Napolitano, Homeland Security Warn of Homegrown 'Right-Wing Extremists'

Janet Napolitano and her staff at the Homeland Security Department are warning local law-enforcement agencies that they should be on the lookout for "right-wing extremist radicalization."

Though there are no specific threats, the department worries that the economic situation and the sea change ushered in with the first black president could bolster violent radicals here within the United States.

The eight-page report, "Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment," warned that all of these factors "could create a fertile recruiting environment for right-wing extremists," according to The Washington Times.

Reuters offers more information:

"To the extent that these factors persist, right-wing extremism is likely to grow in strength," DHS said.

The report warned that military veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with combat skills could be recruitment targets, especially those having trouble finding jobs or fitting back into civilian society.

The department "is concerned that right-wing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to boost their violent capabilities," the report said.

The right isn’t the only subject of State Department investigation: left-wing groups have also been reviewed. According to officials, "the threat posed by lone wolves and small terrorist cells is more pronounced than in past years." Hooray! Something else to worry about — sheesh!

…right-wing extremism is likely to grow in strength…

If right-wing extremism is growing it is in answer the the left-wing extremism.  I’ve never seen the country so divided…  and it has nothing to do about race.  That was a cheap shot on Napolitano’s part.  Nearly half the country did not vote for Obama.  Nearly half the country has not a say in the government, because they won.  No partisanship at all.  Now the Dems are realizing people are angry and want representation…  particularly for the enormous debt that is being handed to them.  We all pay taxes and we all need representation.  In the end, the Dems might find they have won nothing but a lot of domestic problems to match the foreign problems that are coming up soon.

Of course, Dems have very little sympathy for these sentiments because they can remember the early part of this very decade — up until just a little over two years ago — when Republicans controlled the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches of the government.

In their first year in power, the “fiscal responsibility” party blew through the Clinton surplus of $236 billion.  Eight years later, they had blown the deficit up to $482 billion. Corruption and government spending went through the roof. The economic collapse happened on their watch, and is largely a nasty by-product of Republicans’ obsession with defanging the very watch dog agencies that were supposed to save us from this exact calamity.

And it’s not like Republicans have a better answer now. The House GOP released their alternative budget plan. It called for:

- Tax cuts for the wealthy
- Freeze all government spending for five years
- A halt to all stimulus spending (so no new work on infrastructure like roads, bridges and railways and massive layoffs of teachers or police, fire and EMS workers, etc., across the nation)
-  Slashing federal spending on health care for the poor and elderly
- Borrowing $6 trillion over the next 10 years

National debt would increase under the GOP alternative to 75 percent of the economy, according to Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).

Marjorie, According to The Southern Poverty Law Center Hate groups have grown 54% since 2000 so this is not a recent happeneing as you seem to believe. The Country is no more divided, and I would say less divided looking at Obamas poll numbers then it was under Bush…..it’s just some sides do more spectacular events to get attention.

And they’re all made up of Dems.  Or are you going to try to convince me that the groups are all Republicans or Independents?  Get a grip.

No actually, it might be a good idea if you stopped putting people in a "camp" because of what political party you think they belong to.  What difference does it make if they are Dems or Repubs?

In leiu of convincing you, maybe you should do your own research and go to their site…they actually track the far left too…you know those anti capitalist protesters that go to the Summits and disrupt things.

The world is made up of lots of views…and people who can actually do their jobs without pushing a political platform :O

Most of the violence perpetrated on our leaders in this country have been right wing extremists going after left-leaning presidents and the biggest terrorist attack on this country before 9/11 was done by a right wing extremist. To the right wing, just BEING left is considered ‘extreme’ and this is a big part of the danger of extremism coming from the Right and it is being encouraged by the talking heads like Limbaugh and Beck.

and … ??? With all due respect, MC, aren’t you still triangling groups against one another, while you remain the "motivator?" Labels mean nothing, right now, and will never now after our national downward sprial into entropy. Please just "let do."
