It seems every time I come to Wow, there is always some article about power!
You liberal women are more concern with power than being a great woman, wife, mother, friend, lover!
Its all about power with your women!
On WOW we naturally are interested in women getting ahead in life in the business and political world - as we hope that seeing success of this sort in our gender will motivate others, knowing that YES, this can be done. But you are making a judgment call that these women and others do not take time for home, family, and friends. As one who is in the world of politics, I find that often we don’t want headlines of our "real" life, our children, and more to be publicized. It does not mean that a meaningful personal life is not going on. On other threads, you will find emphasis on relationships, love, family, and the like. Liza has just taken ONE of our facets - women getting ahead - and showcased it in her own style.
Lori, women are wondrous, and indeed powerful but most of them do not know that, nor appreciate what they have achieved for our earth and its peoples since the first homo sapien cells arouse from the morula stages. Power is being what a woman desires, including options for being "a great woman, wife, mother, friend, lover … " We have a totally different culture slant on problem-solving (for the most part), and chemically we are a different homo sapien; hence, equity is critical to our existence.
Come now, Lori, it seems every time I come to Wow there is some article and more on hype, cosmetics, hiding real women, personal sexual fantasies of some writers, topics of no real import for powerful people, not in the least. Bollywood certainty is not about power, only from a side of the proverbial fence when it’s sadly interpreted as necessary for life before a crowd of unknowns.
MAINE, not Alaska. Why is that glaring error still up there? Ouch.
Liza … as you guessed I might be, I was a bit disappointed that you did not include among your women the very fast-rising ONLY senator from Minnesota, Amy Klobuchar. WOW just showcased her a month ago after her standing applause at the Washington Press Club that she keynoted, but she has been given roles on the better Senate committees, President Obama singles her out as a favorite in his invitations, and at the recent birthday tribute to Ted Kennedy - who has had almost mentor status with her - she was one of the senators in attendance. She is the one to watch as her road upward has been smooth, her mind brilliant, and her demeanor far more personable and appealing than "her sisters" in Congress.
Just remember Amy as you watch her star rise even higher — and when it is her turn to be drawn by our superb cartoonist, Amy is most often seen in RED :-) Joan
"…her demeanor far more personable and appealing than "her sisters" in Congress."
Some find stronger personalities (even in women) more appealing, and most find them more memorable.
Like you, I too can say that having political offices early on, writing, and being a good wife and mother (my husband would say "great"), is extremely doable. . and gives you the best of all possible worlds. When a woman is happy within herself, she shines in all aspects in life in my own observation. And yes, in spite of the views of the woman above, we can be very successful - in fact, very successful - by the force of our own personalities that are listened to and respected. "Powerful" and "memorable" instantly brings up the face of Rush Limbaugh to me. Frankly, I — and probably you - have found that they have gotten to the heights using instead the intelligent voice of reason that would be hard to refute as we do not speak if we do not have the facts to back it up. We don’t have to raise our voices and we still win out — or so has been the case with me - and hopefully, we are left with friends. . and those in Congress who learned the lesson on the way up - and still rise farther but do it with dignity, brains, and as such are role models for women. Love you as always, Liza - Joan.
