Obama ASU Speech Pokes Fun at Scandal, Urges Service (Video)

Arizona State University may not have granted commencement speaker Barack Obama the customary honorary degree, but the president didn’t let that controversy dampen his spirits. On the contrary, Mr. Obama used the controversy — which stemmed from officials saying "his body of work is yet to come" — to crack a few jokes.
Said the president, "I come here not to dispute the suggestion that I haven’t achieved enough in my life. First of all, Michelle concurs with that assessment. She has a long list of things I have not yet done waiting for me when I get home." Joking aside, Obama went on to explain that one’s work is never truly done, The New York Times reports:
I come to embrace the notion that I haven’t done enough in my life. I heartily concur. I come to confirm that one’s title, even a title like president of the United States, says very little about how well one’s life has been led — and that no matter how much you’ve done, or how successful you’ve been, there’s always more to do, always more to learn and always more to achieve.
Students should look at the future as an opportunity to serve their communities and the nation as a whole, urged the president, insisting that a "body of work" is about "the daily labor, the many individual acts, the choices large and small that add up over time, over a lifetime to a lasting legacy." He also said that the States need to undergo a "fundamental change of perspective and attitude" to ensure we survive — and thrive from — the financial crisis.
Here’s part one of the president’s speech:

His eloquence and compassion are always evident in every speech. I knew the night would be another success for him and create a wonderful memory for the graduates .
And what? No firetrucks rushing to the scene to rescue the overheated grads, as one poster predicted yesterday?
Sorry, DeBurca, but his arrogance seeped out last night….Obama couldn’t believe he wasn’t getting an honorary degree…and it showed.
It would’ve been far better, in my opinion, if he had never brought it up. Bringing it up meant to me that his ego was having trouble accepting it.
Okay now, on to Notre Dame. Let’s see what he will have to apologize for there….
deber —-Someone asked the question, on another thread, "Why are so many of us anti-Obama". Some posters gave their opinions - of course their answers were criticised and rejected. During the campaign I watched a man who I could only label as Narcissistic. And, ego driven. There was an article on "World Net Daily" today, IMO it describes the President.
Last night at ASU his arrogance definitely seeped out and the narcissism was obvious.
"He lamented politicians "worrying about the next election rather than the national interest." But in choosing Arizona State University, Mr. Obama was speaking at a university of 67,000 in a southwestern state that is likely to be at play in 2012, when Arizona’s senator, John McCain, will not be on the ballot. On Thursday, Mr. Obama will hold a town hall meeting on credit card issues in New Mexico, another battleground state.
His travels since taking office have carried him on a tour of previously Republican states he took in November, Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, Colorado, Florida, and North Carolina, and one, Missouri, he barely lost."
Excuse me, President Obama, did you not say "politicians are worrying about the next election rather than the national interest?" No one knows that better than you!
Are you thinking that other Presidents, like say GWB — wrote their own speeches?
And, speech delivery is everything.
C — don’t you think everyone else also knows that presidents have speech writers? It makes you sound like you don’t know when you make comments like that……so I don’t get the purpose of making the comment about Obama if you know that all presidents use speech writers.
There’s a difference between reading a speech and delivering it.
What is the issue with a teleprompter? Is it okay to read a speech from a paper on a podium while delivering it, but not okay to use a teleprompter? Where is the logic in that?
Mk this is the comment I was talking about and its from you…
"Obama does a great job of staying above the fray which the right wing tries to generate. Once again, he proved he is a class act."…that comment right there makes it sound like what I was talking about. Just b/c I asked the question I did in no way makes me sound like I dont or do know that all Presidents have speech writers. But to make it sound like Obama did it all himself, that was my question and comment.
I dont care if he uses a piece of toilet paper or a teleprompter, I am not the one on here that gives Obama a hard time about it. I dont care what he uses to read a speech written for him. I have never once made a comment in a negative way about the use of teleprompter so ask the others that have.
