You are reading way more negativity into my statements than is actually there.  I said I do not dislike her.  This means I have not developed strong feelings one way or the other…yet.  Perhaps I may come to like her very much after I have had a chance to get to know her better (so to speak).   I said I do like some of the outfits, but not others.  I said she looks great on the VOGUE cover (how is that even remotely negative?).  I said her children are adorable.  I was referring to the description of the swooning sorority sisters as being hysterical.

Your reaction perplexes me.

Of the 24 pictures in the slide show, only 8 represented Mrs. Obama’s ‘work’…the rest were demonstrations of her fashion style.  Do you really believe that is how this incredible woman would like to be represented?  As a fashion icon?

Michelle Obama deserves far more credit than she is receiving from the media…and frankly, I’d hoped for better from Wowowow!  I had counted on you to focus on her talents and contributions as First Lady, not how well she dresses.  Sigh…

Mary, that is the way things work here. Many of us had hopes for wowowow.

Well….then I guess that Michelle should not have hired a full time stylist to follow her everywhere ( like the stylist for Star magazine) …..the first of any President’s wives to do so.

Seems like this public image thing is very important to the Obama’s…..celebrity is high on the list.

Lots of you have mentioned Mrs. Obamas "uneven" style….That’s the beauty of Michelle Obama, she’s just like us, not always perfect but giving it a shot!

I love that she is comfortable in her own skin and she wears the clothes, not vice versa! I look forward to 8 years of fashion and inspiring public works from Mrs. Obama!

I’m so impressed with all that Michelle Obama has been doing since she arrived at the White House.  Her enthusiasm, energy and projects that she takes on are inspiring to us "older" folk, and, I hope, as well, to the young.  I’m interested in finding out how she follows up her visits to the elderly infirm, or to veterans and their families, or community projects.

Mrs. Obama’s involvement, interest and genuine caring for people is such a distinct contrast to her predecessor, so we sit up and take notice. That’s what I’d like to see the media focus on, rather than a new hair style or what she’s chosen to wear.

Susan Fried -

Please explain your last paragraph.  That is a nonsensical thing to say about Mrs. Bush or any of the former First ladies.  They have all "cared for people".  The Bush family, especially the ladies, have involved themselves in literacy in America for years.  It is not an easy thing to teach a teenager to read, especially if her parents cannot;  nor it is easy for an adult to learn to read after spending half of his/her life as illiterate.  Mrs. Obama may become a wonderful First Lady, and I hope she does.  But do not slight former First Ladies because of your adoration for this one.  Mrs. Johnson wanted everyone to pick up their own trash and plant a few seeds, Mrs. Reagan was very helpful with children who lived near or with other druggies but were able to stay away from the "pushers" and just say no.   All the First Ladies "have shown compassion, interest and genuine caring for people".

Mrs. Obama made a few mistakes when her husband was a candidate but that is now in the past.   When a person is put so high on a pedestal, the chances for future disappointment are also very high.

Michelle Obama is refreshing and real. I am so proud to have her as our "First Lady". However, I must comment on the above post regarding the line "such a distinct contrast to her predecessor". Laura Bush brought many good qualities to the White House and I don’t think that she deserves to be judged so harshly.

If I have to hear anything else about this woman I’m going to throw up!! She is very ordinary at best, and the media is making her out to be the best thing since sliced bread. She is no better than any of the others.

I think Laura Bush is lovely and, as you said, seems very ‘real’ to me.  I don’t dislike Michelle Obama.  I need more time to study her and make up my mind.  But sometimes people can overdo praise to such an extent that it actually turns you against the object of their affection.  I think that is a very real danger in this case.

If it bothers you that badly, don’t read it.  That’s why I stopped reading Sarah Palin articles.  Nobody can force you to look at the pictures or read the story or the posts, that’s a voluntary act.

She is a lot better than sliced bread. In fact, she may turn out to be one of our treasured first ladies.
