Nancy Pelosi Makes Bid to Save Newspapers

Newspapers are in dire straits these days. Just yesterday, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer announced that they’re publishing only online. And earlier this month, the Rocky Mountain News shut its doors.
It’s pretty distressing, especially to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who’s asking the Justice Department to help save her local paper, The San Francisco Chronicle.
In a letter sent to the department yesterday, Pelosi asked Eric Holder to adjust antitrust laws to help the industry consolidate: "We must ensure that our policies enable our news organizations to survive and to engage in the news gathering and analysis that the American people expect." She continued:
I am confident that the Antitrust Division, in assessing any concerns that any proposed mergers or other arrangements in the San Francisco area might reduce competition, will take into appropriate account, as relevant, not only the number of daily and weekly newspapers in the Bay Area, but also the other sources of news and advertising outlets available in the electronic and digital age, so that the conclusions reached reflect current market realities.
The Justice Department said they’ll consider the matter in good time. Unfortunately for papers, time’s running out.

Ok…why do we have to bail all these people out? I guess people stopped reading them for a reason…if the paper isnt selling, then take that as a hint…
If you can get the info online and most people sit in front of a computer during the day, why buy a printed paper, for your puppy to whiz on or to use when your packing to move?
That money can be used to help pay for a child’s healthcare or medical bills or build a home for a family who has lost their jobs and their homes…stop bailing the wrong people out.
I agree C. Hardy! I only subscribe to my own local paper for LOCAL news and even that is online. It is more a donation than anything!
The news is OLD NEWS by the time it is printed anyway!
My business is even considering removing our yellow page ad as well or just posting our website instead. 90% of my new customers call from searching our website and that $200 per month cost is ridiculous!
Few even use the phone book either! cell phone 411 or the net is the ONLY way to go anymore!
OK, S.J.- you’re right on the money today! Both papers I subscribe to are practically giving them to us - if we pay for 6 months or a year at a time, it works out to less than $3 a week for both. I don’t know how they can keep printing!
I can never find any accurate listings in the four(!!!) phone books we have - I called 411 last night to request a listing, the operator verified my request and then hung up without giving me the number. I hope I don’t see any fees for information on my bill next month!
