Nancy Reagan Praises Obama's Stem Cell Plan

President Barack Obama was joined by a pretty powerful Republican lady in his corner today when Nancy Reagan came out in favor of his repeal of a ban on federal funding for embryonic stem-cell research.

Politico says the former First Lady said she’s "grateful" to Obama for opening up funding, which could eventually lead to cures for debilitating and often deadly diseases, including Alzheimer’s, which afflicted late President Ronald Reagan. As he signed the order today, Obama said he is ending what he calls "a false choice between sound science and moral values."

"Countless people, suffering from many different diseases, stand to benefit from the answers stem-cell research can provide," Mrs. Reagan said. "We owe it to ourselves and to our children to do everything in our power to find cures for these diseases — and soon. As I’ve said before, time is short, and life is precious."

She also sat down with Sen. John McCain last year to talk about stem cells while he was on the presidential campaign trail. It was Reagan who helped change McCain’s mind on federal funding for the research. In 2006, she urged the Senate to pass a bill lifting restrictions on funding, despite a veto threat by then-President Bush.

Mrs. Reagan was quietly frustrated during George Bush’s last eight years in the White House when it came to the topic of stem cells. "A lot of time is being wasted,” she told a friend in 2002, who then told The New York Times of the conversation. ”A lot of people who could be helped are not being helped.”

Maybe now we can make up for time that’s been lost.

Nancy Reagan will have a powerful voice in this latest smart move by Obama,  by over turning this it will hopefully help so many people in the future and enhance the lives of so many with certain diseases to have a much longer enjoyable life.

I disapprove of this. There are other stems cells that can be used. Like the umbilical cord after the baby is born it is cut and at times thrown out. Why not use those stem cells.

I’m against abortion, but this is needed to help people. I truly believe embryonic stem cells can cure diseases, if thats what they’re looking for. I hope this is not a scam.

A Japanese biologist, Shinya Yamanaka, reprogrammed adult stem cells to an embryonic state in 2007—so the use of embryonic cells make become a thing of the past with this new technique.

I am GLAD to see that Mrs. Reagan got to see this signing. I think she will feel much better now knowing that the door to the future on this issue is now OPEN and that her Voice has been echoed by President Obama and his staff. A small wisper from Mrs. Reagan, a Neverending Echo for Mankind !!

I’m sure Obama couldn’t ask for a better policy endorsement, along about now.  Thank you, Mrs. Reagan!

Hopefully now the people that are here can be helped by the beginnings of people that aren’t here.  Thank goodness for the minds of science that can possibly pull this off.  Too many people need help and the way medicine is going, they might be otherwise ignored because it is too expensive.  This way there might be injections or even pills that  can help people continue to be contributing members of society for much longer than what is happening now.  Thank you, thank you, thank you Obama.

I hope and pray every day that the global science community will be able to find a cure for Spina Bifida thru stem cell research.

It was reported today that China, is way ahead in the area of stem cell research, and there is a Canadian boy with SB heading there for stem cell implantation.

If it is successful, then perhaps one day, my own son may benefit from stem cell research, and perhaps one day he too will be able to experience that which we all take for granted, just the pleasure of taking a walk.

One thing I keep hearing today is that embryos that aren’t used are discarded.  Someone suggested they be adopted.  Well what a interesting situation that would be.  The legal repercussions to this could be staggering.  Also, other countries are way ahead in research and we would end up paying them for the privilege of drugs that we could have developed ourselves.  And, you know other countries would do this.  What is the problem with some people of helping people already here.  I keep getting the impression that some people don’t believe existing, fully developed human beings should be extended the rights of an embryo.  That just doesn’t make sense to me.

I am so glad this has happened. I have too many friends who have died of diseases that could have been cured by stem cell research. People are totally ignorant of this. I actually heard a man call in a talk show today and said that killing these babies so people could get botox and plastic surgery was wrong. I could not believe what I heard, yet too many will have similar moronic ideas. The far right  should stay out of this, as it is what is needed to rid our population of these debilitating diseases whose research has been so limited because of the past 8 years’ restriction.
