At NAACP Centennial, President Tells All 'Barack Obamas' Out There: 'No Excuses!' (Video)

Although President Obama told the NAACP yesterday that racial barriers do still exist in the United States, he also said, "Overall, there’s probably never been less discrimination in America than there is today."
While Obama was praising the civil rights movement for his own opportunity and rise to the White House, CNN was tracing Michelle Obama’s slave roots.
But last night, while speaking to 5,000 NAACP members for their 100th convention, Obama also has a strong message for black parents, saying they must accept their own responsibilities by "putting away the Xbox and putting our kids to bed at a reasonable hour," and crediting his own mother for making him what he is today. Turning to the kids, and "all the other Barack Obamas out there," he said money should have nothing to do with a child’s grades, and that every child is responsible for his or her own future. He also asked young people to have ambitions beyond becoming athletes and rap stars.
"Your destiny is in your hands, and don’t you forget that. That’s what we have to teach all of our children! No excuses! No excuses!"
You can read Obama’s remarks in their entirety here.
Meanwhile, CNN tracked down the rice plantation where First Lady Michelle Obama believes her great-great grandfather was held as a slave. Friendfield Plantation, outside of Georgetown, SC, is a symbol of something other than servitude. It’s a symbol of a stop one American family made in their historic rise from slavery to the White House. Watch the video below:

In a short while, someone will find fault with that speech simply because he delivered it. Actually, that speech should be heard by every parent. For a few years, I was a teacher. I called in parents of a teenage boy who was frequently absent. The parents knew that. When they left for work, he was dressed for school but then would stay home after they left to watch Jerry Springer. I asked, " Can we make a plan together to take control of this situation?" They just stared and shrugged.
The President is right on when he says, "No excuses. No excuses!"
Obama was correct in addressing black parents to take responsibility for their children. We all need to take responsibility for bringing up our children to be the best citizens they can be. Children need strong role models. And, children need to read instead of playing games and text messaging all day long.
Not only that, but Cosby is one that has experienced being black in America…not Obama. Obama has not had the black American experience ala Cosby.
Cosby knows this country from within, not from the outside as Obama did.
Well Dee, I was referring more to the public acceptance of Obama over Cosby. It was not a slam, it is an observation. One that has merit in this context.
I hope someone sends a copy of this to Levi when they can find him …..
S G, it was a good speech, I’ll give Obama that. Anytime anyone puts the words out there that our children deserve the absolute best we can provide for them bringing them up to feel good about who they are and the many possibilities ahead for them. I loved raising my children…we have so many wonderful memories from the bicycle spills to their broken hearts and now as they are buying homes and having their children.
Yes, it was, indeed, a good speech especially if wakes up those parents who need to change the way they are raising their children.
