Mrs. Mark Sanford Is No Silda Spitzer, by Julia Reed

Julia Reed
My first thought, looking at the puffy, bloodshot eyes of South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, was, "Do these guys NEVER learn from the mistakes of their elders?" Although there are legions of examples of pols who strayed and got caught they could choose from – I’m not referring to Bill Clinton or Gary Hart or … pick a name – in this case, there is a particularly fitting example Sanford should have been mindful of: Wilbur Mills.

I have quoted the wise words of Mills, the late representative from Arkansas and the powerful chairman of the House Ways and Means committee, many times before: "Never drink champagne with a foreigner." Mills was referring to Fanne Fox, the stripper known as "The Argentine Firecracker" with whom he was discovered cavorting in the tidal basin. Apparently, Sanford drank in a lot more than that from Maria, the Argentine chauffeur, a woman he has considered a "friend" for eight years. Man, these guys never fail to disappoint – ridiculous cover stories (hiking alone on the Appalachian trail? Really?) are always blown, and we are left with hilarious images and bits of info: Monica’s blue dress; Spitzer’s black socks; and now, Sanford’s e-mail, leaked to The State newspaper, in which he praises the curves of his lover’s hips along with her "erotic beauty" and "magnificent gentle kisses," and describes himself as a man bound up in "a hopelessly impossible situation of love."

In addition to seriously pissing off his wife, who apparently found out what was going on a few months ago and asked for a separation two weeks ago, he has further narrowed the Republican field of 2012 presidential contenders. (Nevada Sen. John Ensign’s chances bit the dust after his longtime affair with an aide was revealed only a week ago.) Sanford has already resigned from his post as chairman of the Republican Governors’ Association, where he will be succeeded by my good friend Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who is already running and who is one of the smartest people I know.

But back to the Sanford saga: the most refreshing thing about his news conference yesterday was that Sanford was the only one crying. There was no dutiful wife, in dress and pearls, standing shell-shocked and red-eyed beside him á la Silda Spitzer. Jenny Sanford says she requested the separation in order to maintain her "dignity and self-respect." In response to their troubles, the couple had been attending an intense Bible study group, and Jenny, a tad too predictably, says she’ll take her husband back, but only "in time" and only "if he continues to work toward reconciliation with a true spirit of humility and repentance." It must be said, she is giving herself a lot of outs on that one. And I would not characterize quickie trips to Argentina as exactly in keeping with "the true spirit of repentance." From the looks of things (not to mention the video of his distraught, stream-of-consciousness press conference) no amount of praying is going to mend Sanford’s broken heart over this present-day Argentine Firecracker.

We are talking about these guys who cheat are we not?   I have said it happens on both sides if you read my comment earlier but what I don’t hold with is the fact that the Republican party run their campaigns on being the "moral and family values" group and they act so self righteous!!!  They seem to hold themselves to a higher standard than the Dems in their eyes so when this stuff happens they look just like the liars and hypocrites they are….it’s very simple.

People on this website are calling you out on this. That’s all. Check out your own back yard and do some research about those who cheated that are Democrats. It’s a pretty long list my brother!

caj p, I’m with you on this. They either refuse to get it or there is no way to simplify the concept enough for them to get it. I IS frustrating.

I know, it’s like to talking to a brick wall with these folks.    They can’t seem to grasp the fact they run on this holier than thou platform and how this episode with Sandford smacks of pure hypocrisy.  It really is baffling!!!

Your post on this thread were contradictions and people called you on it. If you are airing dirty laundry well guess what it will come back to you. Well Democrats aren’t exactly angels and it’s been explained over and over by many to you. That is why I gave you examples and that is why I stated look at your own back yard. The hyprocrisy seems to be coming from you. Deal with it.

There were no contradictions on my part.   I said Dems had problems as well if you read the comments properly!!!  My point in all this was and still is the fact that Reps run on "moral and family" values as their platform with them thinking they have the higher moral standards!!  That is very simple to understand surely!!  You deal with that!!!!

Well put Karleen….I agree with what you said! Amazing how many on the far right, not just politicians, but clergy etc, have real trouble keeping the zipper up after haranguing the public about " sinning" against God and Country, then skulk away to a rehab of sorts to begin again!

I don’t know how his wife could even think of getting back with him now especially with those tapes out there for all to hear he has publicly embarrassed her.  Are these men so stupid to even think that these kind of tapes wouldn’t surface and why would you even make tapes that you know will be found eventually anyway?   I think it’s time for the Republicans to stop using that "moral and family" issue as their platform is sure isn’t working for them and only portrays them as pure hypocrites.

"I think it’s time for the Republicans to stop using that "moral and family" issue as their platform is sure isn’t working for them and only portrays them as pure hypocrites."   How many times are you going to say this?

C Hardy-

Because he doesn’t want to look in his own back yard. I looked in my back yard last year and I thought time to clean house so I voted Republican. I know others who voted Independent. Just a thought and an opinion.

So sad and so predictable.  When will one have the decency to step down from their exalted position before they get caught.  I guess not in this lifetime.  Oh for the good old days when one had respect for our leaders.  Today, they set a bad example ( President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are trying to set a good example and are doing a fine job)  one could get very discouraged and cynical about the whole thing.

What the hey was Sanford thinking with that email?  An email is a postcard, there for anyone and everyone to read.  Sanford may as well have returned wearing a T-shirt saying" I got good lovin’ in Argentina".

Maybe one good thing will come from these recent free falls in the GOP.  Perhaps we will not be subjected to their moral and social issues.  Not only did it turn people off in the last election, but they are hardly poster boys for marital harmony, values, and faithfulness.  That goes for both parties, but it might help if the GOP would lighten up on gays and take their blinders off when it comes to thinking abstinence is the cure all for teen pregnancy.  Right now, The DREAM Act is pending in Congress.  This has been shot down before, and it may be a good time for the GOP to actually show they have some interest in what is happening with illegals.  They could benefit from that boost.
