Several months ago, I received a letter from Michelle Obama to the active alumni of the University of Chicago Lab School — the most wonderful school in the country hands-down and the place where the Obama children and I were so fortunate to get our educations.  It is truly a special place that was so intregral in my own success in my life that followed.  The school is so "ahead of the fold" and so innovative in teaching techniques that it had to have been a gut-wrenching thing to pull the children out.

But I thought you all might like to share the letter Michelle has written to us:

As our family begins the journey from Chicago to Washington D.C., I am humbled to join Barack in serving our country and thankful for the many friends who have supported us along the way.  We are especially thankful for the tremendous support we have received from the Chicago Laboratory Schools’ community, a community we have considered to be a home for our daughters, Malia and Sasha.

For the past seven-and-a-half years, The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools have been the center of our family’s daily life.  Barack and I have watched first Malia and then Sasha enter into the rhythms of Lab life:  lobby sings, Halloween parades, and playing Bozo buckets at the Rites of May.  And while our daughters still recount these fun times, Barack and I apapreciate most Lab’s day-in, day-out, student-centered approach to thinking, questioning, and learning.  Like all Lab parents, we believe whole-heartedly that such an education is the best preparation for whatever our children’s future may bring.

As our family approaches our next big step, Barack and I are grateful to have the chance to thank all the teachers, adminnistrators, and friends who have supported Sasha and Malia during their years at Lab and especially during the presidential campaign.   We also are grateful to the many members of the Lab School community who have joined us in this journey.  We learned firsthand that Lab graduates live John Dewey’s founding values: self-determination, learning by doing, and educating young people to be participants in a democratic society.

Malia and Sasha are lucky to have benefited from an education based on such essential values.  As a member of the Laboratory Schools Board, I have been encouraged by Lab’s commitment to sustaining and enhancing a diverse community of students.  That commitment is a key objective of the Lab campaign which will be publicly launched in 2009.  Although Barack and I will not be able to attend the celebration in April, we are pleased to be able to contribute to it.

Joan….although you and the Obama’s tout the teaching of John Dewey, there are many that do not. Paricularly Deweys rejection of a theistic God. His belief that science was solely responsible for furthering the human good does not meet with many Americans values.

Many feel that his experimental education is no substiute for tradional eduction.

Another interesting point is the belief that truth is mutable according to the problem. Seems as if Obama has taken that one to heart. There is no "truth" per se.

I find those types of instruction to children harmful and an indoctronation of sorts.

Now…on Michelle’s fashion sense…not too spiffy, but she does look presentable as first lady.

Kelly, how do you feel about teaching the basics in school, um, like spelling? Or failing that, how about learning how to use the spell check at the bottom of the page. You aren’t too old to learn new tricks.

Macwoof…pleassssse….was that a point? really?

I did teach spelling as a matter of fact! If you depend on a spell check perfect post…then skip on by mine…I don’t have time for that. Nor do I care.

I depend on readers that have a good enough grasp reading, that they can get the drift….

Have you ever heard of ‘Pandora’s Box’? Open it up and all the little nasties come out? It is sad when there is such an irrational hatred of this President that anything connected with him, his wife, her fashion sense, his children, their school… brings out all the newts and toads. Pace the rage, there are a minimum of 4 years to go, this is not healthy.

Oh DeBurca…I can speak for myself…I do not have an "irrational hatred" of this President. I have very precise reasons that my support of his administration has failed.

I do not like how Michelle speaks about this Nation, nor do I like things that she has said about race. Her fashion sense has no bearing on anything. She is not a fashionista…big deal.

There children are beautiful and I wish them nothing but a beautiful life.

The school I have plenty of problems with, that is my right to express. Especially since I feel that it indoctrinates the young minds.

That John Stewart quote is old and less than witty….

You can’t even be in a thread about his wife and his childrens old school without putting down both. It’s sad, and Jon Stewart’s words fit so well, I love using them! Pace your rage… or you’ll make yourself sick, and at the very least, when you criticize everything about this president, his family, his policies, every decision he makes… it becomes obvious that there is no rational thought taking place, just rage.

DeBurca…no rage about what Michelle Obama wears…however, what her husband is doing to this country, well rage does not even begin to describe.

His policies have lead to Nationalizing our banks and take over of private enterprise. Plenty of "rational" thought, some just don’t want to hear that rational thought. Too bad, but they will.

The childrens school is not based on principles that I admire. Education plays a large role in shaping ones view of politics and morals. Obama and his anti American policies were shaped early on in his life and education abroad. The legacy continues in some of our own schools.

So…discount my posts as you will, it matters not. There are plenty of people that will read them and look into what is said. They may learn something. Their eyes may be opened. Or, they may post back with new information for me…something more meaningful than quotes from a talk show comedian.

Hi Kelly … I know you looked up John Dewey and his founding of a school - but I have long found that one must not make blanket judgments (i.e. you and the Obama’s tout the teachings of John Dewey - WHAT? the man has been dead a hundred years and things change over time) made without actually seeing the hands-on education in place, putting it at the #1 ranked school in the country is going a bit far.  If you say this, you then must go wild that the Obama children are in a Quaker school now - again without knowing anything about the everyday teaching going on at that school - which having spent time there have never seen anything close to indocrination going on.

Each of us should thank God we are in a country where we are able to make our own choices.  And you should know well then the quotation from Matthew 7:1 which states:  judge not, and ye shall not be judged.  It is just something to think about.

Yes Joan…you are correct I believe that we are blessed to live in a country wherein we can make our own choices..so far.

However, I also have a right to my opinion…which is different from judging. But I thank you for the quote, out of context that is was….

Michelle’s quote in the letter you provided pretty much revealed her thought on Dewey’s influence on that school and curriculum. I suppose that she knew first hand of which she spoke.

I have my opinions and you have yours…
