Napolitano: Homeland Security Dept. Never Said War Veterans Are 'Extremists' (Video)

CNN

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has a clarification to make: her agency never said America’s war veterans are terrorists. Rather, extremist groups may try to prey upon them in their recruitment efforts.

Napolitano was referring to a report issued by the Department of Homeland Security last week warning local law-enforcement agencies that they should be on the lookout for "right-wing extremist radicalization." The report mentioned war veterans who may be having a hard time assimilating after war as possible targets of extremist groups.

Since then, some conservative corners and Republicans have blasted the Obama administration, saying the report essentially wages "war on veterans."

Michelle Malkin writes:

The piece of crap report issued on April 7 is a sweeping indictment of conservatives. And the intent is clear. As the two spokespeople I talked with on the phone today made clear: They both pinpointed the recent ‘economic downturn’ and the ‘general state of the economy’ for stoking ‘right-wing extremism.’

Napolitano said the administration never intended to call out vets, and insisted that politics played a role in the spin.

"What it was saying is ‘look, we have a threat of terrorism within our own shores and one of the groups being targeted to see if they’d be aligned with that are some our veterans,’" she told CNN on Sunday. She said she regretted "that in the politicization of everything that happens in Washington D.C., some took offense."

She continued: "The report is not saying that veterans are extremists, far from it. What it is saying is returning veterans are targets of right-wing extremist groups that are trying to recruit those to commit violent acts within the country."

deber- Why of course not!!!  There will never be any word on that other than it does not exist.  Afterall, this is an administration that is All about coming together, yeah, Right???  In their eyes there is Only Right wing extremism!

It seems to me that they define "right wing extremism" as anything that is not "left wing extremism."

Andrea- I loved your post and it is right on, how did we as Americans ever find ourselves in a place like this??  It is really difficult for me to understand that you are one or the other and that there is not any middle ground.  We are entering a very frightening time in American history.  Have a good day.

Thanks, Deborah. Yes, it’s scary. Patriotism has just about gone down the tubes. A shame. It used to be America was split by north and south during the Civil War. Now it feels like most people would like to divide our country in half again [and not for race reasons, in spite of what some might argue].

Gosh Andrea, you made such an unique point I just wanted to let you know that.  You hit it right on the head of the nail!  For myself, that is Exactly how I feel and truely, I hate it.  I keep re-reading your post and thinking "how have we allowed this to happen?"  I mean All Americans and like you said, as much as the Liberals would love to believe we are speaking of race, it obviously has Nothing to do with that.  It is all in the name of Politics.

Deborah, I’ve believed since 9/11 that we need a strong military presence overseas - I still believe it. [And it would appear Obama believes it now, too.]  How did the current state of dividedness occur? I’m not an expert by a long shot, but in spite of having voted for Bush both terms, I believe he got so tunnel-visioned that he simply focused on the war on terrorism and lost sight of what was happening on the homefront. Simple as that. Well, if you don’t clean the house in a while it collects dust, right? But that’s not the only explanation - we’ve got a President who took office and was forced to take on the financial crisis. No matter how you cut it, not everyone agrees with everything. But this slow awakening of public awareness has been mushrooming to the point where many of us would probably feel more peaceful if the country was split. But how ridiculous is that? I hate guns, I believe in stem cell technology, I believe the government has no place telling me whether I can have an abortion or not, I am pro-Israel, I strongly advocate sending all illegals back to their home countries, I loathe Hamas and the Taliban……..now tell me which half of the country I should live in. You can’t please everyone.

Andrea, When you asked at the end "now tell me which half of the country I should live in?"  i just thought OMG, what are we doing and I sure do not have an anwer for your Very Important question at the end of your post.  I really feel exactly like you do regarding Bush.  He did have tunnel vision.  The most important issue and maybe even the only issue became "Keeping Americans Safe"  Then, as the time continued on he did lose sight and did not do the continuing house cleaning that must be done.  But you know Andrea, we can admit there were many mistakes made and that is one of the issues I have with Democrats-heck until the bitter end they all kept saying that Clinton would never have sex (or whatever) with that woman or any of the women that had accused him.  I believe that the American people and even the right leaning news network, which is ONLY Fox do not have a problem with the admission of the mistakes Bush made.  What was really frustrating for me is that he Never got credit for anything and is still getting blamed for Everything.  For me personally, I begin to notice a large division during the Clinton administration and it has been a fast downhill trip all the way to the bottom and we have hit it!  I agree with you on all your points and they are great ones and I really appreciate you sharing this with me.  But like you Andrea-It Is Ridiculous for the United States of American to be split in half, it just can’t happen and gosh are we in trouble if it does and we are definitely headed in that direction going 100 miles per hour.  It is such a scary thought!  Thanks so much!

I think over time Bush will be given long overdue credit for keeping us safe. Everyone seems to have lost sight of that. As long as there are no more 9/11’s in the US most Americans will more than likely forget how tenuous the matter of safety is. I think a large part of the problem is that it’s human nature to blame someone for catastrophes. If we could all just get beyond this business of blaming and move forward, whether we voted for Obama or not, things will be more cohesive.

Andrea- I just wanted to tell you how much I agree with you on every single word that you said.  I just hope we can move on because what is going on right now is a nightmare.  It is time- it is now or possibly Never and that is a real frightening thought!  Hope you have a great weekend!

Caught again… SHE MOST CERTAINLY DID SAY THAT. No matter how wowowow wants to title the article. Why didn’t the President apologize to the veterans?

She most certainly did call both the "right wing" and "veterans" extremist. Oh yes she did. Now she backs away from that and it still isn’t any better. Now she allows that veterans may not have the mental abliltiy to make sound judgements. Why would that be?

THE FUNNY THING IS THIS: if war is such a "Republican" and "right wing" monster…and Iraq is so bad, wouldn’t returning vet be DEMOCRATS!

Sure they would….if what the left leaning media is reporting about Iraq was true. But it isn’t and her statement proves that fact more than anything else that has ever been said on the subject. Many vets re enlist because of the good that they have seen with their own eyes. Many tell stories of the people of Iraq begging them not to leave. BEGGING them to stay.

These are the stories that the press will not report on. Napolitano’s report only supports the fact that most veterans understand what really is going on over there.

Deber…there was a report about possible “left wing” terrorism. Left wing extremists are just a nerdy bunch of computer hacker ner do wells, living on HotPockets in their mom’s suburban bungalo’s basement. “Supposed” left wing extremism will come in the form of computers virus, and PayPal hacking. Those loveable lib kids and their hobbies…

And ….to top it all off….regardless of the left’s rants about "right wing" extremist and calls for more gun control legislation…VIOLENT CRIME is down during this recession in relative to others by 19%.

So much for the dangerous and armed "right wing extremist"….you know…the LEGAL registered gun owers…..
