Obama Declares April Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April showers bring May flowers, but now, thanks to President Obama, the month also brings much-needed attention to the issue of sexual assault.

The president on Wednesday declared April Sexual Assault Awareness Month to help victims, bring attention to the crimes and prevent future crimes. Calling sexual assault "pervasive" in the United States — 18 percent of women reported being raped at some point in their lifetime — Obama stressed that such attacks not only take their toll on the victims, but the family, friends and others, as well.

Long-term health problems like STDs, emotional stress and chronic pain may also stem from sexual assaults.

Services such as crisis interventions, 24-hour hotlines, advocacy, legal aid and counseling are still very much needed. Citing laws like the Violence Against Women Act of 2005, which allocated the first federal funds dedicated exclusively to sexual-assault services, Obama also said it’s equally vital to ensure forensic examiners have the tools they need to track down the perps.

"To make continued progress, my Administration supports efforts to help Americans better understand this issue," the president said in his declaration. "Working together, we can reduce the incidence of sexual assault and help all who have experienced this heinous crime."

This month has also brought an increased focus on sexual assault at the Defense Department, which has seen increasing reports of rape and sexual assault of women in the military. The DoD this month launched a new website and campaign to better train on ways to prevent the crime and to encourage military personnel to "take care of their buddies."

Great move Mr. President.  I saw the story of the subway rape victim on the today show .   More awareness of every issue of an assault needs to be explored.

This sure beats Governor Perry’s April Awareness Month (in Texas), doesn’t it? YIPPEE.

All the way to the top, someone cares about violence against the born, especially women! It’s high time someone did something. I’m getting too old to keep up this fight.

I wonder - sexual assault takes all groups, all forms, and does exist in marriages. I wonder - how many women go into whole body shaking when/if they see their assaulter year later?

One day, in the 80s, I did - in a large grocery store. Heels, suit, Brooks Brothers blouse and little tie, I literally forced myself to slink quietly away, and dashed through the damned stock room, and actually jumped out the loading door, only to find out it was "miles" above the street level. How I survived is beyond me.

As a professional, I realized with the deep inner trembling that my experience was not over - and had to seek out ‘support’ from that which I helped to "found." Our local crisis center.

It never leaves us. It should never leave them. They should be tattooed someplace, permanently.

In the end … between ‘that man’ and my father, it cost me over $191,000.00 to recover, not counting insurance. This is something that must be stopped, by male, and female attackers.

(no, I did not marry into the father’s abuse … the former occurred due to hidden alcohol in a later marriage - watch it… I also ended up paying all of his late taxes the first [and last] year of our union).

There out to be a law. And, I wonder - how many say, "There but for the grace of God, go I" — (or, as Churchill put about a pompous ass, "There but for the grace of God, goes God").

I’m so pleased that Pres. Obama decided to make April, Sexual Assault Awareness month.   This is such a terrible crime.  We can’t bring enough awareness to it.

I am so pleased we have a President that speaks out on this issue! Long over due to bring awareness on a national level.

Interesting that a certain Gov. in Alaska picked this man this week to be their Attorney General. This is what he had to say about Sexual assualt and abuse.

Leah Burton is on with CC, sharing her testimony regarding Wayne Anthony Ross.  She is a former citizen lobbyist who worked on behalf of families and children concerning child support, child custody, domestic violence, child abuse and sexual assault.

She discusses a meeting of the group DADS, being run by Wayne Anthony Ross, and what she heard.

Numerous comments were made that were appalling, not the least of which were remarks by Mr. Ross which included the following; “If a guy can’t rape his wife…who’s he gonna rape?” and “There wouldn’t be an issue with domestic violence if women would learn to keep their mouths shut.”

I hope Alaskans soundly reject this man! He has not been confirmed yet.

We are fortunate to have a clinic here that was started by a wonderful woman to treat victims of sexual assault.  They make sure that evidence samples are taken and sealed correctly and all injuries documented to be presented as evidence in court.  They treat the victim, and assist with follow up care and making sure the victim has access to all the required and/or needed services.  The nurse who heads it up also testifies in court as to the process used in the collection of the evidence, and the documentation and the assessment/description of the victim’s injuries.  She was a big part of helping my daughter, and in presenting the evidence that got her attacker convicted.  I actually got to the clinic before my daughter did; she was still at the hospital when I arrived.  When she arrived, and I saw her walking alongside the officer, holding herself rigidly erect with her poor face all bruised and swollen and the welts and bruises already coming up on the rest her, I wanted to cry and knew I didn’t dare.  I couldn’t hug her; she was too battered to endure an embrace.  And this woman came through the door and gently greeted her by name, and then smiled at her and said "Your mother told us how beautiful you are."  She managed to make my darling smile, just a tiny smile, and gave her just a little something to feel good about on the most awful morning of her life.  While that clinic is maintained and funded locally, it is good to know that support will continue to come, and keep those doors open.  The more light that is shed on this topic, hopefully will result in more help available for all the victims, everywhere.

Why does this bring to mind the pix of speechwriter Jon Favreau (not the actor) clowning around drunk and clawing at the crotch of a lifesize Hillary cut out—and the White House saying nothing? Where was awareness then?
