Michelle Obama Not Necessarily Magazine Gold

Michelle Obama is enormously popular and has been seen on innumerable magazine covers in recent months. While some would think those magazines would fly off the shelves, it appears the First Lady isn’t always a best seller.
While black interest magazines see an uptick on covers featuring Mrs. Obama, not all publications are so lucky, AdAge reports:
Mrs. Obama proved newsstand gold for Ebony last fall. The September 2008 issue, with a cover story on "The Real Michelle Obama," sold a hefty 261,000 copies on newsstands, 26% better than the six-month average, according to its report to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.
And the January issue of Essence, which split its print run between a cover featuring the president and a cover showing the first lady, earned newsstand sales of 458,000, the magazine told the Audit Bureau. The January 2008 cover, by comparison, sold 250,922 copies on newsstands.
Then there are a few covers with relatively weak sales. Newsweek’s December 1st cover story on "The Meaning of Michelle," using a black-and-white photo, only sold 90,000 copies on newsstands, 15% below its average for the second half of last year. More’s October issue featuring a cover story on "Michelle Obama at 44" sold just 154,000 copies on newsstands, 23% below the second-half average.
One general interest magazine that did do well, however, was Oprah’s O magazine, which featured both the first lady and the talk show host. That was the first time Oprah has shared the cover with someone else, and it paid off: sales so far are up 25%.
What about you, reader, are you more inclined to buy a magazine with Mrs. Obama on the cover?

I have a hard enough time getting through the magazines I subscribe to ! And the ones I read online … I finally had to stop the New Yorker because of the guilt feelings I had seeing them pile up ( I’ll try again when I retire )
…however, I have been known to browse the pictures when I am in line at the grocery store, just to see what she’s wearing.
All right, I admit it, I did buy People’s Sexiest Man Alive issue so I could take Hugh Jackman home for further viewing … at night … when I’m alone ;-)
With the internet I am surprised there are still so many magazines around. My answer would be No, dont buy them.
