Mrs. Mark Sanford Is No Silda Spitzer, by Julia Reed

Julia Reed
My first thought, looking at the puffy, bloodshot eyes of South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, was, "Do these guys NEVER learn from the mistakes of their elders?" Although there are legions of examples of pols who strayed and got caught they could choose from – I’m not referring to Bill Clinton or Gary Hart or … pick a name – in this case, there is a particularly fitting example Sanford should have been mindful of: Wilbur Mills.

I have quoted the wise words of Mills, the late representative from Arkansas and the powerful chairman of the House Ways and Means committee, many times before: "Never drink champagne with a foreigner." Mills was referring to Fanne Fox, the stripper known as "The Argentine Firecracker" with whom he was discovered cavorting in the tidal basin. Apparently, Sanford drank in a lot more than that from Maria, the Argentine chauffeur, a woman he has considered a "friend" for eight years. Man, these guys never fail to disappoint – ridiculous cover stories (hiking alone on the Appalachian trail? Really?) are always blown, and we are left with hilarious images and bits of info: Monica’s blue dress; Spitzer’s black socks; and now, Sanford’s e-mail, leaked to The State newspaper, in which he praises the curves of his lover’s hips along with her "erotic beauty" and "magnificent gentle kisses," and describes himself as a man bound up in "a hopelessly impossible situation of love."

In addition to seriously pissing off his wife, who apparently found out what was going on a few months ago and asked for a separation two weeks ago, he has further narrowed the Republican field of 2012 presidential contenders. (Nevada Sen. John Ensign’s chances bit the dust after his longtime affair with an aide was revealed only a week ago.) Sanford has already resigned from his post as chairman of the Republican Governors’ Association, where he will be succeeded by my good friend Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who is already running and who is one of the smartest people I know.

But back to the Sanford saga: the most refreshing thing about his news conference yesterday was that Sanford was the only one crying. There was no dutiful wife, in dress and pearls, standing shell-shocked and red-eyed beside him á la Silda Spitzer. Jenny Sanford says she requested the separation in order to maintain her "dignity and self-respect." In response to their troubles, the couple had been attending an intense Bible study group, and Jenny, a tad too predictably, says she’ll take her husband back, but only "in time" and only "if he continues to work toward reconciliation with a true spirit of humility and repentance." It must be said, she is giving herself a lot of outs on that one. And I would not characterize quickie trips to Argentina as exactly in keeping with "the true spirit of repentance." From the looks of things (not to mention the video of his distraught, stream-of-consciousness press conference) no amount of praying is going to mend Sanford’s broken heart over this present-day Argentine Firecracker.

Rachel, Clinton shouldn’t have even been ASKED questions about an affair under oath, so the point is moot. He was impeached for cheating.

Also, Clinton did not run on a platform of self righteous ‘family values’ and ‘sanctity of marriage’ reasoning for keeping rights away from one group of Americans.

Wow, Deburca, because Clinton didn’t run on a platform of family values it was okay for him to have sex with a young page in the Oval Office as President of the United States?   And he shouldn’t have been asked questions about it?   And when he was asked, he lied?

Stretch…..stretch…..stretch…..what we are discussing here is that a governor got caught with his pants down.   It doesn’t matter if he is a democrat or a republican!   Your hatred of republicans has taken over your ability to make sense.   This isn’t complicated….this is very simple.   Sanford cheated on his wife.   Period.    It has absolutely nothing to do with being a democrat and getting a "pass" for it.

Are you trying to be thick? Do you really not understand the difference between a politician who cheats and an adulterous politician who runs on a ‘family values’ ticket for a party that tries to legislate the private lives of citizens? It’s called hypocrisy.

Deburca, Clinton and most democratic politicians incorporate a loving, positive, "together" family image into their campaign. Clinton was no exception. I think we both can agree that it’s hypocrisy to pretend that you’re a faithful, "together" family while hubby is cavorting with interns — just like it’s hypocrisy to campaign on family values while chasing women in other countries!

