Michelle Obama's Mom Loving Life in the White House After All

Barack and Michelle Obama may have had to do some arm-twisting to convince grandma to come live with them at the White House, but now that she has settled in a bit at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, it turns out she’s liking her new life just fine.

Not only does the first lady’s mom, Marian Robinson, help look after Obama daughters Sasha and Malia and takes them to and from school, but she attends fancy White House dinners and concerts, is a regular in the president’s box at the Kennedy Center, and wines and dines with the likes of Teresa Heinz Kerry — of the Heinz ketchup fortune and wife of Sen. John Kerry, D-MA. But, The New York Times says, the 71-year-old Mrs. Robinson has such a busy social life now, the Obamas actually have to hire a babysitter every once in a while when grandma’s out on the town. The best part is — she doesn’t have to clean the house herself anymore! Who wouldn’t love that?!

“She has a very full social life, so much so that sometimes we have to plan our schedule around her schedule,” Mrs. Obama said jokingly last week during a lunch with Congressional spouses, adding that having her mom around definitely helps Washington feel more like home. “I feel like I’ve never left Chicago … and we’re shuttling kids back and forth to play dates, just like usual, although now my mom does a little more of the shuttling than I do. I’m glad to have her here.”

Michelle and her mom grace this month’s cover of Essence magazine for their first public interview together, talking about being role models for the black community, family values, and Mrs. Obama’s new role as first lady. Michelle can’t stop giving her mother props, and Mrs. Robinson said she never had any doubt her daughter would go far.

"I never doubted that she could do this," said Mrs. Robinson. "She is doing it with such grace and dignity. So I am just proud. I just hope she does what she wants to do. [Chuckles] Because the things that she wants to do are very important. They mean a lot to her."

What a lovely lady!  I’m glad that everything is working out for her.

They have a strong mother daughter bond, and the President seems genuinely fond of her as well.  I’m not clear on why some people are opposed to her staying there with the family.  If the Obamas had a full time live in nanny, the out cry probably wouldn’t be as great.  Mrs. Robinson is not controversial, doesn’t seek the cameras, and two little girls will have great memories one day of their grandmother’s presence and influence in their lives.

I hope she stays strong and finds happiness even though she lives under a microscope.  The envy and vile remarks that I have read on the WOW site - I hope she doesn’t read them.

It’s amazing…I always hear leftists talking as though there was a flood of "vile remarks" about the Obama ladies, and yet I’ve seen very, very few of them (compared to the oodles and oodles of hate directed at Republican men, women, and kids; it’s practically a tradition in threads about the Palin family, for instance, for a group of the posters here to let loose vicious assaults against the Palin youngsters, particularly Bristol). It’s got to be something, to play the victim while committing the offense you’re complaining about!

One of my favorite things about the Obama administration has been having the women (both young and old) in the whitehouse. I actually like Michelle better since she has become first lady and I love seeing the girls there.

But to which vile and envious (not envy) remarks are you referring? I think for the most part people here have been gracious and supportive of the Obama women.

Scarlett,   Check back over the posts- unless you want to argue semantics.  Your definition I am sure means people can say anything and it will considered acceptable.    I am not sure what is meant by for the most part

I don’t remember reading "envy and vile remarks" on this site about Marian Robinson.

How fortunate for Michelle and her two daughters that they have her in their lives!   As a grandmother, I am the one who is envious.   I would love to be around my grandchildren and my daughter every single day of my life.

Wonder if she has a pair of those $540 sneaks????   j/k

I hope she realizes what a difference she making in the lives of her two granddaughters.

I don’t remember reading "envy and vile remarks" on this site about Marian Robinson    I did not say anyone made remarks about Marian Robinson.  You have made unkind remarks about Michelle in the past.  Evem in this last post you had to get in a little dig about the $540 snealers.

Why wouldn’t she love living in the WH….who wouldn’t? In this day and age, free room and board would appeal to anyone.

Free room, yes, free board, not really.

The Obamas pay for their own food, including Grandmas food

President Obama may have his own executive chef now, but when his family and personal guests eat what’s coming out of the kitchen, he’ll have to foot the bill himself. Luckily for him, though, the government picks up the tab if he’s having a state function at the White House, which could get pricey since the White House’s website touts that its five chefs can crank out dinner for 140 or hors d’oeuvres for over a thousand people.

I have a strong suspicion that a lot of those at least ("fancy White House dinners", etc.) would fall under the definition of "state function".

They are working for it by managing the country. It is part of their salary package. What do you mean free room and board!
