it hits them in the face. I write of course of socialism for the rich in the form of all the tax breaks they got under Georgie.