Clinton and his wife had an interview BEFORE he won the election about his past affair. And Clinton never ran on a ticket of ‘family values’… we are not talking about having a nice family here, we are talking about policy based upon certain religious beliefs and dictating through legislation the personal lives of Americans. Sanford and the party he is a part of calls itself the ‘family values’ party and it is using a religious phrase, the sanctity of marriage to attempt to keep rights away from a segment of American people. Talking about how gays cannot marry because it threatens the ‘sanctity of marriage’ and fighting attempts by the gay community and others to provide equal rights to all citizens, while you are having sex with a mistress is hypocritical.

Putting politics aside, they are both human beings naked before us as cheaters.   You want to keep bringing a platform of "family values" into this when this really doesn’t have anything to do with being a republican or a democrat.   It’s your usual spin in order for you to make a point.   It has nothing to do with hypocrisy.

Republican Values:

Preserving Our Values

From its founding, America has been an idea as much as a political or geographic entity. It has meant, for untold millions around the world, a set of ideals that speak to the highest aspirations of humanity. From its own beginning, the Republican Party has boldly asserted those ideals, as we now do again, to affirm the rights of the people under the rule of law.

Works for me.    And it should work for all Americans.

Are you kidding Rachel?? We ripped Edwards apart in here for not only cheating, but for risking a Democratic win in November by running with that in his closet. Also, Edwards is not an elected official, he was a candidate.

We certainly did. But how many times was the call to drop the topic asap issued? Edwards was not an elected official, but he was a candidate to the highest office in the land. Let’s not split hairs and try to pretend that there’s a significant difference between the intent and culpability of the two things; on the one hand, Edward’s aspired and worked to be elected to the highest office in this country, and on the other, Sandford is an elected governor. Edward was aiming higher than Sanford while committing his transgression, while Sanford was one of 50 similar officials while he committed his. What’s your point?

Great, Rachel!   Well stated!

Thanks, deber. The sad thing in terms of America’s image about these political scandals is how stupid they make us look (although, so far anyway, the Italians have us outranked on the hillarious political scandal front ;) ).

France accepts paramours….no problem….no scandals….no media.   Personally, I’m glad the United States is not like that.

Rachel….I couldn’t agree with you more….you are doing great…as always!!   :-)  Maybe edwards was discussed here, in fact more than on msm….they wouldn’t touch it…even FOX NEWS!!!!!  msnbc rarely said anything but look at them last night…like I said…Morning Joe and his hosts were very upset with the commentators on the later shows showing a double standard….I don’t listen to them in the evenings, but I’m assuming it was mr. tingles and obey!!!!

Rachel and Libra, you can’t make this stuff up.   And, now, we have to listen to the democrats rage on and on about the republicans platform on  family values.   I was just called "thick" because I couldn’t see it "their way."   The ice is thin now and I fully understand their frustration and inability to look "east."   Seems the only people who are really concerned about what is fair to all Americans are the republicans.

Gov. Sandford made a mistake.   A grave bad move and he is the one who will ultimately pay the price for it.   Not the democrats and not the republicans.

Deber….omg…last night after listening to what I could bare to watch sanford’s "I’m so sorry" speech, I said to a friend….this will be the very first topic on Wow tomorrow….and look…they have two topics to post on about it….imagine that!!!!  Morning Joe said it right and Mike Barnacle, who is so in bed with obama, even spoke up and said to sit and judge something that is so private for any family to go through is really sad.  It’s the family I really feel for….I can’t imagine what sanford’s wife and sons are facing today with this being all plastered everywhere….those are the ones who are hurt the most….I think edwards got a pass because of his wife’s illness and they didn’t want to put her through such a horrible  experience….until she came forward with her book, it remained pretty quiet except for the rag mags with his baby’s picture on it.  If these guys would think with their brains instead of their penis, they might prove to be great politicians….but they have no one to blame but themselves….I just can’t imagine any sex being so good that you would risk your career over it!!!!  Maybe that’s why more men are standing crying at the podium then there are women in politics….they are too busy with their career and raising a family…..and caring for other family members….Think how many  women in politics have the time to take the day off from their busy schedule to play golf…but you can bet you can find many of the male politicians out there every chance they get…..thanks to the good woman at home caring for the children and preparing dinner for their man when he comes home from an exhausting day at the office or golf course!  Sometimes it isn’t worth being married to the bread-winner….I bet there are many wives who have been cheated on will say those exact words!!
